Treating deficiencies of Ying Qi (Nutritive Qi), Wei Qi (Defensive Qi), and Qi and Blood.
Huangqi (Astragali Radix, processed with honey and wine; 3 qian to 6 qian.) Renshen (Ginseng Radix; 3 qian to 1 liang.) Gancao (Licorice Root, roasted; 1 qian.)
Decoct in water. Take on an empty stomach.
Dushen Tang (Single Ginseng Decoction): Treats inability of Qi to control blood due to Qi deficiency, resulting in sudden massive hemorrhage or metrorrhagia that does not stop.
Renshen (Ginseng Radix) 3 qian to 1 liang. For patients with extreme deficiency and sudden collapse, use 1 liang to 3 liang. If Stomach Qi is weak with poor appetite, add Jupi (Tangerine Peel); if Lung Qi is weak with wheezing and cough, add Juhong (Red Tangerine Peel); for blood loss, add Tongbian (Child's Urine) half a cup and Jiangzhi (Ginger Juice) three spoons. (Another prescription adds three Jingzao [Beijing Jujubes].)
Guipi Tang (Restore the Spleen Decoction): Treats stagnation and knotting of the Heart and Spleen, and irregular menstruation.
Based on Baoyuan Tang, add Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Fuling (Poria), Suanzaoren (Ziziphi Spinosae Semen), Yuanzhi Rou (Polygalae Radix flesh), Dangguishen (Angelicae Sinensis Radix body), Guiyuanrou (Longan Aril), Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix), Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger), Hongzao (Jujubae Fructus).
Jiawei Guipi Tang (Modified Restore the Spleen Decoction): Treats stagnation and knotting of the Heart and Spleen, amenorrhea accompanied by fever.
Based on Guipi Tang, add Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix), Shanzhiren (Gardeniae Semen).
Shengyu Tang (Sage Renewal Decoction): Treats ulceration and suppuration caused by excessive blood loss.
Based on Baoyuan Tang, remove Gancao, add Shengdihuang (Rehmanniae Radix), Shudihuang (Prepared Rehmanniae Radix), Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix).
Shiquan Dabu Tang (Ten Complete Great Tonifying Decoction, from *Ju Fang*): Treats simultaneous deficiency of Ying Qi, Wei Qi, Qi, and Blood.
Based on Baoyuan Tang, add Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Fuling (Poria), Shudi (Prepared Rehmanniae Radix), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Baishao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), Rougui (Cinnamomi Cortex), Jiang (Ginger), Zao (Jujube). Note: The *Ju Fang* version of Shiquan Dabu Tang, although derived from Baoyuan Tang, is actually a combination of four formulas: Sijunzi Tang (Four Gentlemen Decoction), Siwu Tang (Four Substances Decoction), and Huangqi Jianzhong Tang (Astragalus Middle-Building Decoction). It is suitable for cases of vexatious heat and emaciation caused by improper diet and overwork. However, if used mistakenly for patients with Yin deficiency and flaming fire due to sexual exhaustion damaging essence or excessive thinking damaging spirit, it may cause Yin fire to rush upward and worsen the condition. Furthermore, ancient versions of Shiquan Dabu Tang did not contain Huangqi or Rougui, but instead used Chenxiang (Aquilaria Lignum) and Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix) specifically to open up stagnation in the Spleen and Stomach.
Renshen Yangrong Tang (Ginseng Nourishing Nutritive Qi Decoction, from *Ju Fang*): Treats deficiency-cold of the Heart and Spleen.
Based on Baoyuan Tang, add Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Fuling (Poria), Jupi (Tangerine Peel), Shudi (Prepared Rehmanniae Radix), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix), Rougui (Cinnamomi Cortex), Yuanzhi Rou (Polygalae Radix flesh), Wuweizi (Schisandrae Fructus). Note: All herbs in this formula enter the Heart and Spleen meridians. The old annotation claiming it tonifies Lung deficiency is incorrect. Nourishing Nutritive Qi should focus on tonifying the Heart and Spleen; it originally does not rely on Lung Qi.
Da Jianzhong Tang (Great Building Middle Decoction, from *Ju Fang*): Treats simultaneous deficiency of Ying and Wei Qi, with heat above and cold below.
Based on Shiquan Dabu Tang, add Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata), Roushouyu (Cistanches Herba), Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma), Maimendong (Ophiopogonis Radix).
Renshen Anwei San (Ginseng Calming Stomach Powder): Treats infants with extreme deficiency of Heart and Spleen causing tongue protrusion and playfulness.
Based on Baoyuan Tang, add Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma), Fuling (Poria), Baishao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), Sheng Gancao (Raw Licorice Root).
Renshen Shiwei Tang (Ginseng Solidifying Defensive Qi Decoction): Treats persistent spontaneous sweating in malaria.
Based on Baoyuan Tang, add Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix). At initial onset, add Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus); for chronic malaria, add Wumei (Mume Fructus).
Huangqi Liuyi Tang (Astragalus Six-to-One Decoction, from *Ju Fang*): Treats spontaneous sweating due to Wei Qi deficiency and daytime vexatious heat.
Based on Baoyuan Tang, remove Renshen, use Huangqi (Astragali Radix) 6 qian, Gancao (Licorice Root) 1 qian, add one Zao (Jujube).
Danggui Buxue Tang (Angelica Tonifying Blood Decoction): Treats night fever due to blood deficiency, vexation, thirst with desire to drink, pulse that is large and forceful yet empty, and completely void upon deep pressure.
Based on Baoyuan Tang, remove Renshen and Gancao, use Huangqi (Astragali Radix) 6 qian, add Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) 2 qian.
Yupingfeng San (Jade Windscreen Powder): Treats spontaneous sweating due to Wei Qi deficiency and susceptibility to wind pathogen. This formula tonifies the Spleen and solidifies Wei Qi.
Based on Baoyuan Tang, remove Renshen and Gancao, use Huangqi (Astragali Radix) 6 liang, add Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix) 2 liang, Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) 4 liang, processed into powder. Take 4-5 qian per dose, decocted with Jiang (Ginger) and Zao (Jujube).
The above three formulas are all variations of Baoyuan Tang without Renshen. Huangqi Liuyi Tang relies on the original Gancao to assist Huangqi in strengthening Spleen Qi, making it suitable for those with excessive daytime sweating and restlessness. Danggui Buxue Tang uses Danggui to guide Huangqi to protect Ying Blood, making it suitable for night fever after blood loss. Yupingfeng San adds Baizhu and Fangfeng to dispel dampness from the Wei level, making it suitable for those with loose pores susceptible to wind pathogens. Although all three formulas use Huangqi as the Sovereign herb, their functions differ significantly depending on whether they primarily regulate Qi, Blood, or Flesh through their Assistant and Envoy herbs.
Yiqi Congming Tang (Benefiting Qi and Brightening Eyes Decoction): Treats blurred vision and cataracts, deafness, and tinnitus due to Qi deficiency.
Based on Baoyuan Tang, add Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma), Gegen (Puerariae Lobatae Radix), Manjingzi (Viticis Semen), Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix), Jiuhuangbo (Phellodendri Cortex processed with wine). This combines Baoyuan Tang with Shengma Tang, adding Manjingzi to treat the upper part and Huangbo to treat the lower part.
Shenxiao Huangqi Tang (Divine Efficacy Astragalus Decoction): Treats unclear vision and hearing due to Qi deficiency.
Based on Baoyuan Tang, use Huangqi (Astragali Radix) 2 qian, Renshen (Ginseng Radix) and Gancao (Licorice Root) 1 qian each, add Baishao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) 1 qian, Manjingzi (Viticis Semen) 2 fen, Jupi (Tangerine Peel) 5 fen. For eye and ear disorders, if caused by Qi deficiency with Yin fire rushing upward, Yiqi Congming Tang is appropriate; if there is no Yin fire, Shenxiao Huangqi Tang is appropriate. Users must discern carefully.
Qianjin Tuoli San (Thousand Gold Supporting Interior Powder): Treats deficiency-cold of Qi and Blood causing ulcers that fail to close.
Based on Baoyuan Tang, add Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Rougui (Cinnamomi Cortex), Baizhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix), Baishao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), Tiantong (Asparagi Radix), Lianqiao (Forsythiae Fructus), Rendong (Lonicerae Japonicae Flos), Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger).
Shen Neituo San (Ginseng Interior-Supporting Powder): Treats ulcers complicated by wind pathogen invasion, impetigo/rash sinking due to contact with filth, and carbuncles/furuncles that fail to suppurate after a long time.
Based on Baoyuan Tang, add Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Rougui (Cinnamomi Cortex), Baizhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix), Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix), Houpo (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex). Removing Muxiang from this formula yields Shixuan San (Ten Acupoints Powder), used for impetigo and carbuncles.
Tuoli Xiaodu San (Supporting Interior and Detoxifying Powder): Treats carbuncles, furuncles, impetigo, and rash where toxicity is severe but cannot erupt.
Based on Baoyuan Tang, add Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix), Fuling (Poria), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Rendong (Lonicerae Japonicae Flos), Baizhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix), Lianqiao (Forsythiae Fructus).
Neibu Huangqi Tang (Interior-Nourishing Astragalus Decoction): Treats excessive discharge of pus from ulcers, deficiency-heat, insomnia, and night sweats.
Based on Baoyuan Tang, add Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Fuling (Poria), Wuweizi (Schisandrae Fructus), Zaoren (Ziziphi Spinosae Semen).
Renshen Guji Tang (Ginseng Consolidating Muscle Decoction): Treats surface deficiency in smallpox/rash causing erosion and failure to scab over.
Based on Baoyuan Tang, add Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Fuling (Poria), Zaoren (Ziziphi Spinosae Semen), Rendong (Lonicerae Japonicae Flos), Lianqiao (Forsythiae Fructus).
Buzhong Yiqi Tang (Tonify the Middle and Benefit Qi Decoction): Treats internal injury causing sinking of Middle Qi. Contraindicated for deficiency of the Lower Origin.
Based on the original Baoyuan Tang formula, reduce Renshen and Gancao by half, add Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) 1 qian, Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Jupi (Tangerine Peel), Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix) 8 fen each, Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma) 5 fen. For cold contracted due to labor, add Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), Jiang (Ginger), Zao (Jujube). In winter, add Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus). In spring, add Xiangchi (Fermented Soybean), Congbai (Scallion White).
Tiaozhong Yiqi Tang (Regulating Middle and Benefiting Qi Decoction): Treats heavy body, pain in all joints, chest fullness and shortness of breath, vexation, tinnitus, eyes feeling hot like fire, salivation in the mouth, loss of taste, lethargy, and dark urine.
Based on Buzhong Yiqi Tang, add Baishaoyao (White Peony Root), Wuweizi (Schisandrae Fructus).
Shengyang Yiwang Tang (Raising Yang and Benefiting Stomach Decoction): Treats damage to the Spleen and Stomach with evil heat sinking inward, manifesting as aversion to wind externally, cold limbs, deep pulse, and constipation/difficulty in urination and defecation. Do not mistake this for Yin-cold and use hot herbs; do not mistake it for Excess-fire and use cooling herbs. Use this decoction to raise Yang; slight sweating will lead to recovery.
Based on Buzhong Yiqi Tang, remove Shengma and Danggui, add Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), Duhuo (Angelicae Pubescentis Radix), Baishao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma), Fuling (Poria), Zexie (Alismatis Rhizoma). Decoct Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma) with wine, add Jiang (Ginger) and Zao (Jujube). After taking the medicine, avoid speaking for 1-2 hours. Avoid alcohol, wheat products, and raw/cold foods. Eat bland flavors to nourish Stomach Qi, and consume some delicious food to aid the medicinal power. Engage in mild physical activity to help the Stomach Qi transport and rise with the medicine. Avoid excessive labor that damages the generating Qi of the Spleen and Stomach.
