Wine is originally used for sacrificing to Heaven and Earth, harmonizing with the world and interpersonal relations, circulating Qi and Blood, thereby tempering one's nature. For those in the world who can drink, it is indeed indispensable not to lack it completely. However, whenever encountering cold weather, exposure to rain and dew, or entering a sick person's home, one should only drink three to five cups to invigorate the spirit and ward off epidemics. Drinkers must act according to their capacity. Excessive drinking will consume and damage Qi and Blood.
As the ancients said: "Drink without losing measure, do not reach the point of confusion." This statement is indeed credible. Drinkers rarely obtain the benefit of harmonizing Qi and Blood; instead, they often injure the Spleen and Stomach, damage the physical form, disturb their temperament, and reverse right and wrong, all due to this substance. Morning drinking injures the Stomach; overnight wine injures the Spleen, leading to vomiting of phlegm and foam. Engaging in sexual activity after getting drunk exhausts Essence (Jing), causing people to die without even knowing it. Even those who know better are often intoxicated by it and fail to abstain. Truly wise individuals should practice restraint in desires to nourish their Spirit (Shen) and regulate their diet to prolong their lifespan. These are the maxims of the ancient sages and serve as a mirror for future generations.
The *Bencao* states: Wine has a great heat property and is toxic; it greatly assists Fire. Once swallowed, the Lung receives it first. The Lung is the canopy of the five Zang organs, belongs to Metal, and is naturally dry. Wine's nature tends to ascend, so Qi follows it upward, causing Phlegm to stagnate in the upper Jiao and urine to become obstructed in the lower Jiao. When the Lung is invaded by pathogenic factors, it fails to generate Kidney Water. Without sufficient Water to control Heart Fire, various diseases arise. Initially, the disease is shallow, manifesting as vomiting, spontaneous sweating, sores and scabies, epistaxis, diarrhea or dysentery, or Heart-Spleen pain, which can still be dispersed and expelled. If prolonged, the disease becomes deep, potentially developing into Xiao Ke (wasting-thirst syndrome), internal abscesses, Fei Wei (lung atrophy), hemorrhoids and fistulas, Gu Zhang (drum-like distension/ascites), Huang Dan (jaundice), blindness, asthma, Lao Sou (chronic cough), blood epistaxis/hematemesis, Dian Xian (epilepsy), and other indescribable conditions. Unless treated by a highly skilled physician, these are difficult to manage. Can those addicted to wine afford to be careless?
First Discussion: To treat alcohol-related illness, diaphoresis (sweating) should be employed first; alternatively, promoting urination is effective, allowing the dampness to be eliminated from above and below. This prescription treats symptoms caused by excessive drinking, such as vomiting with phlegm reversal, mental restlessness and confusion, chest and diaphragm fullness and obstruction, trembling of hands and feet, difficulty in urination, loose stools, and reduced appetite. It is suitable to take Ge Hua Jie Cheng Tang (Kudzu Flower Decoction to Relieve Intoxication).
Ge Hua (Kudzu Flower, 5 qian) Sha Ren (Amomum Fruit, 5 qian) Bai Dou Kou (White Cardamom, peeled, 5 qian) Ren Shen (Ginseng Root, 2.5 qian) Bai Zhu (Atractylodes Rhizome, de-rhizome and stir-fried, 2 qian) Bai Fu Ling (Poria, peeled, 1.5 qian) Qing Pi (Green Tangerine Peel, de-albedo, 1.5 qian) Chen Pi (Tangerine Peel, 1.5 qian) Mu Xiang (Costus Root, 5 qian) Zhu Ling (Polyporus, 1.5 qian) Ze Xie (Alisma Rhizome, 2 qian) Shen Qu (Medicated Leaven, stir-fried, 2 qian) Gan Sheng Jiang (Dried Ginger, 2 qian). For those with existing heat, add Huang Lian (Coptis Rhizome, stir-fried with ginger juice, 1 qian).
Grind the above ingredients into a fine powder and mix evenly. Take 3 qian each time, mixed with warm water. As long as a slight sweat occurs, the alcohol illness will be resolved. The discussion states: These measures are used only when unavoidable. How can one rely on them to drink every day? This formula has acrid and warm properties. Taking it occasionally for alcohol illness will not damage Yuan Qi (Original Qi), because it counteracts the alcohol illness. However, frequent use will damage one's natural lifespan.
Second Treatment: For coma due to strong liquor intoxication, urgently use slices of Mung Bean Powder skin. Pry open the mouth with chopsticks and administer with cold water.
Third Discussion: This medicine strengthens the Spleen, promotes appetite, and prevents drunkenness. Use Ba Xian Cuo San (Eight Immortals Chopped Powder).
Ding Xiang (Clove) Sha Ren (Amomum Fruit) Bai Dou Kou (White Cardamom, peeled, 3 qian each) Fen Ge (Kudzu Root, 2 liang) Bai Yao Jian (Fermented Tea Cake, 2.5 qian) Mu Gua (Chaenomeles Fruit, salt-cured, 1 liang) Shao Yan (Calcined Salt, 1 liang) Gan Cao (Licorice Root, 1.5 qian).
Chop finely. For those unable to drink alcohol, chew 1 qian thoroughly and swallow with warm wine. One will be able to drink without getting drunk. This may only be taken temporarily; excessive consumption will inevitably damage Yuan Qi.
Fourth Discussion: For excessive drinking resulting in severe intoxication and inability to wake, taking this formula will resolve it.
Shi Ge Tang (Gypsum and Kudzu Decoction)
Shi Gao (Gypsum Fibrosum, 5 liang) Ge Gen (Kudzu Root, chopped) Sheng Jiang (Fresh Ginger, chopped, 5 qian each).
Chop finely. Take 5 qian each time, decoct in water and take warm.
Fifth Discussion: For abdominal and diaphragmatic Qi stagnation with fullness, yellow-black complexion, impending accumulation disease, loss of appetite, and progressive emaciation. If one wishes to drink, take this beforehand to avoid drunkenness even with heavy consumption.
Bai Bei Wan (Hundred Cups Pill)
Ding Xiang (Clove, 50 pieces) Ju Hong (Tangerine Albedo) Xiao Hui Xiang (Fennel Seed) San Leng (Curcuma Zedoaria Rhizome, processed, 3 qian) E Zhu (Curcuma Phaeocaulis Rhizome, processed, 3 qian) Sha Ren (Amomum Fruit) Bai Dou Kou (White Cardamom, 30 pieces) Gan Jiang (Dried Ginger, 3 qian) Sheng Jiang (Fresh Ginger, 1 liang, peeled, sliced, soaked in 1 liang salt overnight, then dried) Gan Cao (Licorice Root, honey-fried, 2 qian) Ren Shen (Ginseng Root, 3 qian) Mu Xiang (Costus Root, 2 qian).
Grind into a fine powder, make pills with refined honey, coat with Cinnabar (Zhu Sha). Each 1 liang makes 5 pills. Take 1 pill each time, chew thoroughly, and swallow with Ginger Decoction.
Sixth Discussion: For Alcohol Accumulation (Jiu Ji), presenting with yellow-black complexion and persistent abdominal distension. Take Gan Sui (Euphorbia Kansui Root) 1 qian powdered, mixed with 1 liang of pork neck meat cut into paste. Mix evenly, form one pill, wrap in paper, and roast until fragrant and cooked. Remove and chew thoroughly before bed, swallowing with good wine.
Jie Jiu Xian Dan (Immortal Alcohol-Resolving Elixir) (Transmitted by the Zeng Family).
Bai Guo Ren (Ginkgo Seed, 8 liang) Pu Tao (Grape, 8 liang) Bo He Ye (Mint Leaf, 1 liang) Ce Bai Zhi (Platycladus Branch, 1 liang) Xi Xin (Asarum Root, 5 fen) Nao Nao (Camphor/Borneol, 5 fen) Xi Cha (Fine Tea, 4 liang) Dang Gui (Angelica Sinensis Root, 5 qian) Ding Xiang (Clove, 5 fen) Guan Gui (Cinnamon Bark, 5 fen) Sha Ren (Amomum Fruit, 1 liang) Gan Song (Nardostachys Root, 1 liang).
Grind into a fine powder, make pills with refined honey, size like Euryale Seed (Qian Shi). Take 1 pill each time, chew thoroughly, and swallow with clear tea. Extremely effective in resolving intoxication.
Shen Xian Xing Jiu Dan (Immortal Awakening Alcohol Elixir) (Transmitted by Prince Jingshan of Zhou Fan).
Ge Hua (Kudzu Flower, 5 fen) Chi Xiao Dou Hua (Red Adzuki Bean Flower) Lv Dou Hua (Mung Bean Flower, 2 liang each) Jia Ge Hua (Domestic Kudzu Flower, pounded and washed for starch, 8 liang) Zhen Shi Shuang (True Persimmon Frost, 4 liang) Bai Dou Kou (White Cardamom, 5 qian).
Take the fine powder, mix evenly, and knead into pills using fresh Lotus Root Juice, size like marbles. Take 1 pill each time, chew and swallow. Instantly awakens the patient.
Seventh Discussion: For drinkers with deficient Yuan Qi, weak limbs, reduced appetite, and flushed face resembling makeup. Use Bu Zhong Yi Qi Tang (Tonify the Middle and Augment the Qi Decoction - see Tonification section), adding Chen Pi (Tangerine Peel), Ban Xia (Pinellia Tuber), Gan Ge (Dried Kudzu Root), Bai Shao (White Peony Root), Shen Qu (Medicated Leaven), Mai Ya (Barley Sprout), and Zhi Ke (Bitter Orange Fruit). If urine is obstructed, add Mai Men Dong (Ophiopogon Tuber, 3 qian). If stool is obstructed, add Tao Ren (Peach Seed, 1 qian), Hong Hua (Safflower, 1 qian), and Huo Ma Ren (Hemp Seed, 1.5 qian).
Eighth Case: A scholar who drinks heavily presented with loose stools, difficult urination, reduced food intake, chest fullness, and gradual swelling of legs and feet. The syndrome belongs to Spleen-Kidney Yang Deficiency and Cold. Use Jia Jian Jin Kui Shen Qi Wan (Modified Golden Chamber Kidney Qi Pill) to improve appetite and reduce swelling. Subsequently use Ba Wei Wan (Eight-Ingredient Pill), resulting in recovery through strengthened Stomach and Spleen function.
Ninth Case: A man who drinks heavily presented with diarrhea, abdominal distension, vomiting of phlegm, and dry mouth. This indicates deficiency of Spleen-Stomach Qi. First use Liu Jun Zi Tang (Six Gentlemen Decoction) plus Shen Qu (Medicated Leaven) to stop vomiting. Then use Yi Qi Tang (Qi-Augmenting Decoction) plus Fu Ling (Poria) and Ban Xia (Pinellia Tuber) to resolve distension. Also recovered.
If this syndrome is due to Damp-Heat congestion, use Ge Hua Jie Cheng Tang to separate and eliminate dampness. After dampness is removed but diarrhea persists, use Liu Jun Zi Tang plus Shen Qu to strengthen the Spleen Earth and transform alcohol accumulation. Although caused by alcohol, the root cause is actually Spleen Earth weakness, failing to properly manage Damp-Heat.
Xing Zui Tang (Awakening Drunkenness Decoction): Use green olives. Discard yellow/damaged ones. Rub off the rough skin and pits on a tile, slice finely into shreds (1 jin). Mix with 2 liang of Licorice Powder and 2 liang of stir-fried salt. Seal in a porcelain jar. Take by pouring boiling water over it. Naturally generates body fluids; excellent for waking from drunkenness.
Jiu Yin Bu Zui Fang (Formula for Drinking Without Getting Drunk)
Bo He (Mint Herb, 5 qian) Gan Ge (Dried Kudzu Root, 2 liang) Gui Hua (Osmanthus Flower, 3 qian) Bai Mei Rou (White Plum Flesh, 5 qian).
Grind into powder and make pills. Place under the tongue before drinking; alcohol will naturally dissolve.
Duan Jiu Fa (Method to Quit Alcohol): Burn Donkey Placenta (Lv Bao Yi) to ash, mix with wine, and take.
Shang Jiu Bu Yao Fa (Non-Medicinal Method for Alcohol Injury): For feeling of stagnation of alcohol and food in the heart/chest, or excessive drinking urged by others, resulting in unrelieved chest and abdominal fullness.
Frequently rub teeth with Salt Flower (Yan Hua), rinse mouth with warm water and swallow. Within three times, it feels like hot water pouring on snow, instantly relaxing the intestines and bringing relief. A truly wonderful method.
Tenth Treatment: For excessive drinking causing heat accumulation in the chest and diaphragm, leading to hematemesis or epistaxis.
Ge Hua (Kudzu Flower, 2 liang) Huang Lian (Coptis Rhizome, 4 liang).
Grind into powder. Make pills using Da Huang (Rhubarb Rhizome) powder boiled into a paste, size like Wutong seeds. Take 100 pills each time, swallow with warm water.
Eleventh Case: A man drank excessively, fell into deep drunkenness, and could not wake up. His family was panicked and helpless. They came to me. I used tender leaves from a Camphor tree, dried and powdered, mixed equally with true Ge Hua powder. Take 3 qian each time, mixed with plain boiled water. Immediately cured.
