Treatment for infantile "Tian Diao" (convulsive disorder with tidal fever).
Gouteng San (Uncaria Decoction)
Ingredients: Gouteng (Uncariae Ramulus cum Uncis), Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), Xijiao (Rhinocerotis Cornu, note: substitute with Buffalo Horn in modern practice), Quanxie (Scorpio), Tianma (Gastrodiae Rhizoma) [each 5 qian], Gancao (Licorice Root, roasted) [1.5 qian].
Preparation and Administration: Coarsely crush the herbs into four doses. Decoct in water. Take warm.
Discussion on infantile "E Kou" (thrush). Oral ulcers are caused by damp-heat in the stomach. Various diseases of the infant's mouth, such as E Kou, oral ulcers, and Chong She (double tongue), prevent the infant from suckling milk. It also involves swelling and obstruction of the throat. These are all conditions caused by heat-toxins.
Niuhuang San (Calculus Bovis Powder)
Ingredients: Niuhuang (Calculus Bovis), Bingpian (Borneolum Syntheticum), Pengsha (Borax), Chensha (Cinnabaris) [ground, each 1 fen], Xionghuang (Realgar), Qingdai (Indigo Naturalis) [each 2 fen], Yaxiao (Natrii Sulfas), Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma, powdered) [8 fen], Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex, powdered) [8 fen].
Preparation and Administration: Grind all ingredients uniformly in a mortar. Apply a small amount to the inside of the mouth each time.
For treating infantile E Kou where the infant cannot feed, apply water prepared by grinding Dilong (Pheretima) to the affected area; the sores will heal. Dilong is also known as Mochong.
For treating oral ulcers.
Xiexin Tang (Drain the Heart Decoction)
Usage: Use finely purified Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma) ground into fine powder. Take one "yi zi" (a traditional small weight measure) per dose, mixed with honey water and swallowed.
Discussion on infants developing sores on the mouth and tongue, caused by heat in the Heart and Spleen. Red oral ulcers indicate Heat in the Heart; white oral ulcers indicate Cold in the Spleen; yellow oral ulcers indicate Heat in the Spleen.
It is appropriate to use Wuzhuyu (Evodiae Fructus) powder, mixed with vinegar, applied to the sole of the foot. Healing occurs overnight. Although the medicinal nature is hot, it guides heat downward, achieving excellent results.
Discussion on infants suffering from widespread white ulceration in the mouth, named Kou Mi (oral candidiasis/mucositis).
Ingredients: Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Zhuling (Polyporus), Zexie (Alismatis Rhizoma), Mutong (Akebiae Caulis), Shengdi (Rehmanniae Radix), Chiling (Poria with Red Core), Rougui (Cinnamomi Cortex), Gancao (Licorice Root) [equal parts].
Preparation and Administration: Decoct in water and take orally.
Discussion on infantile white oral ulcers: Stir-fry Huandan (Lithargyrum) together with Badou Ren (Crotonis Semen) until scorched, remove the Badou Ren and use only the Huandan. Sprinkle onto the sores for immediate effect.
For throat and oral ulcers, I also have an effective prescription. Use approximately 1 qian of Bai Fan (Alumen) and slightly more than 1 qian of Pengsha (Borax). For sore throat, insufflate the powder into the throat; for oral ulcers, mix with honey and apply. If not healed after one application, apply again to ensure health.
Discussion on Chong She (Double Tongue): This is due to Excess Fire in the Spleen Meridian. When the infant's Heart and Spleen have heat, a growth resembling a smaller tongue appears under the actual tongue, named Chong She. This may be accompanied by sores on the lips and sides of the mouth.
Danggui Lianqiao Tang (Angelica and Forsythia Decoction) treats Chong She.
Ingredients: Guiwei (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, tail), Lianqiao (Forsythiae Fructus), Baizhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix) [each 3 qian], Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, baked), Gancao (Licorice Root, roasted) [each 1 qian].
Preparation and Administration: Coarsely crush into two doses. Decoct in water. Take frequently after meals.
Another method for treating Chong She: Apply Puhuang (Lygodii Spora) powder to the affected area.
Another method: Apply finely ground Danfan (Chalcanthite) to the affected area.
For treating infantile Chong She and Mu She (Wooden Tongue), which involves a tongue-like structure growing under the tongue: Use a three-edged needle to prick the purple veins under the tongue; this will bring about healing. Additionally, it is suitable to mix Puhuang (Lygodii Spora) powder with Zhuli (Bambusa Textilis Sap) and apply it to the surface of the tongue.
For treating Ban She (Bound Tongue): Prick the area under the tongue several times with a cloth-wrapped needle, then apply fresh chicken droppings; this will bring about healing.
For treating infantile Ban She, characterized by muteness and crying: Wrap a needle in cloth, dip it in Tungyou (Verniciae Folium Oil), heat it red-hot, and prick once near the bone edge of the chin; this will cure the condition.
