Tan (Phlegm) is the sprout of Feng (Wind). Re (Heat) arises from Xin (Heart). Tan (Phlegm) is generated by Huo (Fire). Huo (Fire) is the root of Tan (Phlegm). When static, it lies dormant in Pi (Spleen) Earth; when active, it erupts in Fei (Lung) Metal. Water that is clarified becomes clear; water that boils becomes turbid. Xiao'er (Pediatric) Tan Sou (Phlegmatic Cough) results from Xin Fire controlling Fei Metal, or from Han (Cold) pathogen lingering in the Fei (Lung), transforming into Re (Heat), inevitably generating Tan Chuan (Phlegmic Asthma), Ke Ni Shang Qi (Cough with rebellious Qi ascending), and Fei Zhang (Lung Distension). This is colloquially known as Ma Pi Feng (Horse Spleen Wind) or Hou Feng (Throat Wind). If not treated promptly, danger will appear immediately.
Ming Dan (Life-Saving Pill) treats Xiao'er (Pediatric) Feng Xian (Wind-Phlegm) flooding the Ge (Diaphragm). Its action is to promote Phlegm discharge and expel Wind.
Qing Meng Shi (Fluorite) is ground into powder. Honey pills are prepared, sized like mung beans. Take seven or eight pills each time, washed down with Bo He Tang (Mint Decoction).
A child presented with wind-phlegm causing foaming at the mouth, asthmatic cough, abdominal distension, and loss of appetite.
Xiao'er (Pediatric) Fei Zhang (Lung Distension) with asthmatic cough is often viewed by people as Feng Hou (Wind Throat). Da Huang (Rhubarb Rhizome), Bing Lang (Areca Seed), and Er Qian Niu (Morning Glory Seed) are used, along with Ren Shen (Ginseng Root) in equal proportions. The five ingredients are ground into fine powder. Mix with honey water to a suitable consistency. Apply an amount equivalent to "one character" (approx. 0.5-1g) to the throat. Shen Zhen Fa Jiu (Divine Needle Moxibustion) is not required.
The symptoms described above include Fei Zhang (Lung Distension), asthmatic fullness, high chest Qi with rapid breathing, flaring of the two costal regions leaving depressions, dilation of the two nasal apertures, mental confusion, cough with thirst, hoarse voice unable to speak, and obstruction by phlegm-saliva. Colloquially called Ma Pi Feng (Horse Spleen Wind). If not treated urgently, death may occur within a day or night.
Ding Chuan Tang (Asthma-Calming Decoction) treats Chuan Qi Ji (rapid asthmatic breathing).
Ma Huang (Ephedrae Herba) (6 fen) Xing Ren (Prunus Armeniaca Seed) (1 qian) Ban Xia (Pinelliae Tuber) (6 fen, soaked seven times in Gan Cao water) Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix) (3 fen, lightly stir-fried) Su Zi (Perillae Fructus) (1 qian)
Kuan Dong Hua (Farflos) (1 qian) Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (2 fen) Bai Guo (Ginkgo Semen) (5 pieces, shell removed, crushed, stir-fried until yellow) Sang Bai Pi (Mori Cortex) (5 fen, honey-fried)
Cut the herbs. Decoct in water. Take warm. Do not use Sheng Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens).
One discussion addresses Xiao'er (Pediatric) Pi Wei Xu Han (Spleen-Stomach Deficiency-Cold), chronic cough that does not cease, fullness and stuffiness in the throat and diaphragm, cough with phlegm-saliva, vomiting and nausea, abdominal distension, and fatigue/pain in the waist and back. This belongs to Xu Lao Leng Sou (Deficiency-Wasting Cold Cough). For cases where various medicines are ineffective, take:
Ren Shen Kuan Dong Hua Gao (Ginseng and Farflos Paste)
Ren Shen (Ginseng Root) (8 qian) Zi Wan (Asteris Radix) (1 qian) Kuan Dong Hua (Farflos) (stem removed, 8 qian) Sang Bai Pi (Mori Cortex) (stir-fried, 1 liang) Bei Mu (Fritillariae Bulbus) (2.5 qian) Jie Geng (Platycodonis Radix)
(stir-fried, 2.5 qian) Zi Su (Perillae Folium) (5 qian) Bing Lang (Areca Seed) (5 qian) Mu Xiang (Aucklandiae Radix) (5 qian) Xing Ren (Prunus Armeniaca Seed) (skin removed, stir-fried, 8 qian) Wu Wei Zi (Schisandrae Chinensis Fructus) (8 qian) Ma Dou Ling (Aristolochiae Manshuriensis Caulis) (2.5 qian)
Grind all into powder. Prepare honey pills, sized like longan seeds. Take one pill per dose, dissolved and taken with Jiang Tang (Ginger Decoction).
One discussion presents a miraculous formula for Xiao'er (Pediatric) throat obstruction by phlegm causing severe asthma. Use Ba Dou (Crotonis Fructus), pounded into a paste to form one pill. Wrap in cotton. Insert into the left nostril for males, right nostril for females. The phlegm will immediately descend.
