The predecessors left behind formulas regarding fatal conditions. However, treating them can sometimes result in survival. Physicians must not abandon treatment.
Da Chong (Great Surge), also known as Da Dun (Great Mound) acupoint. Absence of pulse indicates a deficiency syndrome, belonging to insufficiency of healthy qi. Staring straight ahead and shaking the head indicates a wind syndrome, belonging to excess pathogenic factors. If these two occur simultaneously, it seems illogical; if they truly coexist, it is an incurable condition. If only one symptom is present, it is definitely not a fatal condition. Spontaneous opening and closing of the fish mouth (external genitalia), suddenly making crow-like sounds: this indicates phlegm in the Spleen and wind in the Liver. If wind is dispelled and phlegm is resolved, it is not a fatal condition. Expulsion of all roundworms without aggravating heat; tonifying the Spleen brings peace, which is also not a fatal condition. Yellow complexion with swollen limbs: if the yellow has a lustrous quality, tonifying the Spleen and moving Qi will cause it to dissipate naturally, which is not a fatal condition. As for blackness and dryness at the nose tip combined with abdominal distension and visible blue veins; hands holding the head combined with sweat dripping like oil; fontanelle swelling then suddenly sinking into a pit. If only one of these occurs, it is still not a fatal condition. If all are indeed present, death is certain.
(Those passed down by predecessors but ineffective are deleted. Those verified over two generations are added. For those where the formula was transmitted unclearly, personal insights are offered to elucidate them.)
If an infant's ten fingers are cold as ice, it indicates an unsettled state due to convulsive disease (Jing Feng). If the tips of the ten fingers are hot as fire, it indicates food retention complicated by cold damage (Shang Han). (Holding them may not be accurate; test again by pressing the infant's fingers against my cheek; it will not fail.)
Press the infant's forehead with three fingers of mine. If wind pathogen is felt, the three fingers feel hot. If the three fingers feel cold when pressing, it indicates internal injury from diet leading to wind pathogen invasion. (Above are methods for probing illness.)
The annual Qi corresponds to twenty-four solar terms; pushing the Tian Men (Heavenly Gate) on the forehead follows this principle. Since ancient times, Yin and Yang numbers involve nine; pushing apart on the forehead carries the same meaning. Pinch sequentially from Tian Ting (Heavenly Court) down to Cheng Jiang (Receiving Pool). (Zhuo Xi note) Using pinching instead of acupuncture to move Blood and Qi. (This is the initial pushing method.)
For cold damage, push up the San Guan (Three Passes). For organ-heat, specifically push the Liu Fu (Six Bowels). (Zhuo Xi note) Pushing the Six Bowels corresponds to one San Guan; pushing San Guan ten times corresponds to three Six Bowels. Push more than the response requires (if pushing yields no response, fever may stir Fire; too much cooling causes stagnation), thereby regulating and balancing so that Blood and Qi do not deviate.
Crying sounds originate from the Lungs. No sound indicates Lung exhaustion, which is tragic. (Zhuo Xi note) If voice is difficult to produce due to phlegm obstruction, the physician must use skillful judgment. (Zhuo Xi note) When disease reaches Gao Huang (Diaphragm and Heart), attack is contraindicated. I know Fei Shu (BL13) acupoint can unblock it. Do not worry about phlegm blocking silence; moxibustion can surpass even superior physicians.
Bai Hui (DU20) originates at the crown of the head. This single acupoint governs the whole body. For prostration, retroflexion, deviation, or epilepsy, three moxa cones are worth ten thousand gold. For unbearable abdominal pain accompanied by bloody stool, seek moxibustion here.
For gaping mouth, shaking head, and opisthotonos, quickly apply moxibustion to Gui Yan (Ghost Eye) acupoint. Add a strong moxa cone to the umbilicus; this is the most wonderful secret of treatment.
(Zhuo Xi note) Jian Jing (GB21) acupoint is a major pass. Pinching here opens the flow of Blood and Qi. After completing pushing elsewhere, pinch here; do not worry that Blood and Qi will not circulate throughout the body.
When disease affects the Spleen causing loss of appetite, heavily rub Gen Gong (Gen Palace) for miraculous effect. Then add circular pushing with the thumb surface (the character "rotate" cannot be ignored). If the Spleen is newly injured, pushing will yield immediate results.
Headache and abdominal pain: treat Wai Lao Gong (Outer Labor Palace). Rubbing Wai Lao Gong shows efficacy immediately. How does the physician identify pain? (Zhuo Xi note) Brows furrowed, crying loudly. (Ancients only said headache and abdominal pain; without this differentiation method, how would one know?)
Excessive Heat in the Heart Meridian causes confusion. Guide Tian He Shui (River Water) upward to Hong Chi (Red Pool). Scoop bright moon from the bottom of the palm (Lao Gong area); generating coolness in the Six Bowels, why fear confusion?
If infant organs have cold wind, ask the physician where to attack. Rub Wai Lao Gong and flex the fingers; this is called "Yellow Bee Entering the Cave."
When rubbing and pinching the nail beds of the five fingers, one must know if there is wind fright. If consciousness is hard to regain, grasp Jing (Jingming, BL1) and Wei (Weizhong, BL40) acupoints oppositely.
Disease in the Gallbladder Meridian causes bitter taste. Use the subtle method of pushing Pi Tu (Spleen Earth). (Zhuo Xi note) How does the physician know of bitter taste? The mouth closes frequently twisting left and right. (Ancients only said bitter taste; without this method, how to know it is bitter taste?)
Push the lateral side of the Large Intestine meridian (do not ignore "lateral") to Hu Kou (LI4). This stops diarrhea and dysentery at the root. (Zhuo Xi note) Do not push obliquely from the finger surface, regardless of broken bones or pierced skin. Rub the umbilicus and also rub Gui Wei (Turtle Tail); further push and rub to Yong Quan (KI1).
Kidney Water corresponds to the little finger and Hou Xi (SI3) acupoint. Pushing up clears, pushing down tonifies. Clearing is excellent for urinary retention and red urine; tonifying is suitable for scanty urine due to Kidney deficiency. (The anterior aspect of the little finger belongs to Kidney Water.)
(Zhuo Xi note) Crying in the first month after birth: Qi stagnation causing intestinal colic should not be doubted. Apply lamp-moxibustion to the umbilical ring and chest. Use Mu Xiang (Aucklandiae Radix) promptly. (Body not heated, crying vigorous.)
Blue sclera indicates Liver Wind; nasal ulceration and sores indicate Lung Heat attack. (Zhuo Xi note) To dispel wind, use Qu Feng San (Wind-Dispelling Powder); clearing Lung via finger manipulation has equal efficacy.
Slight yellow/purple on the nose tip is acceptable. (Zhuo Xi note) Strange redness with dryness indicates Heat residing in the Spleen. Clear Pi Tu (Spleen Earth) on the thumb surface; decocting Zao Tu (Furnace Soil/Fu Long Gan) is also appropriate.
Tai Yang channel induces sweating profusely; for weak bodies, combine with rubbing Tai Yin to stop sweating. Tai Yin inducing sweating suits girls; Tai Yang stopping sweating belongs solely to females.
Eyes rolling back: pinch Xiao Tian Xin (Small Heavenly Heart). Looking up requires pinching below to level it. If eyes look low at the ground, pinching Tian Xin returns gaze.
(Zhuo Xi note) Mouth and eye pulling to the right: extreme Liver Wind, follow the wind to pull. If mouth and eye pull frequently to the left, it is definitely Phlegm stirring in the Spleen. Kidney Water resides above and below the lips; how can wind not create waves? Eyes belong to Liver Wood; branches move due to wind, which is logical. Pull right to the left earlobe; pull left to the right ear edge. (Pull down the earlobe.)
(Zhuo Xi note) Yellow around eyes on the third or seventh day: this is Umbilical Wind injuring the Liver. Urgently apply thirteen points of lamp-moxibustion; this is the First Formula of Medical Immortals.
(Zhuo Xi note) If massage shows improvement, the illness is light. In severe cases, do not say medicine is ineffective. Treating fright requires Yuan Xiao Fire (lantern fire); without fire, how can fright be settled? If using massage, it must be in the afternoon; never massage in the early morning. Whether you can use fire or medicine, frequent heating often retreats by Wu Geng (early morning). These earnest words have no other intent, lest you laugh that Mr.'s secrets are untrue.
