*Ge Shi's Elbow Manual* records: After taking licorice to induce vomiting of foul fluids, administer Cinnabar Honey (Zhumi) subsequently; its primary function is to calm and stabilize the soul and spirit. Refine genuine cinnabar (Zhu Sha) into particles the size of soybeans, mix with honey measured by a clam shell, and administer approximately one bean-sized dose daily for three consecutive days; this is highly suitable for infants.
*Qian Jin Fang* (The method is the same as Ge Shi's, but excessive dosage causes illness. Since Ge Shi did not mention this, it is recorded here.) When administering Cinnabar Honey to a newborn on the third day, it should not be excessive. Excessive intake may cause coldness in the spleen and stomach, abdominal distension, preference for cool environments, sudden changes in epilepsy with rapid breathing, and death due to trismus and spasms. The method for administering Cinnabar Honey to newborns is the same as in *Ge Shi's Elbow Manual*. Wrap cotton around the tip of a chopstick, dip it into the medicine, and let the infant suckle. Limit to three dips. Allow the infant to finish approximately one bean-sized dose on the first day; if administered over three days, use a total of three bean-sized doses. Do not exceed this amount, as excess will harm the infant.
Yao Hezhong states: (Yao Hezhong does not advocate continuous administration for three days; instead, he recommends administration starting from the sixth day after birth, claiming it warms the intestines and stomach. In contrast, *Qian Jin Fang* states that excess causes coldness in the spleen and stomach.) On the sixth day after birth, administer to warm the intestines and stomach and strengthen blood and qi. Take refined cinnabar (Zhu Sha) roughly the size of a large soybean, grind it finely, mix with honey the size of a jujube cooked until ready, dip with cotton, and let the infant suckle, completing the dose within one day.
*Ge Shi's Elbow Manual* records: After administering Cinnabar Honey, administer Realgar and Orpiment mixture (Niuhuang); this benefits the liver and gallbladder, clears heat, stabilizes fright, and dispels evil qi. The dosage should be equivalent to that of Cinnabar Honey.
*Qian Jin Fang* records: After finishing Cinnabar Honey, administering Niuhuang not only benefits the liver and gallbladder, clears heat, stabilizes the spirit, stops fright, and dispels evil qi, but also treats various diseases in infants.
Zhang Huan's Niuhuang Method:
Take a piece of genuine Niuhuang (Calculus Bovis), mix well with refined honey to form a paste. Administer one bean-sized dose per serving, dissolve in breast milk, and drip into the mouth occasionally. If the color and texture are not authentic, do not administer excessively. It is suitable for infants with fetal heat or yellowish body complexion to take more.
Zhang Huan states: On the first day after birth, immediately after cutting the umbilical cord and wrapping the infant, observe the infant's complexion and form. If the face is ruddy and red, and the cry is loud and clear, it is appropriate to use half a qian of Mercury Powder (Gongfen), allowing the infant to suckle slowly. It is auspicious if meconium is discharged after a while.
*Tong Ying Bao Jian* records: Whenever an infant is just born, quickly remove foul matter from the mouth, then apply Silver Powder (Yinfen) to the upper and lower lips and both cheeks. Only then can Cinnabar Honey or breast milk be administered, ensuring all accumulated matter in the abdomen is expelled, so that the child grows easily and suffers fewer illnesses.
