Humans manifest with sores, ulcers, swelling, and toxicity. The Qi of the Six Yang channels is obstructed and stagnant, failing to find peace. Blood stasis and Qi stagnation disrupt harmony. These are all due to excessive surplus fire, while Yin water is insufficient to control it. Consequently, inflammation becomes blazing and soaring upward. This occurs solely because the Liver and Gallbladder fail to maintain pure clarity, allowing pathogenic turbidity to invade and cause disease.
This condition refers to sores, ulcers, swelling, and toxicity arising in the body, which then affect the eyes causing pain. The Fire of the Six Yang channels is dry and excessive, unable to be controlled by Yin water, leading to chaotic and unrestrained movement. Qi stagnation and blood obstruction initiate the emergence of sores, ulcers, swelling, and toxicity. The nature of Fire is to flare upward; the eye orifices are located high, serving as the pathway for Fire to vent. Turbid pathogens can harm clear orifices, which is a natural principle. The Liver and Gallbladder are viscera characterized by purity and harmonious clarity. In conditions such as sores, toxic abscesses, smallpox, and rashes, when turbid pathogens are vigorous, they invade and disturb this clarity and harmony. Due to prior depletion, there is deficiency in the Liver and Kidneys, with Yin deficiency and scanty blood. The clear juice of the Gallbladder is not sufficient. Because the source of transformation (Hua Yuan) is weak, the meridians of the eyes lack nourishment. Thus, pathogens take advantage of the deficiency to enter. Therefore, pathogens entering the eyes cause harm. If the eye disease occurs during the phase of viral/toxic attack, curing the toxin will also cure the eyes. If the toxin is cured but the eyes remain diseased, it indicates that the pathogen has entered the deepest, highest regions, making it difficult to retreat quickly. One must dredge the flow and clarify the source. If treated hastily and aggressively, one may provoke severe reactions, inevitably leading to changes involving stasis. It is appropriate to take:
Neishu Huanglian Tang (Coptis Decoction for Internal Purging) [Treatment: Various sores and toxins, where the skin is swollen and hard, accompanied by fever and vomiting, constipation, and a surging, full pulse; if the toxin attacks both eyes or one eye, causing redness, pain, and swelling, this formula is also applicable.]
Huanglian (Rhizoma Coptidis), Chao Zhiren (Fried Semen Ginkgo/Gardenia Fruit core - *Note: Zhiren usually refers to Gardenia, here likely Zhi Zi Ren*), Huangqin (Radix Scutellariae), Danggui Shen (Radix Angelicae Sinensis root body), Jiegeng (Radix Platycodonis), Guang Muxiang (Radix Aucklandiae), Binglang (Semen Arecae), Chi Shaoyao (Radix Paeoniae Rubra), Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae), Su Bohe (Herba Menthae Haplocalycis) (each 8 fen); Lianqiao (Fructus Forsythiae), Zhi Dahuang (Prepared Radix et Rhizoma Rhei) (each 2 qian).
The above ingredients are cut into decoction pieces. Add two zhong of plain water, boil until reduced to eight parts, remove the dregs, and administer after meals.
Huanyin Jiedu Tang (Decoction for Nourishing Yin and Resolving Toxicity) [Treatment: Residual toxins from syphilis not yet cleared, transferring harm to the Liver and Kidneys, causing steaming and burning sensations, narrow Shen Shui (aqueous humor), accompanied by red filaments, turbidity mixing black and white, and blurred vision.]
Chuanxiong (Rhizoma Ligustici Chuanxiong), Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis, washed with wine), Sheng Dihuang (Radix Rehmanniae Preparata/Fresh), Jinyinhua (Flos Lonicerae Japonicae, leaves removed), Lianqiao (Fructus Forsythiae), Huangqin (Radix Scutellariae, stir-fried with wine), Tufuling (Rhizoma Smilacis Glabrae), Xi Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae Uralensis, halved amount), Huanglian (Rhizoma Coptidis, stir-fried with wine), Kushen (Cortex Phellodendri), Maimendong (Radix Ophiopogonis, heart removed), Baishaoyao (Radix Paeoniae Alba, washed with wine), Xuanshen (Radix Scrophulariae) (each equal proportion).
The above ingredients are cut into decoction pieces. Add two zhong of plain water, boil until reduced to eight parts, remove the dregs, and administer warm.
