The female body is the convergence point of numerous Yin meridians and is often prone to dampness; its health depends on abundant blood and balanced Qi. When blood is abundant and Qi is mild, it is termed "Shun" (Harmony), in which state diseases do not arise. When blood is deficient and Qi is hyperactive, it is termed "Ni" (Rebellion/Inversion), in which state illnesses and disasters emerge. Moreover, women have more desires than men, and thus suffer from diseases twice as frequently as men. When women fall ill, their conditions are ten times harder to treat than those of men, a fact that must not be overlooked. If the illness arises from seasonal changes, emotional fluctuations (joy, anger, worry, thought), improper diet, or sexual excess, the pathology is identical to that of men.
Generally, female diseases stem from irregular menstruation, which gives rise to various symptoms. Regular menstrual cycles indicate health. If menstruation is delayed, one must assess deficiency vs. excess and cold vs. heat to regulate it. Menstruation occurring early is due to Blood Heat; menstruation occurring late is due to Blood Cold. For Heat, clear it; for Cold, warm it. However, one must carefully examine whether there are signs of external pathogenic factors. Medication should only be administered after distinguishing these patterns. The menstrual period and postpartum stage share similar vulnerabilities; if care is improper, the disease will become severe. If startled, Qi and Blood may become disordered, leading to amenorrhea. If Qi and Blood rebel upward, bleeding may occur from the mouth and nose; if they rebel internally, they may cause consumptive diseases (Lao Zhai) involving the Blood level. Excessive labor generates Deficient Heat, becoming the root of pain.
Furthermore, female diseases often result from emotional entanglements such as love, hate, jealousy, worry, and resentment. Depression that cannot be resolved internally leads to deep-seated and stubborn conditions, making treatment ten times more difficult than for men. In severe cases, anger causes Qi to rebel upward; Qi rebellion leads to Blood rebellion. Blood rebellion manifests as pain in the waist, legs, heart, abdomen, back, and hypochondrium, typically flaring during menstruation and subsiding afterward. Extreme anger damages the Liver, causing blurred vision, dizziness, and vomiting. Combined with leakage from the meridians, this can lead to persistent spotting or continuous dripping. If left untreated, exposure to Wind causes Wind diseases, and exposure to Cold causes Cold diseases. Over time, this may lead to metrorrhagia (Beng Lou), leukorrhea (Dai Xia), and abdominal masses (Zhen Jia), eventually becoming chronic, intractable diseases. To prevent disease before it occurs, regulating menstruation should be the priority. Therefore, specific methods for women have been established to enable self-care and regulation, which represents the ideal approach.
