Bone is nourished by marrow. If a child's blood and qi are not sufficient, the marrow cavity will be incomplete, causing the bones to be weak and unable to support walking; this is also due to the deficiency of both the Liver and Kidney. The Liver governs the sinews; if the Liver is deficient, the sinews become weak and fail to constrain the bones.

Dihuang Wan (Rehmannia Pill): See the formula in the "Liver and Kidney Section," added with Niuxi (Achyranthes Root), Wujia Pi (Eucommia Bark), Jiuzhi Lurong (Wine-processed Deer Antler), Hu Jinggu (Tiger Tibia Bone, wine-processed), Sheng Gan Dihuang (Raw Dried Rehmannia Root), Suanzaoren (Ziziphus Seed, wine-soaked, skin removed, fried until fragrant), La Gui (Cinnamon Twig), Bai Fuling (Poria), Fangfeng (Saposhnikovia Root), Danggui (Angelica Sinensis), Chuanxiong (Ligusticum Chuanxiong), and Niuxi (Achyranthes Root) in equal parts.
Grind the above herbs into fine powder. Take 1.5 qian per dose, mix with rice broth, add two drops of good wine, stir well, and take before meals, twice daily.

Jiyu Fang (Crucian Carp Formula): Treats pediatric white tinea capitis (white scaly patches on the scalp).
Take one crucian carp weighing three or four liang, remove the intestines and viscera, fill with tangled hair, and cover with wet Xionghuang (Realgar).
Apply the above powder mixed with raw sesame oil to the affected area. First wash the area with steam water, then apply the medicine.

Zhuchuang Jiu Bu Chai Fang (Formula for Chronic Ulcers Not Healing):
Baijiaoxiang (White Rosin, half liang, ground into powder), Qingfen (Calomel, two qian, ground together), applied with pig fat, or Baijiaoxiang (which is Songzhi/Pine Resin) mixed with Zhu Tong Suishui (Pig Marrow from the bone tube). Note: Songzhi is also used for treating severe wind diseases; melt the pine resin and pour it into cold water.
Grind the above into powder, mix with water, and take regularly on an empty stomach.

Biao Chuang Fang (Agonizing Ulcer Formula): Treats sudden onset of agonizing ulcers with redness and erosion. Burn cow dung to ash, grind finely, and apply.

Chen Wuze said: When the pulse at the three positions (Cun, Guan, Chi) in children is surging and rapid, varying in size, not responding to the finger pressure, and swift, this indicates Dou Chuang (Smallpox).
Zhu Danxi stated that red veins and threads behind the ear are signs of Smallpox.

Chen Wenzhong said: While in the womb, the fetus is formed and nurtured by the mother's five zang organs. If the mother disregards taboos, indulges her desires, adds rich flavors, prefers sour and pungent tastes, or consumes toxic substances, these energies condense within the fetal sac. Thus, while in the womb, the child receives this toxin, known as San Hui Ye Du (Three Filthy Fluid Toxin). What we now call Smallpox is the eruption of this Three Filthy Fluid Toxin. Zhu Danxi said that its initial onset resembles Shang Han (Cold Damage); thus, symptoms include fever, irritability, red face, red lips, body pain, headache, alternating chills and heat, sneezing, yawning, coughing, and phlegm. It may be contracted due to Wind-Cold or Cold Damage, food stagnation with vomiting, falls, fright, or blood stasis. Symptoms may include eye protrusion, locked jaw, convulsions resembling wind syndrome, or pain in the mouth, tongue, throat, and abdomen. Since the sores emerge from the mouth and abdomen, they cause pain. There may also be irritability, mania, delirium, spontaneous sweating, diarrhea, fever, or absence of fever. The manifestations are diverse and difficult to distinguish abruptly. One must verify using cold ears, cold feet, and cold hands. Generally, rashes belong to Yang. If the Kidney has no disease, since the ears and feet belong to the Kidney, the Kidney's region alone feels cold. However, each of the five zang organs and three fluids manifests differently: the Heart presents as red spots (as the Heart governs blood, red and small); the Liver presents as water blisters (as tears flow like water, red and large); the Lung presents as pus-filled blisters (as nasal discharge is thick and turbid, white and large); the Spleen governs scabbing, which is slightly yellow; only the Kidney cannot tolerate toxins—if it turns black, death ensues. Generally, all things under heaven and earth sprout in Spring and grow in Summer due to the steaming of Yang Qi. In the case of Smallpox, if the zang organs are harmonious and blood and qi are abundant, eruption and crusting occur naturally because the exterior is warm and there is no internal cold. Hence, it is said that Spring and Summer are favorable, while Autumn and Winter are unfavorable. This is a general principle. Those who have convulsions first and then eruptive sores survive; those who develop wind symptoms after the sores heal die. Those who vomit or have diarrhea die. Those who have fever and spontaneous diarrhea before eruption survive. Those whose diarrhea continues incessantly after eruption perish. If the sores turn black and suddenly discharge pus, blood, and crusts, it is favorable, indicating sores in the abdomen. If there is bloody diarrhea with undigested food, it is unfavorable, indicating Spleen and Stomach deficiency.
Qian Yi said: Eruption appearing all at once is severe; sores accompanied by macules are moderately severe; sparse eruption is mild; black outside and white inside is slightly severe; white outside and black inside is very severe; black like a needle hole at the tip of the sore indicates critical condition; green, dry, purple, sunken sores, lethargy, unceasing exudate, dryness, heat, thirst, distension, crying, panting, and obstruction of urination and defecation indicate exhaustion. The method of care involves detoxification, harmonization, peaceful surface-releasing, etc. For deficiency, tonify; for excess, reduce; for cold, warm; for heat, cool. These are principles expressed metaphorically. Like the method of cooking dragon meat, one merely desires it to be loose. One must also strictly avoid Wind and Cold to ensure the body's qi and blood flow smoothly. Regarding gruel and food, do not let the child become full and qi-excessed, nor hungry and internally deficient. Thus, caregivers of such patients should pay attention to these details.
