The pulse at the Cun Kou (radial artery) is rapid and full, indicating Fei Yong (Lung Abscess). If the pulse is short and choppy, the disease will heal spontaneously. If the pulse is floating and large, it is difficult to treat.
Fei Yong (Lung Abscess) arises from cold and heat pathogens invading the interior of the Lung, causing Qi stagnation and accumulation. This is generally due to improper regulation, labor injury damaging Qi and Blood, allowing Wind-Cold pathogens to take advantage of the deficiency. Cold transforms into Heat, and Wind also generates Heat; pathogenic factors accumulate and do not disperse, eventually forming a Lung Abscess. Symptoms include coughing, nasal discharge (brain leakage), dull pain in the right hypochondrium, swelling and fullness in both legs, dry throat and mouth, mental restlessness with excessive thirst, and frequent expectoration of yellow saliva with a foul, fishy odor, resembling glutinous rice porridge. This condition is difficult to treat. If there is fever accompanied by vomiting, one should not forcibly stop the vomiting; once the pus is exhausted, the patient will heal spontaneously. If the vomitus consists of yellow, foul-smelling pus or pus mixed with pinkish blood, it indicates Fei Wei (Lung Flaccidity). Generally, if the pulse is fine and deep, it indicates interior deficiency and transformation of symptoms.
One discussion concerns coughing up pus and blood with an unbearable foul odor, which belongs to Fei Yong (Lung Abscess).
Formula: Huangqi (Astragali Radix, stir-fried with honey), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Jinyinhua (Lonicerae Japonicae Flos), Rendongteng (Lonicerae Japonicae Caulis), Jinfeicao (Bellis Perennis Herba), Niuxi (Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix), Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix) (all in equal parts).
Preparation: Take one duck, strangle it, cut it open, and place the aforementioned seven herbs inside the duck's cavity. Boil with high-quality wine until the wine is completely consumed. Eat the duck. Dry the herbal dregs, grind them into powder, and administer with wine. After taking this, consume Jing Nong Tang (Pure Pus-Removing Decoction).
Jing Nong Tang (Pure Pus-Removing Decoction): This decoction should be taken after eating the duck.
Composition: Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) four liang, cut into large pieces, decocted in water, and taken in one dose. If the patient cannot swallow, induce vomiting.
Hua Tan Zhi Ke Wan (Phlegm-Resolving and Cough-Stopping Pill):
Composition: Baifan (Alumen, calcined until dry) two liang, Baicaoshuang (Fuliginis Pulvis) one liang.
Preparation: Grind these two ingredients into powder, form pills using clear water. Take 30–50 pills per dose, delivered with a decoction of Renshen (Ginseng Radix) and Wuweizi (Schisandrae Chinensis Fructus), each three qian. Use over a three-day period.
Another discussion on treating Lung Deficiency: Use one white duck, remove the internal organs, place Yiren (Coicis Semen) and Xingren (Armeniacae Semen Amarum), each one liang, into the duck's abdomen. Steam thoroughly over rice. Remove the herbs and eat only the duck meat. This greatly tonifies the Lung.
Another discussion on Lung Abscess: Have the patient chew one soybean. If the patient does not perceive the taste of the bean, it indicates Lung Abscess.
Another discussion on Lung Abscess: Slightly stir-fry Yiyiren (Coicis Semen), grind into powder, and take with Mijiu Yin (Glutinous Rice Beverage). It can also be cooked in congee or decocted in water. Administration leads to the discharge of pus and blood, bringing relief.
Baofei Dan (Lung-Protecting Pill) (See formula for Ying Liu / Goiter).
In all cases of treating Lung Abscess, this medicine must be administered intermittently to protect the diaphragmatic membrane, preventing perforation into the Heart and Lung. This is most appropriate. Specifically, Fanla Wan (Alum-Wax Pill) should be taken with honey-water.
