Chao Yuanfang stated: Ascaris (Ascaris lumbricoides) is one of the nine parasites. It is one chi long, or sometimes five to six cun long. It may be triggered by deficiency and weakness of the Zang-Fu organs, or by consuming sweet and fatty foods. When it moves, there is abdominal pain, with swelling and mass formation that moves up and down. The pain has intervals of cessation. It may also attack the heart region causing pain. There is a tendency to salivate and vomit clear fluid. If the parasite penetrates the heart, death ensues. In pulse diagnosis for abdominal pain, the pulse should typically be deep, weak, and wiry. If the pulse is instead large, it indicates an infestation of ascaris. This disease arises from improper eating habits, such as eating too early or irregularly, a preference for sweets, and aversion to bitter tastes. During pain episodes, the child cries loudly. If the area above the philtrum, the nose tip, and the lips appear black simultaneously, this confirms the diagnosis. Treatment involves administering Shijunzi Wan (Quince Seed Pill), Binglang San (Betel Nut Powder), or Huachong Wan (Parasite-Destroying Pill) to expel the parasites, after which the condition resolves. Zhang Zhongjing stated: In cases of Reversal Cold due to Ascaris (Hui Jue), the patient will vomit ascaris. The current restlessness indicates coldness in the internal organs; Wumei Wan (Mume Pill) is the primary treatment. For those whose ascaris penetrates the heart, decocting Yiyi Gen (Coix Root) in water provides relief.
Shijunzi Wan (Quince Seed Pill): Treats the five types of infantile malnutrition (Wu Gan) in children, disharmony of the Spleen and Stomach, abdominal distension and fullness, intermittent abdominal pain, loss of appetite, and progressive emaciation. It is suitable for all these conditions.
Bai Shaoyao (Radix Paeoniae Alba), Nongpo (Cortex Magnoliae Officinalis, processed), Chenpi (Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae, white pith removed), Chuanxiong (Rhizoma Chuanxiong), Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae uralensis, each 2.5 qian), Shijunzirou (Seed of Quisqualis indica, soaked in water, black skin removed, 1 liang).
Grind the above into powder, mix with refined honey to form pills the size of a Chinese chestnut. Take one pill per dose, dissolved in aged rice water. It effectively treats pediatric abdominal pain.
Binglang San (Betel Nut Powder): A good prescription for treating Ren Gan Xuanlu Hou (a manifestation of Kidney-related infantile malnutrition with exposed teeth/gums); administer this formula after expelling parasites.
Muxiang (Radix Aucklandiae), Binglang (Areca Semen), Renshen (Radix Ginseng), Huanglian (Rhizoma Coptidis), Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae uralensis, honey-fried, equal parts).
Grind the above into powder. Take 1 qian per dose (0.5 qian for younger children), mixed with warm boiled water.
Huachong Wan (Parasite-Destroying Pill): Treats pediatric cardiac pain caused by parasitic biting, where pain comes and goes unpredictably, accompanied by loss of appetite.
Leshi (Herba Pedicularis), Binglang (Areca Semen), Hufen (Cerussa/Lead Carbonate), Lian Genpi (Cortex Meliae Toosendan, each 0.5 liang), Baifan (Alumen, 3.5 qian, half raw, half calcined).
Grind the above into powder, bind with wheat paste to form pills the size of mung beans. For a three-year-old child, take 30 pills. Swallow with warm sour rice water added with 3-5 drops of oil, taken before meals. All parasites are transformed into liquid, and larger ones are expelled naturally. It is highly effective when first administered.
Wumei Wan (Mume Pill): Treats Reversal Cold due to Ascaris (Hui Jue), characterized by vomiting of ascaris. The patient is initially quiet but becomes restless; this indicates internal cold. The ascaris moves upward into the diaphragm, causing restlessness, which ceases after a short while. Vomiting occurs upon eating. Further restlessness arises because the ascaris emerges upon smelling food odor, leading to spontaneous vomiting of ascaris. It also treats chronic dysentery.
Wumei (Fructus Mume, 75 pieces), Ganjiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens, 2.5 liang), Huanglian (Rhizoma Coptidis, 4 liang), Shujiao (Semen Zanthoxyli, treated to release moisture), Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis, each 1 liang), Xixin (Herba Asari), Renshen (Radix Ginseng), Fuzi (Radix Aconiti Lateralis Preparata, peeled and navel removed), Guizhi (Ramulus Cinnamomi, peeled), Huangbai (Cortex Phellodendri, each 1.5 liang).
Grind the above into powder. Soak Wumei flesh in wine overnight, remove pits, steam with cooked rice, and pound into a paste. Mix evenly with the medicinal powder to form pills the size of sesame seeds. Take 10 pills per dose, washed down with rice water after meals, three times daily. Avoid cold and raw foods.
