Li Tanqu's elderly gentleman's daughter-in-law began experiencing alternating chills and fever in the tenth month, occurring once daily, accompanied by cough (Ke Sou), heart pain (Xin Tong), and lower back pain (Yao Tong). By the seventeenth day of the first month of the following year, the episodes changed to every other day. Her muscles wasted significantly, her throat hurt, she sweated profusely like rain, leukorrhea flowed heavily like a stream, and her food intake decreased. Despite various attempts, the sweating did not stop, so he invited me to examine her. Her pulse was weak and soft on the right hand and scattered and chaotic on the left hand; this indicates that excessive sweating has prevented the pulse qi from consolidating. The disease has reached such a critical stage, which is extremely dangerous. Medical texts state that "heat-fire resembles malaria," which refers to this condition. The prescription consisted of Huangqi (Astragali Radix) 2 qian, Baishao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) 1.5 qian, Fencou (Gancao, Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) and Ejiao (Asini Corii Colla) each 1 qian, Biejia (Testudinis Carapax et Plastrum) 3 qian, Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus) 0.5 qian, and Wumei (Mume Fructus) one piece, decocted in water and taken orally. That night, the sweating stopped. The next morning upon examination, the left pulse had consolidated, and her spirit and vitality had returned. To the previous formula, Heshouwu (Polygoni Multiflori Radix), Shihu (Dendrobii Caulis), and Muli (Ostreae Concha) were added. On that day, the chills and fever did not recur, and her appetite slightly increased, presenting an image of revival akin to "spring returning to the deep valley."
Tai Xue Zhou Hengyu, a native of Lanxi in Wujiang and the grandson of Grand Minister Baichuan, recently expectorated blood that was purple in color. He had a constitutionally strong accumulation of phlegm-fire in the stomach, which obstructed the chest and diaphragm, causing distension and pain. Phlegm and blood stasis (Yu Xue) combined to generate heat. His pulse was surging and large at the left Cun position, slippery at the right Cun and Guan positions, and rapid (Shu Mai) throughout both hands, indicating an excess syndrome. He took Sizong Wan (General Manager Pill) 4 qian, along with Huashi (Talcum) and Taoren (Persicae Semen) each 3 qian, Shanzha (Crataegi Fructus) 2 qian, Zhike (Aurantii Fructus), Zhizi (Gardeniae Fructus), Beimu (Fritillariae Bulbus), Honghua (Carthami Flos), and Danpi (Moutan Cortex) each 1 qian, and Maogen (Imperatae Rhizoma) 5 qian, decocted in water and taken orally. The next day, he had three bowel movements, expelling a significant amount of accumulated phlegm mixed with blood stasis. The prescription was modified to include Zhizi (Gardeniae Fructus), Ziwan (Asturi Flos), and Danpi (Moutan Cortex) each 1 qian, Huashi (Talcum) 3 qian, Taoren (Persicae Semen) 1.5 qian, Xiaoji (Cephalopteri Herba) 3 qian, and Maogen (Imperatae Rhizoma) 5 qian, decocted in water with one cup of Tongbian (Child's Urine) added. After taking three doses, he was completely cured.
Da Can Zhang Gong, who served as the Sub-prefect of the Hangjiahu Circuit, was deeply distressed due to the death of his wife and eight other deaths within the yamen. Due to the close friendship with Ling Yi Weng, he politely requested my consultation. His left Cun pulse was short, the Guan pulse was wiry (Xian Mai); the right Guan pulse was slippery (Hua Mai), and both Chi pulses were wiry. Based on the pulse, it was determined that there was insufficiency of Heart Blood (Xin Xue), phlegm-dampness in the Middle Jiao (Zhong Jiao) flowing downward and coagulating in the meridians, resulting in soreness and pain in the waist and knees. Usually, he experienced distension in the upper back, frequent dizziness (Xuan Yun), and night sweats. Previous physicians had all administered wind-dispelling agents, which was inappropriate. I prescribed Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Baishao Yao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), Mugua (Chaenomelis Fructus), Niuxi (Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix), Wujia Pi (Acanthopanacis Cortex), Yiren (Coicis Semen), Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex), Jiuhuangqin (Scutellariae Radix processed with wine), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Shengdi (Rehmanniae Radix), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), and Weilingxian (Saposhnikoviae Radix) for regulation. After ten doses, all symptoms were completely resolved.
