Critics say: Classics are the tools for our path of learning; formulas and treatises are the tools for the path of medicine. This is true. However, if classics do not exist, scholars have no standard for judgment, how can they know the origin of the Way? If formulas and treatises are not clear, physicians have no basis for examination, how can they distinguish between refined and crude medical skills? If there were figures like Lu Yi, Bian Que, or Hua Tuo in the world, they would understand prescriptions intuitively and communicate with the divine, what need would they have for formulas and treatises? Alas, such talents as Lu, Bian, and Hua Tuo do not appear every generation, and those who seek to be neither pedantic nor rigid, neither arrogant nor false, are rare. Instead of leaving their lives in the hands of mediocre physicians, why do not scholars explore the intentions of the ancients through formulas and treatises to preserve health and benefit the world? Formulas and treatises in the world are like grain for daily use; who among the gentleman would feel ashamed to speak of them?
When Lord Liu of Jieyang served as commander of Jingxiang, he ordered the compilation of ancient and modern medical texts regarding pediatric prescriptions into a single book, totaling forty volumes, titled *Youyou Xinshu* (New Book for Young Children). Upon completion of thirty-eight volumes, he fell ill and passed away.
Lou Gong, the Transport Commissioner from Siming, succeeded him in administration, saying, "The good work of the predecessor must be completed." He therefore ordered the matter to be expedited. The final two volumes were combined into one, and a volume collecting ancient and modern treatises on seeking offspring was compiled and placed at the beginning of the book. After one month, the book was finished. Ah! It can be said to be perfect. Cai Ru once heard the Master say: "Parents give birth to children; nothing is greater than continuing the lineage." The way of succession is the head of human relations. In the *Classic of Poetry* (Shijing), consisting of 306 poems, the Sage selected relevant ones. *Guan Ju* praises women's joy in having children; *Zhong Si* praises numerous descendants; *Si Gan* praises the birth of a son; *Sheng Min* praises the creation of humankind. Reading these poems makes one reflect deeply. Perhaps this is why the ancients recorded theories on seeking offspring in medical books. Now, Lord Liu has gathered various schools of thought and placed them before the formulas, allowing the book to circulate and be treasured by households. If people gain true understanding, it will align with the intent of the Master and the poets. I also once said: Formerly, Song Jugong, due to heavy rain causing water to invade ant hills, broke bamboo to make bridges for the ants to cross. Later, a monk told him, "Your demeanor has changed instantly, as if you had saved millions of lives." Making a bridge out of bamboo was a trivial act, what benefit could it bring to the tiny creatures, yet the hidden merit was so great. How much more so is the transmission of this book, benefiting the world and future generations? Then Lord Liu's fortune and glory are surely guaranteed by Heaven, just as holding the left half of a tally guarantees payment.
In the eleventh month of the year Dunzang (Shanyou era, 1140 AD), Shi Cai Ru, Left Di Gong Lang and newly appointed Household Administrator of Jiangling Prefecture, respectfully wrote the preface.
In the autumn of the Gengwu year, Liu Fangming, Commander of Tanzhou, died of illness. I assumed command and asked the people of the prefecture: "Lord Liu governed Tanzhou for a long time, and everything he initiated was done without negligence. Were there any projects started but left unfinished due to occasional leisure?" Thus, *Youyou Xinshu* was presented to me. Upon inspection, I found that books from ancient and modern medical experts concerning infants and young children, including both formulas and treatises, were comprehensively collected, categorized, and organized. It was like accessing the entire world, where all goods are present; or opening a treasury, where gems shine brightly. Whatever was needed could be fully satisfied. Ah! In the past, enthusiasts who obtained a famous prescription would hide it carefully in a box, vowing even between father and son not to transmit it. Yet Lord Liu was able to thoroughly investigate and broadly collect, compiling them into a complete book. By having it printed and circulated, sharing it as a treasure with the world, his intention was indeed benevolent! I therefore ordered the craftsmen to hasten its completion and collected old prescriptions suitable for seeking offspring, placing them on the left as the first section.
On the sixteenth day of the eleventh month, Lou Yue, Right Chaosan Dafu, Acting Transport Judge of Jingxi South Road and Acting Military and Civil Governor of Tanzhou, respectfully wrote the postscript.
