It is said: When the Yin pulse beats vigorously and differs from the Yang pulse, it is called pregnancy. If the pulses at the three positions (Cun, Guan, Chi) are equal in floating and sinking depth without any signs of disease, one can know that there is a pregnancy. Once conception has occurred, many women suffer from "E Zu" (morning sickness).
"E Zu" refers to aversion to food. This arises because the woman's constitution was originally deficient. In daily life, if emotions such as joy and anger are not regulated, or if she exposes herself to wind and cold, phlegm-fluid retention may accumulate in the Middle Jiao (epigastrium). After conception, menstrual blood stops. Food intake clashes with internal phlegm-qi, causing the Qi mechanism to fail to circulate freely. Consequently, one experiences oppression and stuffiness below the heart, dizziness, blurred vision, heaviness in the four limbs, lassitude, vomiting upon smelling food, craving for sour foods, excessive sleeping with little rising, and in severe cases, violent vomiting and retching, making the body unable to endure. The treatment method involves regulating Qi and nourishing Blood, resolving phlegm and promoting urination, after which peace will be restored.
Jiawei Shanju San (Modified Ginseng and Tangerina Peel Powder): Treats morning sickness, vomiting, retching, anorexia, or irritability and chest stuffiness during the second or third month of pregnancy.
Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma, 1 qian), Ju Hong (Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae, 4 fen), Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, 1 qian), Mai Dong (Ophiopogonis Radix, 1 qian), Hou Po (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex, 2 qian), Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, 2 qian), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 3 fen), Sha Ren (Amomi Fructus, 3 fen, stir-fried), Huo Xiang (Pogostemonis Herba, 2 fen), Zhu Ru (Bambusae Caulis in Taenia, 1 pill), Sheng Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens, 3 slices).
Decoct in water and take orally. Alternatively, add Gan Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma, 0.5 fen).
Suosha Yin (Amomum Decoction): Treats pregnancy complicated by Spleen-Stomach deficiency with rebellious Qi, vomiting, and anorexia.
Sha Ren (Amomi Fructus) in any quantity, ground into powder. Take 2 qian each time, washed down with Ginger Decoction.
In general, when a pregnant woman experiences restless fetus and abdominal pain in the second or third month, this is due to the harmonious union of Yin and Yang between man and woman, resulting in balanced Blood and Qi forming the fetus. If there is abdominal distension and pain due to Blood stasis, it is likely caused by long-term uterine deficiency leading to fetal descent, which is more severe than normal delivery. If a pregnancy has suffered this previously, one can preemptively take Dazao Wan (now known as Eucommia Pill) to nourish the fetus.
Duzhong Wan (Eucommia Pill): Du Zhong (Eucommiae Cortex, stir-fried with Ginger Juice until silk threads are removed), Chuan Xu Duan (Dipsaci Radix, soaked in Wine), each 2 liang.
Grind the above two ingredients into powder. Boil with Date Flesh, pound until smooth, and mix to form pills the size of Sophora seeds. Take 50-60 pills each time, washed down with Rice Water on an empty stomach.
The reasons for restless fetus and abdominal pain during pregnancy vary. It may be due to consuming cold foods or wind-toxic substances, or engaging in intercourse again, shaking the bones and joints, injuring the Bao Tai (uterus/fetus). Symptoms often include vomiting and disharmonious Qi. Over-medication can cause interference between Blood and Qi. One should urgently administer Qi-regulating herbs to calm the fetus; otherwise, bleeding will be difficult to treat.
Rusheng San (Like-Sage Powder): Li Yu Pi (Carassius Auratus Skin), Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Huai Shu Di (Rehmanniae Radix Preparata), E Jiao (Colla Corii Asini, stir-fried), Bai Shao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), Chuan Xiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Xu Duan (Dipsaci Radix, soaked in wine), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma).
Take equal parts of the above. Add a small amount of Zhu Ma Gen (Ramie Root) and 5 slices of Sheng Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens). Decoct in water and take on an empty stomach.
Jiwei Antai Yin (Modified Fetus-Calming Decoction): Treats pregnancy complicated by Yuan Qi deficiency, fatigue, leading to restless fetus, or slight fever. Can also be used for lower back pain or leg pain. For these symptoms, two doses must be taken within one day and night to ensure stability.
Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma, 2-3 qian), Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, 2 qian), Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, 2.5 qian, raw), Tiao Qin (Scutellariae Radix, 8 fen), Chen Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Zi Su (Perillae Folium, 4 fen each), Huai Shu Di (Rehmanniae Radix Preparata, 2 qian), Sha Ren (Amomi Fructus, 3 fen, stir-fried), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 3 fen).
If thirsty, add Mai Dong (Ophiopogonis Radix, 1 qian) and 2 Zao (Jujubae Fructus). Decoct in water.
My commentary: Securing the fetus depends on regulating the mother. The method of regulating the mother should follow the meridians according to each month, observing the deficiency or excess of Blood and Qi to adjust accordingly. Thus, there will be no risk of miscarriage. However, if contracted Wind-Cold or suffering from falls/trauma leading to other symptoms, they must be treated according to their specific methods. *Jiyao* states: Diseases related to pregnancy and childbirth should be discussed from the perspective of the Jueyin Meridian. Do not injure Stomach Qi and the Upper and Middle Jiao; this is called the "Three Prohibitions": do not induce sweating, do not purge downwards, and do not promote diuresis. Inducing sweat resembles early purging in Cold Damage disorders; harmonizing stool moves the Pulse-Shu (heat) in the Spleen; promoting diuresis depletes internal Body Fluids, causing dryness in the Stomach. The principle of formula preparation is to avoid these three prohibitions, so that Ying and Wei will naturally harmonize and chills/fever will cease. These are the standards for physicians.
I say: For calming the fetus, Sang Ji Sheng (Taxilli Herba), E Jiao (Colla Corii Asini), and Suo Sha (Amomi Fructus) are essential herbs. Herbs like Gui Zhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus), Ban Xia (Pinelliae Rhizoma), Tao Ren (Persicae Semen), and Da Huang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma), which cause miscarriage or are drying/hot, must not be used. Furthermore, if menstruation is delayed but the whole body becomes ill, wasting away resembling consumptive disease, it may actually be pregnancy. Use Er Chen Tang (Two-Aged Decoction) added with Suo Sha (Amomi Fructus), Gui Zhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus), Jie Geng (Platycodonis Radix), Sheng Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens), Zao (Jujubae Fructus), and Wu Mei (Mume Fructus). Although Ban Xia (Pinelliae Rhizoma) is contraindicated in pregnancy, it is used here to regulate Qi and clear phlegm; Sha Ren (Amomi Fructus) calms the fetus and regulates Qi; Jie Geng (Platycodonis Radix) opens the chest and diaphragm. Taking this will naturally bring peace. The *Classic* says: "If there is a cause [of disease], there is no damage [to the healthy qi]; thus, no damage occurs."
Regarding "Tai Lou" (fetal leakage) where menstrual blood flows irregularly, this occurs when the fetus has formed but its respiration/vitality is not yet solid. Causes include sexual activity, shock, overexertion injuring the Bao Tai (uterus/fetus), or ingesting toxic foods leading to uterine coldness and dripping blood. If not treated urgently,敗血 (rotten blood) will gather at the Heart, endangering both mother and child. The fetus will gradually dry up, posing imminent danger.
Sang Jisheng San (Taxillus Powder): Treats pregnancy with restless fetus and continuous vaginal bleeding.
Sang Ji Sheng (Taxilli Herba), Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Chuan Xiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Xu Duan (Dipsaci Radix, soaked in wine), Xiang Fu (Cyperi Rhizoma, processed), E Jiao (Colla Corii Asini, stir-fried), Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), Fu Ling (Poria), Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) in equal parts (raw), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, a little), Sheng Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens, 5 slices).
Decoct in water and take warm.

For lower back pain, add Du Zhong (Eucommiae Cortex). For bleeding, add Di Yu (Sanguisorbae Radix). For traumatic injury to the fetus, add Jin Yin Hua (Lonicerae Japonicae Flos) and decoct together. Add 3 slices of Sheng Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens), decoct in water and take.
When a pregnant woman presents with red face, dry mouth, bitter taste, irritability, and abdominal distension, it is likely due to excessive alcohol consumption, eating fruits, mutton, chicken, noodles, fish, or pungent/toxic foods. This causes soreness and pain in all joints, constipation of urine and feces. One can take Guiliang Jieming San (Blood-Cooling Life-Preserving Powder).
Guiliang Jieming San: Chuan Xiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Zhu Gen (Phragmitis Rhizoma), Bai Shao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), Mai Dong (Ophiopogonis Radix), Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Nu Mi (Glutinosis Oryzae Semen).
If there is food stagnation, add Sha Ren (Amomi Fructus), Shan Zha (Crataegi Fructus), Mai Ya (Hordei Fructus Germinatus). Decoct in water and take warm.
Dafupi Yin (Areca Peel Decoction): Treats dark and scanty urine and difficult defecation.
Zhi Ke (Aurantii Fructus, stir-fried), Dafupi (Arecae Pericarpium), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Chi Fu Ling (Poria with Red Host, i.e., Poria Cocos with Porium Rubrum).
Grind into powder. Take 2 qian each time, mixed with strong Scallion White Decoction.
Dongkuizi San (Malva Seed Powder): Treats pregnancy with difficult urination, heavy body, aversion to cold, dizziness, blurred vision, and edema.
Dong Ku Zi (Malvae Semen, 2 qian), Chi Fu Ling (Poria with Red Host, i.e., Poria Cocos with Porium Rubrum, 2 qian).
Grind into powder. Take 3 qian each time, washed down with Rice Water at any time. Stop when urination flows freely. If it does not flow, it may be "Zhuan Bao" (retained urine due to uterine pressure). Add a little Fa Hui (Ash of Hair) for miraculous effect. If warming Spleen/Stomach or Qi-moving medicines, or inducing vomiting by finger stimulation, fail and worsen abdominal fullness pressing on the heart, preventing passage, a secret method is to insert one finger deeply into the vagina to rotate and release the obstruction immediately, then take Liyu Tang (Carp Decoction). Zi Yun says: For swollen feet, commonly called "Zhoujiao Tang", or generalized edema with chest tightness, these are also excellent.
Liyu Tang (Carp Decoction): Treats antenatal edema, promoting fluid metabolism. Also effective postpartum.
Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, soaked in wine), Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, 5 qian), Bai Fu Ling (Poria, 4 qian), Bai Shao (Paeoniae Radix Alba, 3 fen).
Slice the herbs. Take 4 qian each time. Use 2-3 carps (any size), clean scales and entrails, boil in plain water until cooked. Remove the fish. Take 1.5 bowls of the fish broth each time, add 7 slices of Sheng Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens) and a little Chen Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium). Decoct and take on an empty stomach; fluids will pass naturally.
When a woman has cold womb causing abdominal distension, empty ringing in the hypochondrium, cold pain below the umbilicus, and desire to defecate. Frequent urination, loose stools. This indicates the fetus is fully formed. Eating fruits, sweets, or cold/raw foods at improper times, or exposing oneself to wind/cold, leads to fetal coldness. The fetus becomes unstable, causing skin/hair pain, muscle/tendon stiffness, limb curling, creating a critical condition for the mother. Urgently use Antai Heqi San (Fetus-Calming and Qi-Harmonizing Powder).
Antai Heqi San: He Zi (Terminalia Chebulae Fructus, baked in flour), Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, 1 liang each), Chen Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, peeled, 5 qian), Liang Jiang (Alpiniae Officinarum Rhizoma, 2 qian, stir-fried), Mu Xiang (Aucklandiae Radix, 5 qian), Bai Shao (Paeoniae Radix Alba, 5 qian), Chen Mi (Old Rice, 1 he, stir-fried), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, honey-fried, 3 qian).
Cut into pieces. Take 5 qian each time, with 3 jin of Sheng Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens), decoct in water. Avoid cold/raw foods.
When a pregnant woman experiences palpitations, frequent nightmares, abdominal distension in the hypochondrium, cramping pain connecting to the umbilicus, restlessness, rapid breathing, and fetal fright. Why? Once fetal Qi is formed and the Five Zang organs are nourished, if there is Qi stagnation or noise/shouting causing palpitations and confusion, it startles the fetus, causing pain in muscles/bones and restlessness in the four limbs. Urgently use Dasheng San (Great Sage Powder) to protect the fetus to prevent injury.
Dasheng San: Chuan Xiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma, 2 qian), Bai Fu Ling (Poria, 2 qian), Mai Dong (Ophiopogonis Radix, 2 qian), Huang Qi (Astragali Radix, 2 qian, honey-fried), Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, 2 qian), Mu Xiang (Aucklandiae Radix, 5 fen), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 5 fen), Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma, 5 fen).
Add 3 slices of Sheng Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens), decoct in water and take.
Zisu Yin (Perilla Decoction): Treats pregnant women with disharmonious fetal Qi, rushing upward causing chest/abdominal fullness and unbearable pain, called "Zi Xuan" (Fetal Suspension).
Da Fu Pi (Arecae Pericarpium), Chuan Xiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Bai Shao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), Chen Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Zi Su (Perillae Folium), Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) in equal parts. Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, half dose).
Add 5 slices of Sheng Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens) and 5 cun of Cong Bai (Allii Fistulosi Bulbus). Decoct in water and take warm.
When a pregnant woman suffers spontaneous abortion before term, it is due to inherent deficiency of the Zang-Fu organs, weak Qi and strength. Pathogenic factors interact, attacking Essence and Blood, damaging Ying and Wei, injuring the Bao Tai (uterus/fetus), leading to loss. This is called "Ban Chan" (partial delivery/miscarriage). Urgently use Xiong Gui Buzhong Tang (Cyathula and Angelica Center-Nourishing Decoction) to tonify and treat, ensuring safety.
Xiong Gui Buzhong Tang: Nourishes new Blood, removes stagnant Blood, tonifies deficiency.
Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), Huang Qi (Astragali Radix), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Du Zhong (Eucommiae Cortex), Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Chi Shao (Paeoniae Radix Rubra), Mu Xiang (Aucklandiae Radix), Gan Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma), Chuan Xiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), E Jiao (Colla Corii Asini), Wu Wei Zi (Schisandrae Chinensis Fructus).
Decoct in water and take warm at any time.
Taking Bumu Yizi Dazao Wan (Mother-Nourishing Child-Benefiting Great Creation Pill) for this condition prevents such issues.
When a pregnant woman has dribbling urination, it is due to improper care and deficiency of Zi Zang (uterine) Qi. Likely caused by excessive alcohol and sex, injuring Blood and Qi, leading to urinary obstruction and subsequent dribbling, named "Zi Lin" (Fetal Strangury). Take Anrong San (Nourishing Peace Powder).
Anrong San: Treats pregnancy with dribbling urination or lower Jiao heat causing urinary retention.

Grind into powder. Wash down with Mai Dong (Ophiopogonis Radix) Decoction.
Sang Piaoxiao San (Mantis Egg Case Powder): Treats pregnancy with urinary incontinence.
Sang Piaoxiao (Mantidis Oötheca, 12 pieces, roasted). Grind into powder. Take 2 qian each time, washed down with Rice Water on an empty stomach.
When a pregnant woman has dysentery with red and white discharge, it is due to cold foods injuring the Spleen, pungent/sour foods injuring the Stomach, imbalance of cold and heat, unsettling fetal Qi, stagnation of Blood and Qi, frequent dysentery varying in color (white or red), borborygmus, tenesmus, and anal pain. Urgently take Meng Jiang Huanglian Wan (Meng Jiang Coptis Pill), suitable for both cold and heat types.
Meng Jiang Huanglian Wan: Gan Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma, roasted), Huang Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma), Sha Ren (Amomi Fructus), Chuan Xiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), E Jiao (Colla Corii Asini, stir-fried), Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) each 1 liang. For white dysentery, wash down with Ginger Decoction; for red dysentery, with Licorice Decoction; for mixed red/white, with Gan Jiang-Gan Cao Decoction.
Danggui Shaoyao Tang (Angelica and Peony Decoction): Treats pregnancy with abdominal pain, dysentery, and epigastric urgency/fullness.
Bai Shao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), Bai Fu Ling (Poria), Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Ze Xie (Alismatis Rhizoma), Chuan Xiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma) each 1 liang. Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, 5 qian).
Grind into powder. Take 3 qian each time, washed down with warm wine or Rice Water. Avoid cold/raw foods.
When a pregnant woman contracts external Wind-Cold, presenting with high fever, dizziness, and spinning sensation. This is due to Wind-Cold overcoming the Spleen-Stomach and damaging Ying and Wei, or exposing the back to wind/cold, causing headache, aversion to cold and fever, even irritability and chest stuffiness. Generally, prenatal conditions involve two lives, so one must not casually prescribe decoctions. At the onset of a cold, only use Xiong Su San (Cyathula and Perilla Powder) to release the exterior pathogen, and the illness will heal itself.
Xiong Su San: Su Ye (Perillae Folium), Chuan Xiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Bai Shao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Mai Dong (Ophiopogonis Radix), Chen Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Gan Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma) each 1 liang. Quxie San: Liang Jiang (Alpiniae Officinarum Rhizoma), Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Cao Guo (Tsao-ko Fructus, a little), Ju Hong (Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae), Huo Xiang (Pogostemonis Herba), Sha Ren (Amomi Fructus), Bai Fu Ling (Poria), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, honey-fried).
Add 3 slices of Sheng Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens) and 3 pieces of Zao Rou (Date Flesh). Decoct in water and take warm.
When a pregnant woman has stabbing pain and distension throughout the body and hypochondrium. This is due to dysfunction of the Five Zang organs, emaciation of Blood and Qi, eating cold/raw foods, fever with aversion to cold, pale lips, blue eyes, tendon spasms, bone/joint pain, dry skin, rapid breathing/wheezing, constipation, and frequent vomiting. Take Ping'an San (Peace Powder).
Ping'an San: Hou Po (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex), Sheng Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens), Chen Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Chuan Xiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Mu Xiang (Aucklandiae Radix), Sheng Di (Rehmanniae Radix), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Wei Yan (Roasted Salt, a pinch).
Decoct in water and take warm. Also suitable to take Zisu San (Perilla Powder).
When a pregnant woman has dizziness, blurred vision, inability to see, and swelling/lumps in cheeks/neck.
