Jin Jixian’s mother suffered from dysentery in the summer. She experienced urgency and discomfort in the lower abdomen, distension and fullness in the chest and diaphragm, and a parched, dry mouth and tongue. The pulse at the right Cun and Guan positions was surging and slippery, while the left pulse was wiry. This indicated dysentery caused by Qi stagnation and food accumulation. Initially, Muxiang Binglang Wan (Aucklandiae and Arecae Semen Pill) was administered to promote downward movement and unblock stagnation. After mild defecation one or two times, due to thirst, she ate a slice of watermelon, which immediately triggered nausea and vomiting. After a normal bowel movement yesterday, her chest and diaphragm felt relieved and open. She then consumed a bowl of rice, leading to abdominal fullness and oppression, dizziness, and a desire to vomit; what she vomited was phlegm and saliva. Therefore, Wendan Tang (Warm the Gallbladder Decoction) was modified for treatment. Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma) 4 qian, Zhishi (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus) 1.5 qian, Zhuru (Bambusae Caulis in Taeniam) 2 qian, Juhong (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Rubrum) and Fuling (Poria) each 1 qian, Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) 0.5 qian, Jiang Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma processed with ginger) 0.8 fen, Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens) 5 slices. Decocted in water and taken orally. After one dose, her chest and diaphragm became comfortable, she was able to lie down and sleep, the nausea disappeared instantly, and the dysentery ceased shortly thereafter.
Xu Zhongyu’s wife sweated profusely like rain, felt dizzy and confused, and could not find a comfortable position for her hands. Her chest required someone to step on it for slight relief, and if this pressure was released even slightly, her dizziness and confusion worsened significantly. She had rapid breathing and difficulty catching her breath; approaching wind induced nausea, vomiting, and syncope. One pill of Jiulong Zhenxin Dan (Nine Dragons Calming the Heart Pill) was given. After ingestion, symptoms stabilized slightly, but recurred after a short while. It was then realized that there was an obstruction causing pain in the chest and throat, making it difficult to swallow liquids or solids; only one mouthful of medicine could be swallowed, more could not go down. Suhe Xiang Wan (Styrax Pill) was then administered, and the syncope stopped quickly, revealing the onset of heart pain. Yesterday, all six pulses were hidden (Fu pulse); this morning, all six positions showed pulses, except the left Cun position which was short and choppy, indicating the pain was due to Blood stasis. Yanhusuo (Corydalis Rhizoma), Tao Ren (Persicae Semen), Mudanpi (Moutan Cortex), Danshen (Salviae Miltiorrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Qingpi (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus Pericarpium), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), and Xiangfu (Cyperi Rhizoma) were used. That night, she still had one episode of syncope due to extreme pain. Yanhusuo, Mudanpi, Tao Ren, Danshen, Xiangfu, Qingpi, Wumei (Mume Fructus), Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), Beimu (Fritillariae Thunbergii Bulbus), Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus), and Chishao (Paeoniae Radix Rubra) were prescribed again. After taking this, the pain reduced by more than half. She then reported feeling Heart deficiency with Heat, and dizziness. Zhiren (Gardeniae Fructus) was added. She usually suffered from nocturnal emissions/dreams involving sexual intercourse, which had recently worsened due to Heart deficiency. Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), Shihu (Dendrobii Caulis), Danshen (Salviae Miltiorrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Beimu (Fritillariae Thunbergii Bulbus), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Baishao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), Suanzaoren (Ziziphi Spinosae Semen), Jiu Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma processed with wine), and Xiangfu (Cyperi Rhizoma) were used for regulation, leading to complete recovery.
