Among the twenty-four syndromes of Startling Wind, Acute and Chronic Startling are prioritized. Acute Startling belongs to Yang, all caused by heat accumulation and fright in the Heart Meridian, wind generation and convulsions in the Liver Meridian, conflict between wind and fire, chaotic blood and qi, excessive phlegm and saliva, stagnation of hundred vessels, blocked orifices. Internally unable to ascend and descend, externally unable to vent, leading to gnashing teeth, biting breast, red cheeks and lips, sweat on nose and forehead, rapid breathing and wheezing, sudden suffocation, straight upward gaze, tight jaw, inability to open mouth, limb convulsions. This is due to extreme heat. Chronic Startling belongs to Yin, all resulting from post-major illness or post-vomiting/diarrhea, dull eyes and confused spirit, asymmetric limb movement, drooling, slight body warmth, upward gaze, clenched fists with convulsions. If mouth and nose breath is cold and fontanelle is sunken, this is extreme deficiency. Pulse is deep and forceless, eyes open when sleeping, this is depletion of true yang and dominance of yin evil, extreme deficiency-cold. Acute Startling is excess-heat, suitable for cooling; Chronic Startling is deficiency-cold, suitable for warming and tonifying. Treat according to the syndrome, this is accurate.
