Rehmanniae Radix (Dihuang) and Plantaginis Semen (Cheqian) serve as guiding herbs. It is incompatible with Sophorae Flavescentis Radix (Kushen), Celosiae Semen (Qingxiang), and Auricularia Auricula-Judae (Muer). It opposes Adenophorae Radix (Kuandong), potentially toxic plants referred to as Kufu, and Lagenariae Fructus Amarus (Kuhu). It is contraindicated with Crucian Carp (Jiyu). It can neutralize the toxicity of Concha Arcae (Shizhongru).
Sweet, neutral, slightly bitter, cool. Enters the Qi level of the Hand-Shaoyin (Heart) and Hand-Taiyin (Lung) meridians. Generates fluids in the Upper Jiao, clears thirst and irritability in the chest and diaphragm. Treats vomiting, stops hematemesis and epistaxis, resolves phlegm and cough, stops seminal emission, treats flaccidity and cold extremities, removes distension, dissipates stagnant Qi. Combined with Mume Fructus (Wumei), it treats dysentery with thirst. Combined with Rhinocerotis Cornu (Xijiao), it treats failure of lactation. Combined with Platycodonis Radix (Jiegeng), it clears stagnation of Lung Qi. Combined with Nelumbinis Folium (Heye), it clears Gallbladder Qi. Assisted by Rehmanniae Radix Preparata (Dihuang) and Equiseti Herba (Ejiao - *Note: Text says Ejiao which is Donkey-hide gelatin, likely a typo in source or specific context, but standard translation for Ejiao is Colla Corii Asini*), it moistens menstrual blood. Assisted by Sheng Dihuang and Fritillariae Thunbergii Bulbus (Chuanbei), it treats hematemesis and epistaxis. The heart of Ophiopogonis Tubera (Maimendong) can cause irritability; remove the heart, and avoid processing with iron. When used in cooling formulas, use raw. When used in tonifying formulas, soak in wine or steam with glutinous rice. Contraindicated in cases of Qi deficiency and stomach cold.
Also known as Allium victorialis var. purpureum (Luchong).
Sweet, cool. Enters the Hand-Taiyin and Foot-Taiyin meridians. Ascends to clear the chest and diaphragm, removing irritability and heat. Descends into the Yin aspect to treat dark urine. Calms the five Zang organs, resolves jaundice due to alcohol consumption. The flowers are also usable.
Root: Sweet, cool. Treats severe heat and massive bleeding, promotes urination and relieves strangury, stops leukorrhea, treats jaundice. Combined with Zingiberis Recens Rhizoma (Shengjiang), it treats bleeding after defecation. Paired with Cyperi Rotundi Rhizoma (Xicao - *Note: Text says Xicao, likely referring to a specific herb like Centipedae Herba or similar depending on local usage, but literally "Mat Grass", often interpreted as a specific folk herb or typo for something else. Given context of edema, might be distinct. I will translate literally as Mat Grass/Cyperi related if possible, but strictly "Xi Cao"*), it treats generalized edema. For alcoholic jaundice, take the juice. For hematemesis and epistaxis, add a little ginger juice. For mastitis, take with wine, and apply the dregs externally.
The root is called Suigu Zi.
Sweet, bland, cold. Leaves: Remove irritability and heat, promote urination, clear Heart fire. Roots: Can induce abortion and facilitate delivery.
This is not the leaf of Bambusa Tuldoides (Dan Zhu), but a different plant. Currently, pharmacies mostly use this herb. Although its functions are largely similar with minor differences, the root can break blood stasis, so it is contraindicated for pregnant women. This must be clearly recognized.
Scutellariae Radix (Huangqin) serves as a guiding herb.
Sweet, bland, cold. Slippery. Enters the Qi level of the Foot-Taiyin (Spleen) meridian. Moistens intestines and unblocks orifices, promotes lactation and facilitates childbirth, reduces swelling, relieves obstruction (Guan Ge), promotes urination and defecation. Roots and leaves have the same effects. Combined with Amomi Fructus (Sharen), it treats mastitis. Paired with Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix (Niuxi), it expels the placenta. Mixed with Porcine Fat (Zhuzhi), it relieves obstruction. (Referring to critical conditions where both urination and defecation are blocked, nearing death.) Mixed with human milk, it promotes bowel movements. Planted in autumn to overwinter, producing seeds in spring, named Malvae Semen (Dongkuizi), used medicinally. Spring-planted seeds are not suitable for medicinal use. Contraindicated in cases of Qi deficiency with sinking and Spleen deficiency with slippery intestines. Strange case: A person's hands and feet suddenly grew abnormally long with inverted flesh spicules like cones, causing unbearable pain. Eating Malva vegetables cured them.
