Huangdi asked Jinyezi: "When a disease caused by fright presents with symptoms resembling Ben Tun (Rushing Pig), what is the pathology?" Jinyezi replied: "Ben Tun caused by fright involves palpitations in the heart, as if startled by a chariot canopy or terrified by people. The five Zang organs become unstable; food and drink are vomited immediately upon ingestion. There is fullness of Qi in the chest, mania and dementia with an urge to run, muttering while eyes are closed, and delirious speech when eyes are open. Sometimes the eyes and face are widened, refusing interaction. Physicians do not know how to treat it; the patient cries out feeling offended or indebted. Ben Tun Tang (Pursuing Pig Decoction) is the primary treatment." Huangdi said: "Excellent."
Huangdi asked Jinyezi: "How can one distinguish Ben Tun caused by worry and rumination from that caused by fright?" Jinyezi replied: "Ben Tun caused by worry and rumination involves Qi fullness supporting the heart region, irritability and confusion below the heart, aversion to hearing human voices, periodic attacks where the condition fluctuates between improvement and exacerbation, shallow breathing, cold extremities, internal heat and knotted pain, nausea with an urge to vomit. Physicians do not know how to treat it; the patient cries out feeling touched or offended. Ben Tun Tang is the primary treatment." Huangdi said: "Excellent."
The Master said: "Diseases resembling Ben Tun involve Qi rising from the lower abdomen and rushing up to the throat. During attacks, the patient feels as if dying, but recovers afterward. These are all caused by fright and terror, resulting from pus accumulation in the Kidney region."
The Master said: "Among diseases, there are Ben Tun, vomiting of pus, fright/terror, and Fire Evil. These four categories of disease all originate from fright. Those caused by Fire Evil are treated with Guizhi Jia Longgu Muli Tang (Cinnamon Twig Decoction plus Dragon Bone and Oyster Shell). If the onset follows sudden loss of wealth or persecution by officials due to fright, the treatment uses Owl heads and Lead Carbonate (Qian Dan), along with other unspecified ingredients. Regarding Ben Tun, it refers to the patient's Qi rebelling with panting and forcing upward, resembling the running of a pig. Ben Tun Tang is the primary treatment."
For treating sudden trauma, where eating causes pain on one side of the chest accompanied by trembling, and drinking water or broth produces similar effects, ask about the condition corresponding to these symptoms and urgently prepare this prescription.
Fresh Plum Root (Li Gen) (one jin, finely chopped), Ophiopogon Tuber (Mendong) (one sheng, core removed), Ginseng Root (Renshen) (two liang), Cinnamon Heart (Guixin) (two liang), Licorice Root (Gancao) (two liang, honey-fried).
Crush the above five herbs, add ten dou of water, decoct to obtain three sheng, divide into three doses. Avoid Seaweed (Haizao), Chinese Cabbage (Songcai), and raw Scallion (Shengcong).
Ben Tun Tang treats deficiency exhaustion damaging the Qi of the five Zang organs, allowing wandering Qi to return upward. When moving upward, it resembles a group of pigs chasing each other restlessly. Attacks occur suddenly like waking from a frightened dream. Essence and light are exhausted without luster, impotence occurs, pulling pain arises in the lower abdomen, intermittent fever with redness, mood swings, deafness, and dull vision are present. This formula addresses these conditions.
Kudzu Root (Gegen) (eight liang, dried), Fresh Plum Root (Li Gen) (one sheng, sliced), Ginseng Root (Renshen) (three liang), Pinellia Tuber (Banxia) (one sheng, washed), Peony Root (Shaoyao) (three liang), Angelica Root (Danggui) (two liang), Cinnamon Heart (Guixin) (five liang), Fresh Ginger (Shengjiang) (two slices), Licorice Root (Gancao) (two liang, honey-fried).
Cut the above nine herbs, add two dou of water, decoct to obtain five sheng. Take eight he warm, three times daily. If ineffective, slightly increase to one sheng, three times daily. Avoid mutton, maltose (Yi), raw scallion, seaweed, and Chinese cabbage.
The state described as 'resembling Ben Tun' refers to the patient's Qi rushing upward like a running pig, characterized by panting and rebellious Qi. The term 'Ben Zhu' (Running Pig) in the formula name implies using male pigs fighting; they are driven to run, then slaughtered to use their blood and viscera in compounding the medicine. This is Gegen Ben Tun Tang (Kudzu Root Pursuing Pig Decoction).
Kudzu Root (Gegen) (eight liang, dried), Fresh Plum Root (Li Gen) (one sheng, peeled), Ginseng Root (Renshen) (three liang), Atractylodes Rhizome (Bai Zhu) (two liang), Pinellia Tuber (Banxia) (one sheng, washed and fried), Peony Root (Shaoyao) (three liang), Angelica Root (Danggui) (two liang), Cinnamon Bark (Guirou) (five liang), Fresh Ginger (Shengjiang) (one jin), Licorice Root (Gancao) (two liang).
Ten items in total. Add two dou of pig juice, decoct to obtain five sheng. Take eight he warm, three times daily.
Muli Ben Tun Tang (Oyster Shell Pursuing Pig Decoction) treats Ben Tun where Qi rushes from the lower abdomen to the chest, accompanied by cold extremities.
Oyster Shell (Muli) (three liang, calcined), Cinnamon Heart (Guixin) (eight liang), White Bark of Plum Root (Ligen Baipi) (one jin, sliced), Licorice Root (Gancao) (three liang, honey-fried).
Cut the above four herbs, add one dou seven sheng of water. First decoct the plum root bark until seven sheng remain, remove dregs, add remaining herbs, and decoct again to obtain three sheng. Divide into doses of five he, taken three times during the day and twice at night. Avoid raw scallion, seaweed, and Chinese cabbage.
For treating cold extremities, chest fullness, shortness of breath, rising from the left and right of the navel, and oppression/dizziness, use Ben Tun Tang.
Licorice Root (Gancao) (four liang, honey-fried), White Bark of Plum Root (Ligen Baipi) (one jin, sliced), Kudzu Root (Gegen) (one jin), Scutellaria Root (Huangqin) (three liang), Cinnamon Heart (Guixin) (two liang), Trichosanthes Fruit (Gualou) (two liang), Ginseng Root (Renshen) (two liang), Szechuan Lovage Root (Chuanxiong) (one liang).
Cut the above eight herbs, add one dou five sheng of water, decoct to obtain five sheng, remove dregs. Take one sheng warm, three times during the day and twice at night. Avoid seaweed, Chinese cabbage, and raw scallion.
Another formula, attributed to Tongjun.
Bat skin from hatching (Fuchi), Ash from Pear Wood (Limu Hui), Ephedra Stem (Mahuang, nodes removed), Asterae Radix (Ziwan) (equal parts).
Pulverize the above four herbs and sieve. Form into pills or powders. Take ten pills with wine as appropriate, size of wattle seeds; for powder, take one fangcun bi. Treats chronic qi knotting in the throat with coughing and rebellion lasting thirty years, providing immediate relief. It may also be decocted in water into a soup, divided according to judgment.
