The faintness of the fingerprint is also alarming; it generally indicates a weak congenital constitution. The Spleen and Stomach are inherently deficient, with weak Middle Qi (Central Qi); one must strictly guard against using attacking/draining methods that could damage the infant.
(If a child has inherited Yang deficiency, presenting with pale skin and pale lips and tongue, the fingerprint will be faint in all four seasons. Even if ill, it will only appear as faint red, faint green, or faint purple. Generally, faint red indicates Deficiency-Cold, faint green indicates Deficiency-Wind, and faint purple indicates Deficiency-Heat. Such children have an unstable root and weak Middle Qi. Regardless of whether the disease is new or chronic, it always falls under Deficiency patterns. One dare not lightly use any attacking/draining methods. If mistakenly prescribed harsh draining herbs, the consequences are irreversible, and regret would come too late.)
What is the reason for the rough and stagnant appearance at the Guan position? It is due to pathogenic factors obstructing the Yin, causing Ying (Nutritive) and Wei (Defensive) Qi to stagnate. Food retention in the Middle Jiao (Middle Burner) and blazing Wind-Heat: if one does not employ pushing and purging methods, what else can be sought for cure?
(Pathogenic factors obstruct and depress Ying and Wei Qi, causing sluggish circulation and impaired ascending/descending movements. Thus, when pushing the fingerprint, it feels rough, lacking vitality and smoothness. This results from food retention clashing with Wind-Heat, constituting an Excess pattern. Urgent pushing and purging are required to remove the accumulation, after which recovery will be easy. If the three sections of the finger show pure black color and do not move upon pushing, it is a death sign and incurable.)
When abdominal pain occurs, if the fingerprint extends into the center of the palm, inward curvature indicates sequential invasion by Cold and Wind. Outward curvature indicates Phlegm, Food retention, and Heat. A shape resembling the character "Water" indicates injury to the Yin of both the Spleen and Lungs.
(The palm center is governed by the Pericardium. Fingerprint entering the palm signifies pathogenic invasion of the five internal organs, caused by Cold in the Middle Qi, thus leading to abdominal pain. Regarding the bow-like curvature: if the two ends of the fingerprint curve toward the middle finger, it is "inward," representing a favorable syndrome (Shun Zheng), caused by external contraction of Cold and Wind, which is relatively easy to treat. If the fingerprint curves toward the thumb, it is "outward," representing an unfavorable syndrome (Ni Zheng), caused by internal injury from diet, which is slightly more difficult to treat. A shape like the character "Water" indicates insufficiency of the Spleen and Lungs, food blocking the Taiyin meridian, weak Middle Qi, and the Spleen's failure to transform and transport. One might ask: Since the fingerprint is merely a single line, how can it form the shape of the character "Water"? I reply: Have you not observed the pulse at Taoyuan (LU9)? It is also a single line, yet why do the Yang Linking Vessel, Yin Linking Vessel, Yang Heel Vessel, and Yin Heel Vessel all pulse left and right like stones striking rock, forming a small character shape? Pulses have left and right distinctions; how can we assume fingerprints do not? As long as one can draw inferences by analogy, everything aligns with principle, not just fingerprints.)
When observing the fingerprint, use the side of your thumb to push along the three sections of the child's index finger. Do not cover the finger with your palm while pushing. Because the whorls contain Fire, which controls Lung Metal, the fingerprint color will inevitably change. Furthermore, one should only push from the Ming Guan (Life Gate) toward Feng Guan (Wind Gate), never from Feng Guan out toward Ming Guan. If the fingerprint becomes more exposed with pushing, it means the original mark did not penetrate the section, but was erroneously pushed out, severely damaging Lung Qi. Be cautious and beware!
The above judgments regarding Exterior/Interior, Cold/Heat, and Deficiency/Excess are well-founded. If one can clearly distinguish these six characters during clinical practice, one will naturally have mastery over the situation. Although one may not hit the mark perfectly, one will not be far off. If one merely uses "Fright Syndrome" as an excuse to shirk responsibility, responding is not difficult, but self-reflection each morning brings shame. I hope my colleagues will encourage and sharpen each other; this would be fortunate indeed!
