【血竭】

[Dragon's Blood]
Sweet, salty, and neutral in nature. Enters the blood aspect of all Yin meridians. It relieves pain and promotes tissue regeneration, serving as a supreme herb for harmonizing blood (regulating blood circulation). Combined with Frankincense (Ruxiang), it treats slow convulsive wind causing spasms. Combined with Myrrh (Moyao), it dissipates blood masses in the abdomen.
It is the resin of Qilin Wood. When broken, it shows luster; the best quality can stain fingernails red through to the bottom. It must be ground separately; if ground together with other herbs, it will turn into flying dust. It is frequently used by patients with sores/ulcers to promote pus discharge without stopping.
[Asafoetida]
Pungent, bitter, and neutral in nature. Enters the Hand Shaoyin Heart Meridian. It expels pathogenic factors and drives away foulness. It treats syncope due to blood loss or stasis (Xueyun), dissipates gu poison, prevents night terrors, and treats consumptive disease (Laozai).
[Borneol]
Sweet and warm in nature. Enters the Foot Taiyin Spleen Meridian. Its nature is mild yet its aroma is penetrating; it unblocks meridians and reaches orifices. It harmonizes qi and blood, clears the mind/spirit, dispels evil influences, removes three types of parasites, prevents night terrors, and dissipates gu poison.
[Musk]
Pungent, bitter, and slightly hot in nature. Enters the qi aspect of the Hand Taiyin Lung Meridian. It opens qi obstruction, allowing wind pathogens to scatter internally; it unblocks obstruction between upper and lower jiao (Guan Ge), and guides heat outward for dispersion. It kills various parasites, treats convulsions and epilepsy (Jingxian), reduces tonsillar swelling (Ru'e), and treats tongue swelling. These effects are all due to its pungent dispersing power. With Musk, medicinal properties enter the bone marrow internally and travel through meridians externally. Combined with Phellodendron Bark (Chuanbai) and Ophiopogon Tuber (Maidong), it treats nocturnal emission and mouth ulcers. (Once the fire pathogen in the meridians is eliminated, symptoms like nocturnal emission and mental confusion will naturally disappear.)
Combined with pig blood, it helps disseminate toxin from smallpox/variolous eruptions.
The plum-blossom crystal form is the best. Contraindicated in cases of qi deficiency.
Strange symptom: Tongue protrudes five to six cun, untreatable by ordinary medicine; applying Borneol powder on the tongue retracts it immediately. This condition arises from extreme excess of Yang.
[Camphor]
This is the resin of the Camphor tree.
Pungent and hot in nature. It unblocks obstruction, facilitates stagnation, dispels dampness, and kills parasites. Endowed with the energy of Dragon Fire, it can generate fire within water. Combined with Cinnabar (Zhusha), applied to teeth, it treats toothache.
[Asafoetida]
Pungent and warm in nature. Enters the Foot Taiyin Spleen Meridian and Foot Yangming Stomach Meridian. It repels foul odors, breaks up mass formations (Pi Kuai), kills small insects, dissipates gu poison, transforms flesh accumulation (food stagnation), and directs foul qi downward. Made into pills with Cinnabar (Zhusha), it arrests malaria. Combined with Trichosanthes Seed (Louren), it treats dysentery. Combined with Trogopterus Dung (Wulingzhi) and dog bile, it treats dysphagia (Yige) and mass accumulations.
Asafoetida is the juice from the interior of the A Yu tree. Placed in a copper vessel overnight, the true product will appear white like mercury amalgam where it touches. Grind into fine powder, pass over a hot wine vessel, then use medicinally. Contraindicated in cases of pi-mass caused by deficient qi.
