Various symptoms such as excessive sleepiness, lack of appetite, vomiting, and diarrhea are all primary diseases of the Spleen organ. For lethargy accompanied by fever, Wei Ling Wan (Stomach-Poria Pill) or Hu Po Bao Long Wan (Amber-Embracing-Dragon Pill) is indicated. Vomiting and diarrhea may be due to Cold or Heat patterns. In Cold patterns, there is no thirst, and Li Zhong Wan (Regulate the Middle Pill) is indicated. In Heat patterns, there is thirst with a desire to drink cold water, and Wu Ling San (Five-Ingredient Poria Powder) combined with Tian Shui San (Heaven-Water Powder) is indicated.
When Liver symptoms are concurrent: Initially, wind-strike causes vomiting and diarrhea, with aversion to wind, fever, irritability, and sudden chest oppression. This requires dispersing pathogenic factors, using Xing Xing San (Xing-Xing Powder). If vomiting and diarrhea occur first, followed by a transformation into Slow Convulsive Wind (Man Jing Feng), it is intractable.
Wu Ling San (Five-Ingredient Poria Powder) can differentiate Yin and Yang, stop vomiting and diarrhea, promote urination, and calm palpitations and fright.
Zhu Ling (Polyporus), Ze Xie (Alisma), Bai Zhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome), Chi Fu Ling (Red Poria), Gui Zhi (Cinnamon Twig - reduced by half). All ingredients should be cut or powdered, decocted in water. Adding Cinnabar creates Zhu Sha Wu Ling San; adding Yin Chen (Artemisia Scoparia) creates Yin Chen Wu Ling San.
Tian Shui San, also known as Liu Yi San (Six-to-One Powder), clears heat, relieves thirst, transforms phlegm-saliva, and promotes urination.
Hua Shi (Talcum, processed by flying), Gan Cao (Licorice Root, honey-fried). Grind uniformly into powder, take with water.
Xing Xing San treats Shang Han (Cold Damage) and epidemic Qi with wind-heat, phlegm-saliva, and cough.
It consists of Si Jun Zi Tang (Four Gentlemen Decoction) plus Jie Geng (Platycodon Root), Xi Xin (Asarum), Gua Lou Gen (Trichosanthes Root), Fang Feng (Saposhnikovia Root) (all in equal parts). Grind into powder. For young children, administer one qian per dose; for older children, two qian. Add five leaves of Bo He (Mint), decoct in water until three-sevenths remain, and take warm. Cutting the herbs is also acceptable.
When Heart symptoms are concurrent: Fever, lethargy, and fright/palpitations in dreams indicate Dong Yuan An Shen Wan (Dong-Yuan Calming-Spirit Pill). If thirsty and desiring water, Chen Sha Wu Ling San (Cinnabar Five-Ingredient Poria Powder) is indicated.
When Lung symptoms are concurrent: Fever, lethargy, shortness of breath, and wheezing indicate Ting Li Wan (Descurainia Seed Pill).
Ting Li Wan treats food stagnation attacking the Spleen, wind-strike causing wheezing and cough, and phlegm-saliva causing rapid breathing.
Tian Ting Li (Descurainia Seed, skin removed and stir-fried between paper), Hei Qian Niu (Black Morning Glory Seed, stir-fried to obtain the finest powder), Fang Ji (Stephania Root), Xing Ren (Apricot Seed, skin and tip removed, ground into paste) (all in equal parts). Grind and mix evenly.
For weak constitutions, modifications are made. My family's transmitted method removes Hei Qian Niu and adds Luo Bo Zi (Radish Seed) and Zhen Su Zi (Perilla Seed), stir-fried, which is particularly effective.
When Kidney symptoms are concurrent: Emaciation, flaccidity and weakness, excessive sleeping, and inability to rise indicate simultaneous tonification of the Spleen and Kidney. For tonifying the Kidney, Di Huang Wan (Rehmannia Pill) is indicated; for tonifying the Spleen, Yang Pi Wan (Nourish-Spleen Pill) is indicated. If diarrhea persists for a long time resulting in pus and blood in the stool, the prognosis is fatal.
Bu Shen Wan (Tonify-Kidney Pill): This is a sacred formula from my family for tonifying the Spleen. Children often have insufficient Spleen Qi, so this formula is suitable for tonification.
Ren Shen (Ginseng Root), Bai Zhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome), Fu Ling (Poria), Fen Cao (Licorice Root), Bai Shao (White Peony Root, wine-fried), Huang Qi (Astragalus Root, honey-fried), Chen Pi (Tangerine Peel), Dang Gui Shen (Angelica Sinensis Root Body), Shan Yao (Dioscorea Rhizome), Lian Rou (Lotus Seed Flesh) (all in equal parts).
A girl suffered from excessive sleepiness, fever, soft neck, and head tilting unable to lift. Various physicians treated her as a wind disease but hesitated without resolution. Upon seeing her, I said to the physicians: "This is a deficiency of Yang disease. The head is the summit of all Yang meridians, and the Stomach is the convergence of all Yang. This girl must have injured her Stomach with milk and food, leading to insufficient Stomach Qi, thus preventing Clear Yang from ascending, resulting in a soft neck unable to support the head. She can take Tiao Yuan Tang (Regulate-Origin Decoction); one dose will bring peace." People were amazed and convinced.
