Arm pain is caused by the invasion of Wind-Cold-Dampness pathogens. In some cases, when sleeping, the hand is exposed outside the blanket and attacked by Cold pathogens, leading to arm pain. Additionally, nursing mothers may suffer from arm pain due to Wind-Cold invasion after using their arms as pillows for their infants. All such cases should be treated according to the following formulas based on specific symptoms.
One theory states that arm pain can arise from Damp-Phlegm moving horizontally through the meridians.
**E Zhu Tang (Two Atractylodes Decoction)**
* *Cangzhu* (Rhizoma Atractylodis Chinensis) (soaked in rice washing water, 1.5 qian)
* *Baizhu* (Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae) (remove rhizome base)
* *Nanxing* (Rhizoma Arisaematis Cum Bile)
* *Chenpi* (Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae)
* *Baifuling* (Poria) (remove bark)
* *Xiangfu* (Rhizoma Cyperi)
* *Jiu Qin* (Radix Scutellariae Preparated with Wine)
* *Qianghuo* (Rhizoma et Radix Notopterygii)
* *Weilingxian* (Herba Saposhnikoviae)
* *Banxia* (Rhizoma Pinelliae Preparatum)
* *Gancao* (Radix Glycyrrhizae Preparata) (each 1 qian)
Crush these herbs into one dose. Add fresh ginger (*Shengjiang*), decoct with water, and take orally.
Another theory states that arm pain caused by Cold is treated with **Wu Ji San (Five Accumulations Powder)**. (See formula under "Zhong Han" / Middle Cold).
Another theory states that arm pain caused by Qi stagnation is treated with **Wu Yao Shun Qi San (Lindera Regulating Qi Powder)**. (See formula under "Zhong Feng" / Stroke).
Another theory states that arm pain caused by Dampness is treated with:
**Juan Bi Tang (Expelling Bi Syndrome Decoction)**
* *Danggui* (Radix Angelicae Sinensis)
* *Chishao* (Radix Paeoniae Rubra)
* *Huangqi* (Radix Astragali Membranacei)
* *Qianghuo* (Rhizoma et Radix Notopterygii)
* *Jianghuang* (Rhizoma Curcumae Longae)
* *Fangfeng* (Radix Saposhnikoviae)
* *Zhi Gancao* (Radix Glycyrrhizae Preparata) (all in equal parts)
Crush these herbs. Add five slices of fresh ginger, decoct, and take orally.
Another theory addresses cold pain in the arms where lifting is difficult, or pain occurs in one or both arms.
**Wu Ji Jia Jiao San (Five Accumulations Combined Powder)** (Effective prescription transmitted by Magistrate □): Combine **Wu Ji San** with **Renshen Bai Du San (Ginseng Detoxifying Powder)**. Add *Mugua* (Fructus Chaenomelis), ginger, and jujube, decoct, and take orally. If ineffective, add *Niuxi* (Radix Achyranthis Bidentatae). Alternatively, take **Wu Yao Shun Qi San** with added *Qianghuo* and *Mugua*.
Another theory states that softness and weakness in the arms, inability to bear weight, results from deficiency of Qi in the Liver Meridian. Wind pathogens lodge between Ying (Nutritive) and Wei (Defensive) levels, preventing blood and Qi from nourishing the four limbs adequately. Thus, this symptom arises. The Liver governs the neck, back, and arms; the Kidneys govern the waist, hips, and knees. If these two zang organs are deficient, disease manifests in their respective domains. This case involves deficiency of Liver Qi, so one should tonify the Liver and Kidneys, primarily using **Liu Wei Wan (Six-Ingredient Pill with Rehmannia)**.
A man over sixty years old, who habitually drank alcohol, suffered from pain in both arms. He strictly took medicines for dispelling Wind and treating Bi syndrome, but his numbness worsened, accompanied by fever, body weakness, surging phlegm, spasm and pain in the legs and knees, deviation of the mouth and slurred speech, dizziness and heaviness of the head and eyes, drooling from the corner of the mouth, a sensation of insects crawling on the body, and white scales appearing upon scratching. He then believed my diagnosis and asked, "Why?" I said: "Arm numbness and body weakness indicate Spleen dysfunction; spontaneous flow of phlegm and saliva indicates the Spleen's failure to control retention; mouth deviation and slurred speech indicate injury to Spleen Qi; dizziness and heaviness indicate the Spleen's failure to raise clear Yang; itching with white scales indicates the Spleen's failure to nourish the surface." Consequently, I prescribed **Bu Zhong Yi Qi Tang (Tonify the Middle and Augment the Qi Decoction)** with added *Shenqu* (Massa Medicata Fermentata), *Banxia*, and *Fuling*. After more than thirty doses, all symptoms subsided. Subsequently, I prepared a paste from *Renshen* (Radix Ginseng) and *Baizhu* to treat him, resulting in a cure.
