The infant's whole body is hot as fire, yet the hands and feet are ice-cold; this condition is truly difficult to treat. If blackness covers the Taiyin area and the corners of the mouth appear green, even the divine physician Lu Qi would be startled. If blackness hangs like needles under the eyes, even Bian Que would feel fear. If blackness appears in the eyes, the prognosis is generally poor, and the infant will inevitably die within ten days. In edema disease, if the tip of the nose (Zhuntou) is black, it should be known that the Kidney Qi is exhausted. For coughing, white color appearing in the eyebrows is most taboo; this indicates Lung Qi exhaustion, so I inform you. Dim eyes without luster that do not rotate indicate that life cannot be sustained after three days. Eyes that seem open but are not fully open, even if the child can speak, serve as a harbinger of death. Unstoppable vomiting, where vomiting stops only to resume again, indicates Stomach deficiency and Spleen failure; there is no need to spare concern. Shaking the head and grinding teeth, as if wanting to bite into flesh, suggests approaching death or spiritual affliction. The fontanelle may be swollen or sunken; depleted Yuan Qi means life is hard to sustain. Vomiting snake- or insect-like matter that is rotten and spoiled indicates Spleen exhaustion, which ultimately harms the infant. Why do the five centers (two palms, two soles, and the chest) suddenly swell? This is false fire manifesting externally, indicating a shocking underlying reality. If the limbs, previously unremarkable, suddenly tremble, physicians have no medicine left to use. These are critical conditions in infants; I tell physicians not to hold back (from stating the severity).
The left cheek belongs to the Liver Meridian; green color is a favorable sign (Shun), while white is unfavorable (Ni).
The right cheek belongs to the Lung Meridian; white color is a favorable sign, while red is unfavorable.
The forehead belongs to the Heart Meridian; red color is a favorable sign, while black is unfavorable.
The tip of the nose belongs to the Spleen Meridian; yellow color is a favorable sign, while green is unfavorable.
The chin belongs to the Kidney Meridian; black color is a favorable sign, while yellow is unfavorable.
When an infant is first born, prolonged bathing is not advisable for fear of catching wind-cold, which must lead to conditions such as umbilical tetanus (Qi Feng) and fever.
For a newborn, do not administer milk first. Instead, decoct Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma) and Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), wrap soft cotton around two fingers, dip them in the medicinal liquid, and wipe the mouth to remove evil blood and foul qi from the oral cavity; or irrigate with the medicinal liquid. Wait until the foul foam is completely vomited out, then feed milk.
Another method uses aged tea and Jingmo (Beijing Ink) to wash the mouth, or administer:
Wan'an Tang (Ten Thousand Peace Decoction): Treats infants upon birth; administering this medicine first ensures no convulsions (Jing Feng) and reduces skin diseases.
Qiaoliao (Forsythiae Fructum), Xifeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Jingjie (Schizonepetae Spica), Chantui (Cicadae Periostracum), Gouteng (Uncariae Ramulus cum Uncis) (each 1 qian), Suhé (Perilla Caulis and Menthae Haplocalycis Herba), Chishao (Paeoniae Radix Rubra), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (each 0.5 qian), Yinhua (Lonicerae Japonicae Flos) (2 qian), Dengxincao (Junci Medulla) (as a guiding herb); if the infant spent summer in the womb, add Shujun (Prepared Rheomi Radix) 1 qian.
Xiao'er Xi San (Infant Third-Day Bath): Three or nine days after birth, when the weather is mild, in winter ensure the room is warm by burning firewood. Boil one liang of Kulianzi (Meliae Semen) in water and wash/wipe the infant's entire body to prevent sores and itching. If washed once or twice monthly, it can prevent smallpox and measles; even if they erupt, they will be sparse.
Another method uses Cang'erzi (Xanthii Fructus) decoction for washing.
Another method uses Wuyu (Carassius Auratus) decoction for washing.
