Snake bite. Apply moxibustion with three moxa cones at the affected site.
For the above-mentioned moxibustion methods, use slices of single-clove garlic to cover the affected area. Place mugwort (Artemisia argyi) on top and perform moxibustion.
Shuifen (Lead Carbonate), Huangla (Yellow Beeswax) each 5 qian. Hanshuishi (Calcitum, prepared by water flotation) 1 liang. Ruxiang (Boswellia Carteri Gum Resin, de-oiled) 2 qian. Mayou (Sesame Oil) 3 liang. First boil the sesame oil in a pot. Add the beeswax until melted. Then add the Shuifen and prepared Hanshuishi and simmer together. Finally, add the Ruxiang and stir evenly to form an ointment. Apply externally for immediate cure.
Dan (Pill) for treating Ru Yong (Mastitis) in both adults and children.
Ding Chuang (Carbuncle), Fa Bei (Back Carbuncle), Nao Yong (Brain Abscess), Bin Ju (Temple Furuncle), Ru Yong (Mastitis), and all un-named swellings and toxic sores. Take Feilong Duoming Dan (Flying Dragon Life-Taking Pill). After taking it, the swelling will develop a head. Areas that were previously painless and itchless will become painful and itchy. If not yet suppurated, it will resolve internally; if already suppurated, it will immediately ulcerate. The toxin transforms into black fluid and is excreted through urine. This is a miraculous pill for treating malignant toxic swellings.
Ingredients: Chansu (Toad Venom, dried, dissolved in wine) 3 qian. Danfan (Alumen, Copper Sulfate) 1 qian. Haiyangchong (Sea Sheep Insect, likely a specific marine or terrestrial insect used in TCM) 20 pieces. Xionghuang (Realgar) 3 qian. Qingfen (Calomel) 5 fen. Wugong (Centipede, one piece, roasted until yellow, head and feet removed). Shexiang (Moschus) Piannao (Borneol) each 5 fen.
Grind all ingredients into fine powder. Use wine as a binder to make pills the size of mung beans. Take 3 pills per dose. Chew 3 stalks of scallion white (each 2 cun long) thoroughly and spit into the left palm of males or the right palm of females. Wrap the pill inside the chewed scallion. Swallow with 3-4 cups of hot water mixed with wine. Cover with thick blankets to induce sweating. After about the time it takes to eat a meal, drink more hot wine to assist sweating. The toxin will then dissipate. If no sweat occurs, the toxin is severe. Take another 3 pills. Effectiveness is seen upon sweating. This method of inducing sweat is applicable only for Fa Bei and Ding Chuang. I received this prescription from the abbot of Xiaoxitian Lama Monastery at Huohuayuan in Xu's residence in the capital. It is effective for people of all ages and genders suffering from the aforementioned conditions.
A physician treating disease is like a scholar composing eight-legged essays. Diseases have exterior/interior and severe/mild distinctions, just as essay topics vary in size and structure. Diseases have their origin and progression; medication employs methods of clearing the source and blocking the flow, analogous to the connection between preceding and following text in writing. Writing follows rules of connecting above and below; medicinal properties are like key words interpreting the topic. If the depth of understanding the meaning of these "words" (medicinal properties) is unclear, errors will occur. Consider Bu Xi (Zixia). Regarding the poem line "Su yi wei xuan," because he skimmed over one sentence, he failed to understand the meaning of the character "wei." Therefore, can physicians neglect studying the properties of hundreds of herbs without thorough investigation? Previously, I listed prescriptions based on symptoms, treating diseases with appropriate medicines, which is correct. However, if one is ignorant of medicinal properties, how can one adjust formulas when symptoms change? Thus, I have briefly listed the properties of a hundred commonly used pediatric herbs on the left side of this chapter for detailed study and selection.
