This condition manifests as the newborn's skin becoming red, swollen, and ulcerated, resembling burns from boiling water or fire. This is caused by fetal heat and maternal obesity. If sores appear on the forehead and are difficult to treat, it is because the fetus was not properly supported within the womb. If there are ulcerated sores on the feet, the child will not survive beyond five years of age. If symptoms such as trismus (mouth closing tightly like a bag), clenched fists, and stiff neck unable to turn occur before the end of the twelfth lunar month, it indicates that pathogenic toxins have generated in the zang-fu organs; this condition is invariably fatal within three days. If the fingers of a male infant curl inward, or those of a female infant curl outward, there is still hope for treatment; however, if the presentation is contrary (fingers curling oppositely), medication should be discontinued. One should also observe whether green or blue veins appear in the center of the eyebrows; if present, life can be saved. If the eyebrows are red, the condition is deemed incurable. For treatable cases, formulas such as Quanxie San (Scorpion Powder) and Gouteng San (Uncaria Decoction) may be used.
Gouteng San (Uncaria Decoction) See Question 16.
Quanxie San (Scorpion Powder) Treats various types of epilepsy and fetal epilepsy.
Quanxie (Scorpion, one piece) Hupo (Amber) Zhusha (Cinnabar) (small amounts of each)
Grind the above ingredients into powder. Take one qian per dose, mixed with decoction of Maimendong (Ophiopogonis Radix).
Another prescription, also named Quanxie San, treats acute and chronic wind-stroke, effectively stopping spasms.
Quanxie (Scorpion, seven large pieces, wrapped in Boheye (Menthae Haplocalycis Folium) and roasted until yellow) Jiangcan (Bombyx Batryticatus, three pieces, stir-fried) Chensha (Vermilion) Shexiang (Moschus) (small amounts of each)
Grind the above ingredients into powder. Administer with decoction made from Shiliupi (Punica Granati Pericarpium). The *Zhizhi Fang* uses Chantui (Cicada Slough), Gancao (Licorice), and Nanting (Arisaematis Rhizoma).
Neck flaccidity (Xiang Ruan) refers to the collapse of the Tianzhu bone (cervical spine); it is extremely difficult to regulate and treat. The pathology does not lie in the Heart or Spleen. This often occurs after vomiting and diarrhea, or when suffering from Cold Damage (Shanghan) without sweating, due to failure to apply diaphoretic therapy. It is not originally caused by chronic illness leading to emaciation, but rather sudden weakness where the limbs cannot support themselves. If the neck is flaccid and the head feels heavy like stone, with a red face and crimson lips, it is due to Heat in the Liver and Gallbladder causing neck flaccidity. If the Liver is affected by Heat-Wind, quickly administer treatments to dispel Wind and clear Heat, then apply tendon-strengthening medicaments to the neck; recovery will be immediate. If this condition exists from birth, it is due to insufficiency of fetal Qi, or it follows convulsions, characterized by laxity and lack of tone, known as "Five Flaccidities" (Wu Ruan); indeed, suitable medicines are hard to find. For neck flaccidity caused by fetal wind or post-illness weakness, Qian Shi's Dihuang Wan (Rehmannia Pill) can be taken to tonify the Kidney. If the onset is sudden and violent, it is simply Heat in the Liver Meridian; one should take Xiegan Wan (Liver-Draining Pill). For external application to the neck, use powder of Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata) and Nanting (Arisaematis Rhizoma), mixed with fresh juice of Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens) and applied to the neck.
Xiegan Wan (Liver-Draining Pill) Treats Liver Heat generating Wind, upward staring of eyes, and spasms in acute convulsive disorders. It also clears Heat and disperses Wind; also known as Xieqing Wan (Blue-Draining Pill).
Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) Longdancao (Gentianae Radix) Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma) Zhiziren (Gardeniae Semen) Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, baked) Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix) Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix) (equal parts)
Grind the above ingredients into powder. Form pills the size of Euryale Seed (Qianshi) using honey. Dissolve and take with decoction of Zhusha (Cinnabar) and Zhuye (Bambusae Folium).
Dihuang Wan (Rehmannia Pill) See Question 8.
