[Qiancao]
Averse to Paeonia suffruticosa (Mudanpi). Controlled against Realgar.
Bitter, cool. Enters the blood level of the Foot-Jueyin Meridian. Promotes blood circulation and unblocks menstruation. Eliminates miasma toxins, treats breast abscess. Paired with black soybean and roasted licorice root, boiled, treats blood thirst.
Paired with pomegranate peel, treats rectal prolapse. Assisted by mume fruit and rehmannia root, treats persistent epistaxis. Assisted by donkey-hide gelatin and biota tops, treats retained blood in women. Avoid lead and iron vessels.
Stir-fried with wine, promotes blood circulation. Stir-fried with child's urine, stops bleeding. Contraindicated for hematemesis and epistaxis due to blood deficiency, and for diarrhea with anorexia.
[Mutong]
Akebia caulis is its guide drug. Averse to Dioscorea hypoglauca (Bixie), Polygala tenuifolia (Nüwan), and halite (Luxian). Dislikes Asarum (Xixin). Neutralizes realgar and niter toxicity.
Bitter, pungent, cold. The primary herb for the Foot-Taiyang Meridian. Circulates through the twelve meridians, drains damp-heat from the blood level of the lower jiao. Dispels wind-water, eliminates warm malaria, reduces carbuncles and swellings, treats insect sores. With sesame leaves, unblocks painful urinary dribbling. Paired with anemarrhena and phellodendron, removes damp swelling in the lower jiao. Paired with peach kernel, treats severe constipation. Assisted by bupleurum root, treats hypochondriac pain. Combined with aconite processed with arisaema, treats hot phlegm. Combined with saussurea, treats shoulder and arm pain. Those with yellow heart and flowers are authentic. For dispelling wind, use Stephania tetrandra (Mufangji); for treating water retention, use Stephania hernandifolia (Hanfangji). Washed with wine, steamed together with plantago root for use.
Do not use if heat is in the upper jiao. (Fangji is a lower jiao herb.) Contraindicated for wind-heat in the qi level, inability to urinate, weak primordial qi, yin deficiency with internal heat, and post-illness deficiency thirst.
[Tongduomu]
Ancient name: Tongduomu
Sweet, bland, slightly cold. Enters the qi level of the Hand-Taiyin and Foot-Yangming Meridians. Drains lung qi, benefits the yin orifices, descends five types of strangury, promotes lactation. Can make the meridians circulate freely and ensure smooth flow of nutritive and defensive qi. (Because it can open the gate of Jueyin.) Assisted by amber and poria, drains fire and promotes urination.
Do not use for those with middle jiao cold.
[Tongcao]
Ancient name: Tongcao
Bitter, bland, neutral. Enters the qi level of the Hand-Jueyin and Hand-Foot-Taiyang Meridians. Drains pathogenic heat from the three jiao and directs it to the small intestine. Unblocks the blood vessels of the nine orifices and benefits the joints. Treats edema with floating and large appearance, treats flaming up of ministerial fire, induces labor and promotes lactation, relieves throat obstruction, removes spleen jaundice, treats nasal congestion, opens deafness, disperses carbuncles and swellings.
Paired with raw rehmannia root, roasted licorice root, and bamboo leaf, treats heart heat with red urine.
Contraindicated for kidney qi deficiency, weak heart qi, incomplete sweating, dry mouth and tongue, and pregnant women. This herb was previously unused because it greatly drains the qi of the heart and kidneys. For those constitutionally prone to deficiency syndromes, or who have suffered from long illness resulting in dual deficiency of qi and blood, using it may cause collapse of primordial qi, often without hope of rescue.
