Chapter: Fangs for Sterilization / Amenorrhea
Category: Health Preservation
[English Translation]
For women desiring sterilization (permanent cessation of pregnancy), this is not an easy matter. Herein are recorded several verified prescriptions for reference. However, although there are many such prescriptions, some employ substances like mercury (Shuiyin), fly larvae (Machong), and leeches (Shuizhi). While they may prevent conception, they inevitably cause harm to the body. The following prescription is mild in nature yet effective, and is therefore listed below.
One Verified Prescription for Female Sterilization
Burn old mulberry paper cut into a square or circle one chi in size into ash. Mix with wine and take orally. This will result in lifelong infertility.
Qianjin Sterilization Prescription
Fry mercury in oil until it ceases after one day. Take one pill the size of a jujube on an empty stomach. This permanently prevents pregnancy without damaging the human body.
A Method for Preventing Offspring
Take one sheng of white flour and three dou of unadulterated wine. Stir into a paste and boil until reduced to two and a half sheng. Filter through a silk bag to remove dregs. Divide into three doses. On the day menstruation begins, take one dose in the evening, one at wugeng (3-5 AM), and one at dawn. Menstruation will then flow freely, resulting in lifelong childlessness.
Regarding pulse diagnosis, the chi pulse (pulse position at the wrist proximal to the elbow, reflecting Kidney and Mingmen status) in women is often prominent, and the right hand pulse is often larger; these are normal variations. If the Kidney pulse is faint and choppy, or floating and slippery, with irregular rhythm; or if the Liver pulse is deep and rapid, these are signs of amenorrhea and menstrual irregularity. Danxi stated: Menstruation may be dry and blocked; it may occur before or after the expected time; it may flow excessively; it may be dark purple or pale; it may contain clots; it may be accompanied by pain.
Menstrual obstruction may be caused by abortion or multiple births injuring the blood; by chronic tidal fever consuming Yin blood; by chronic night sweats depleting blood; by Spleen-Stomach disharmony leading to poor diet and insufficient blood production; or by dysentery with bloody stools. Treatment should employ formulas that generate and tonify blood, clear heat, and regulate the Stomach, adapted to the specific condition.
It may also be caused by the Seven Emotions (Joy, Anger, Worry, Pensiveness, Grief, Fear, Fright) injuring the Heart, causing Qi stagnation and blockage, thus preventing blood flow. Treatment should regulate Heart Qi and unblock the Heart Meridian to promote blood generation and restore spontaneous menstruation.
The following formula treats female amenorrhea, regardless of deficiency/excess, cold/heat, or acute/chronic onset, and is highly effective.
Qingre Tongjing Tang (Heat-Clearing and Menses-Unblocking Decoction)
Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis, washed in wine, 1 qian), Chuanxiong (Rhizoma Chuanxiong, 1 qian), Baishao (Radix Paeoniae Alba, stir-fried in wine, 1 qian), Shengdihuang (Radix Rehmanniae Preparata, 1.5 qian), Dahuang (Radix et Rhizoma Rhei, 0.7 qian), Guangui (Cortex Cinnamomi, 0.4 qian), Houpo (Cortex Magnoliae Officinalis, stir-fried with ginger, 0.8 qian), Zhike (Fructus Aurantii, bran-fried, 1 qian), Sumu (Lignum Sappan, 1 qian), Zhishi (Fructus Aurantii Immaturus, bran-fried, 1 qian), Huangqin (Radix Scutellariae, 1 qian), Honghua (Flos Carthami, 0.5 qian), Wumei (Fructus Mume, 1 piece), Taoren (Semen Persicae, peeled and removed of sharp ends, 10 pieces).

Another treatment for women with weak Stomach Qi who suffer from hematemesis, cough, fever, and night sweats due to weeping for their mother, resulting in amenorrhea. This is injury to the Lung due to grief. Use Buzhong Yiqi Tang (Tonify the Middle and Augment the Qi Decoction) with added Jiegeng (Radix Platycodi) and Beimu (Bulbus Fritillariae Cirrhosae), combined with Liuwei Wan (Six-Ingredient Pill).
A woman had amenorrhea for eight months, with gradually enlarging abdomen and complexion alternating between green and yellow. Treatments for pregnancy were ineffective. Upon examination, I stated: Green complexion and choppy pulse, alternating chills and fever, indicate Liver Meridian pathology. This is a syndrome of Liver-Spleen injury due to depression and anger, not pregnancy. The patient did not believe this and continued using pregnancy-treating powders without success. I prescribed Jiawei Guipi Xiaoyao San (Modified Regulate the Spleen and Soothe the Liver Powder) for over thirty doses, alleviating most symptoms. Desiring quick results, the patient took a dose of Tongjing Wan (Menses-Unblocking Pill) alone, resulting in bleeding, faintness, spontaneous sweating, aversion to cold, cold extremities, vomiting, and loss of appetite. I used Renshen (Radix Ginseng) and Paojiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Preparatum). After two doses, she improved. She was then cured after fifty doses of Shiquan Dabu Tang (Perfect Four Substances Decoction).
A woman suffered from malaria for a long time, with frail physique, internal heat, afternoon fever, spontaneous and night sweats, and poor appetite. Her menstruation ceased. Use of Tongjing Wan resulted in full-blown deficiency syndromes. This was malaria caused by deficiency, which in turn caused amenorrhea. Treatment with Buzhong Yiqi Tang and Liuhuang Diwan (Six-Ingredient Rehmannia Pill) cured the malaria and restored menstruation.
A woman with a quiet, overthinking temperament had absent menstruation, chest fullness, poor appetite, distension, and acid regurgitation. I diagnosed Middle Qi deficiency and cold. One dose of Buzhong Yiqi Tang with added Sharen (Fructus Amomi), Xiangfu (Rhizoma Cyperi Rotundi), and Wei Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Preparatum) harmonized the chest and diaphragm and improved appetite. Then, Liujunzi Tang (Six-Gentlemen Decoction) was added with Chuanxiong (Rhizoma Chuanxiong), Guibei (likely Danggui and Beimu), Jiegeng (Radix Platycodi), Shengjiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens), and Dazao (Fructus Jujubae). After several doses, the Spleen and Stomach strengthened, and menstruation regulated itself.
A woman with pre-existing Stomach Heat was treated with Qingwei San (Clear the Stomach Powder) and recovered. Later, due to labor, she developed dryness, thirst, internal heat, muscle emaciation, and amenorrhea. This was Stomach Heat consuming Yin Blood. I used Xiaoyao San (Free Wanderer Powder) with added Mudanpi (Cortex Moutan) and Chao Zhizi (Fried Semen Gardeniae) to clear Stomach Heat. I used Bazhen Tang (Eight-Treasure Decoction) with added Fuling (Poria) and Yuanzhi (Radix Polygalae) to nourish the Spleen, and menstruation resumed spontaneously.
