Zengqing (Chrysocolla) and Zaogen (Root of Ziziphus jujuba) are its guiding herbs. It is incompatible with Huashi (Talcum), Xiaoshi (Niter). It dislikes Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Yelangdu (Euphorbia fischeriana Root), and Shanzhuyu (Corni Fructus). It is contraindicated with Lilu (Veratri Rhizoma). Raw vegetables and狸肉 (fox meat) should be avoided.
Pungent, bitter, warm. Enters the blood level of the Foot-Shaoyin Kidney Meridian and Foot-Jueyin Liver Meridian. Warms the meridians and disperses pathogens. Treats headache and stiffness of the spine caused by wind-cold-dampness; coughing and rebellious qi; fluid retention under the heart; phlegm accumulation leading to fright and epilepsy; throat obstruction and closure; mouth sores and toothache; excessive tearing and inverted eyelashes; deafness and nasal congestion; bi-syndrome and pain in the waist and feet; spasms, dampness, and itching; Ben Tun (fleeing pig) and hernia; breast nodules and difficult urination. Combined with Huangla (Yellow Beeswax) into pills, wrapped in cotton and inserted into the ear, it treats deafness. Combined with Chuanlian (Coptidis Rhizoma), applied externally, it treats mouth sores and toothache. Combined with Guixin (Cinnamon Twig Heart), it treats Ke Wu (external evil invasion). Ground into powder and insufflated into the nose, it treats An Feng (hidden wind) causing sudden collapse and loss of consciousness. (Also treats nasal polyps.)
It is effective for postpartum yin syndromes. The northern variety has thin stems, purple color, and a pungent fragrance. Discard those with double leaves; soak in Tiangua water overnight, then dry in the sun before use. Contraindicated for headaches caused by wind-heat, yin deficiency, or blood deficiency.
Its nature is extremely pungent and acrid. For patients with both qi and blood deficiency, using only 1-2 fen can be effective; do not exceed 3-4 fen. If used up to 7-8 fen or even 1 qian, true qi will scatter, deficient qi will rush upward causing blockage, leading to sudden suffocation and unconsciousness.
(Baiwei) Is incompatible with Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma), Dazao (Jujubae Fructus), Shanzhuyu (Corni Fructus), Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma), Daji (Euphorbiae Pekinensis Radix), and Ganqi (Lacca Resina).
Bitter, salty, cold. A herb acting on the Yangming Meridian and the Chong and Ren vessels. Benefits yin qi and promotes the downward movement of water qi. Treats burning heat from wind-warmth, spontaneous sweating with heaviness of the body, somnolence with snoring, difficulty in speech, as well as Wen Nue (warm malaria) and Xue Jue (blood syncope); hot strangury and enuresis. Combined with Baishao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), it treats bloody strangury, hot strangury, and enuresis in women. (Applicable regardless of pre- or postpartum state.) Paired with Beimu (Fritillariae Bulbus), Donghua (Adenophorae Radix), and Bubu (Stemonae Radix), it treats lung excess with nasal congestion. Paired with Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum), Zhuru (Bambusae Caulis in Taenia), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), and Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus), it treats prepartum deficiency heat with irritability and vomiting. Assisted by Renshen (Ginseng Radix), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), and Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), it treats Xue Jue (blood syncope). (Excessive sweating leads to blood deficiency and solitary rising of yang qi; qi blockage causes the body to feel like death. When qi passes and blood returns, yin and yang reconnect, so consciousness returns after some time. This syndrome is particularly common in women.)
Remove the rootlets, wash with wine, or soak in rice washing water overnight, then steam before use. Contraindicated for patients with blood deficiency and weak qi.
