Explanation: Wind is the Qi of the four seasons and five phases, distributed among the eight directions, following the twelve months, and completing a cycle of three hundred and sixty days. When coming from its native direction according to the season, it is called "regular wind" (Zheng Feng). In heaven and earth, it manifests as the five phases; in humans, it corresponds to the Qi of the five zang organs. It is the normal climate that facilitates the growth of all things, not a toxic or pestilential Qi. If humans are exposed to it excessively and their bodies cannot withstand it, illness occurs. Even if ill, there are cases of spontaneous recovery; with treatment, healing is easier. Wind that does not arrive at the proper time is "toxic wind" (Du Feng) or pathogenic wind. Without treatment, it will not heal spontaneously. The symptoms are listed below:
In spring, Jia-Yi Wood, the clear wind of the east, injuring the person results in Liver Wind, entering the head, neck, and Liver Shu points. Symptoms include excessive sweating, aversion to wind, emotional volatility (anger and joy), pain in both hypochondria, internal blood stasis, difficulty eating, intermittent swelling of joints, bluish complexion, diarrhea, dry throat, nasal congestion, and epistaxis.
In summer, Bing-Ding Fire, the hot wind of the south, injuring the person results in Heart Wind, entering the chest, hypochondria, viscera, and Heart Shu points. Symptoms include excessive sweating, aversion to wind, emaciation, propensity to sadness, red complexion, and watery diarrhea with undigested food.
In mid-summer, Wu-Ji Earth, sharing the hot wind of the south, injuring the person results in Spleen Wind, entering the back, spine, and Spleen Shu points. Symptoms include excessive sweating, aversion to wind, muscle pain, bodily lethargy, desire to remain inactive, anorexia, and yellowish complexion. Depending on the deficiency or excess of the individual: If Yang Qi is excessive and Yin Qi insufficient, heat generates internally and externally, causing hunger when located in the middle jiao. If Yang Qi is insufficient and Yin Qi excessive, cold arises from within, causing borborygmus and pain.
In autumn, Geng-Xin Metal, the cool wind of the west, injuring the person results in Lung Wind, entering the shoulders, back, and Lung Shu points. Symptoms include excessive sweating, aversion to wind, alternating chills and fever, coughing with shoulder and back movement, pale complexion, malaria-like symptoms that improve during the day and worsen at night.
In winter, Ren-Gui Water, the cold wind of the north, injuring the person results in Kidney Wind, entering the waist, thighs, limbs, and Kidney Shu points. Symptoms include excessive sweating, aversion to wind, pain in the lumbar spine, scapula, back, neck, and occiput, inability to stand for long periods, difficult and curved urination, Yin bi (obstruction/pain in the genital region), inability to urinate even upon pressure, abdominal distension, puffy and lustrous facial edema, swelling, and dizziness.
These winds of regular qi in the four seasons, if overexposed by healthy individuals, produce the aforementioned symptom complexes.
General names of winds in the four seasons: Ninety days of spring are Clear Wind; ninety days of summer are Hot Wind; ninety days of autumn are Cool Wind; ninety days of winter are Cold Wind. Their Qi distributes through the eight directions, each having different names. Taiyi Shen resides in its respective direction for forty-five days according to the solar terms, and wind and clouds respond accordingly. The names of these winds are listed below:
Qi of Gen (Northeast), prosperous at Start of Spring, called Tiao Feng, also known as Xiong Feng (Ominous Wind), prosperous for forty-five days.
Qi of Zhen (East), prosperous at Spring Equinox, called Ming Shu Feng, also known as Ying Er Feng (Infant Wind), prosperous for forty-five days.
Qi of Xun (Southeast), prosperous at Start of Summer, called Qing Ming Feng, also known as Ruo Feng (Weak Wind), prosperous for forty-five days.
Qi of Li (South), prosperous at Summer Solstice, called Jing Feng, also known as Da Ruo Feng (Great Weak Wind), prosperous for twenty-seven days, combining with mid-summer.
Central Qi of mid-summer governs the establishment of the eight directional Qi. Wu-Ji Earth is prosperous for eighteen days, combining with Summer Solstice to total forty-five days; the wind name is the same.
Qi of Kun (Southwest), prosperous at Start of Autumn, called Liang Feng, also known as Mou Feng (Strategizing Wind), prosperous for forty-five days.
Qi of Dui (West), prosperous at Autumn Equinox, called Chang He Feng, also known as Gang Feng (Rigid Wind), prosperous for forty-five days.
Qi of Qian (Northwest), prosperous at Start of Winter, called Bu Zhou Zhi Feng, also known as Zhe Feng (Breaking Wind), prosperous for forty-five days.
Qi of Kan (North), prosperous at Winter Solstice, called Guang Mo Feng, also known as Da Gang Feng (Great Rigid Wind), prosperous for forty-five days.
The above eight winds, coming from their native directions, primarily nourish all things, resulting in less death and disease among the people.
If the winds of the eight directions do not come from their native direction but blow from the opposite direction behind, they are called "Empty Evil" (Xu Xie). They harm all things, leading to increased death and disease among the people. Thus, sages teach avoiding evil as one avoids arrows. Evil refers to wind. The reason for varying lifespans and frequent illness today is ignorance of avoiding evil. The pathological manifestations are as follows:
Xiong Feng's Qi lodges internally in the Large Intestine and externally in the hypochondrium, under the armpit bones, and in the joints of the limbs. The original text omits its symptoms, which are now lost.
Ying Er Feng causes tendons to become loose and damp. Its Qi lodges internally in the Liver and externally in the tendons.
Ruo Feng causes heaviness of the body. Its Qi lodges internally in the Stomach and externally in the flesh.
Da Ruo Feng causes fever. Its Qi lodges internally in the Heart and externally in the vessels.
Mou Feng causes weakness and flaccidity of the four limbs. Its Qi lodges internally in the Spleen and externally in the muscles.
Gang Feng causes dryness, characterized by emaciation and withered skin. Its Qi lodges internally in the Lungs and externally in the skin.
Zhe Feng varies by individual: when pulses cease, diarrhea occurs; when pulses are blocked, stagnation occurs. It predisposes to sudden death. Its Qi lodges internally in the Small Intestine and externally in the Right Hand Taiyang channel.
Da Gang Feng causes coldness, specifically cold disorders where self-warming is impossible. Its Qi lodges internally in the Kidneys and externally in the bones, spinal muscles, and tendons.
The above eight winds, blowing from the opposite direction, cause such diseases.
Wind taken immediately after eating is called Wei Feng (Stomach Wind). Symptoms include aversion to wind, excessive sweating on the neck, blockage below the diaphragm, inability to eat or drink, abdominal distension, emaciation of the body, and abdominal enlargement, caused by improper clothing.
Wind taken after rising from drunkenness is called Lou Feng (Leaking Wind). Symptoms include aversion to wind, excessive sweating, shortness of breath, dry mouth and thirst, sensation of burning heat when near clothing, profuse sweating like rain during meals, joint laxity, and reluctance to care for oneself.
Wind taken immediately after bathing is called Shou Feng (Head Wind). Symptoms include aversion to wind, excessive sweating on the face, and headache.
Wind taken immediately after sexual intercourse is called Xie Feng (Escaping Wind). Symptoms include aversion to wind and sweat soaking the clothes.
Lao Feng (Labor Wind) disease favors the Lungs, causing nuchal rigidity, aversion to wind, chills, protruding eyes, and discharge of saliva and mucus. Observing within three to five days, lack of mental clarity indicates this disease. After seven to eight days, small amounts of clear-yellow purulent sputum, size of a bullet, discharged from the mouth and nose, indicate improvement. If not discharged, it injures the Lungs.
The Qi of wind prefers movement and frequent change. Within the human skin and muscles, if it cannot vent internally or dissipate externally, its nature changes according to the body's state of activity or rest. The symptoms are as follows:
Wind encountering cold leads to inability to eat; encountering heat leads to muscle wasting and alternating chills and fever.
Wind encountering Yang excess leads to anhidrosis; encountering Yin excess leads to spontaneous sweating.
In obese persons with wind, thick muscles hinder venting, predisposing to Heat Zhong syndrome and jaundice.
In thin persons with wind, thin muscles allow it to move outward easily, causing internal cold and tearing.
Wind encountering Excess patterns closes the interstices (Cou Li), trapping the wind internally, causing heat and oppression. If hot food is consumed, sweat attempts to flow, interstices open, and wind exits, feeling like needle pricks in the muscles. Walking and exertion attempting to induce sweat present similarly.
Wind encountering Deficiency patterns opens the interstices, allowing wind to exit externally, feeling chilly like cold, with a sensation of water dripping on the body, sometimes like air blowing through a bamboo tube.
Formula for treating facial deviation (mouth and eyes pulling to one side).
Apply fresh softshell turtle blood to the affected area. Use a mulberry hook to pull the corner of the mouth and hang it on the ear. Reapply when the blood dries. Administer with white wine to enhance the effect of the blood.
Twitching of the eye orbit, twitching of the lips, and facial deviation are all due to wind entering the vessels. Immediately administer Xiao Xuming Tang (Minor Continuation of Life Decoction) and apply Shenming Gao (Divine Brightness Ointment).
