A scholar named Chen Qizhong, after falling ill, would vomit immediately upon eating or drinking. Each meal had to be completely vomited before stopping. Although he desired food, he would repeat the vomiting after eating. For over a year, his body became extremely emaciated and weak, and various medicines were ineffective. Everyone claimed it was a fatal condition. Upon examining his pulse, I said: This is a symptom of stomach deficiency following the recovery from Shanghan (Cold Damage), due to not taking Buzhong Yiqi Tang (Tonify the Middle and Augment the Qi Decoction) for regulation. Using Dingxiang Zhuyu Tang (Clove and Evodia Decoction) with modifications, after two doses, his digestion normalized; after ten doses, he was fully recovered.
Prescription:
Dingxiang (Caryophylli Flos), Zhi Gancao (Prepared Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix), Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma), Renshen (Ginseng Radix), Huangqi (Astragali Radix), Wuzhuyu (Evodiae Fructus), Caodoukou (Amomi Fructus Rotundus), Dangguishen (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma) (each 6 fen); Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex), Rougui (Cinnamomi Cortex) (each 4 fen).
Add two black dates, one bowl and a half of water, decoct until seven-tenths remain.
He Daozun (courtesy name Dunji, pseudonym Yinbo, formerly acting as Prefect of Zhangnan, later acting as Prefect of Funing)
In the spring of Gengyin year, a friend Wang staying in my residence contracted Shanghan in the summer of the previous year. After recovering, he developed Nue (Intermittent Fever). By winter, although the Nue subsided, he suffered unbearable headaches, extreme emaciation, inability to eat, and insomnia day and night for several months, with no effect from medicine. Upon examining his pulse, I said: This is because the Shanghan pathogen was not cleared properly, leading to urinary retention. The accumulated fire could not discharge, and its toxicity rose and clustered at the vertex of the head. I gave him herbs to promote urination. After one dose, he slept; after several doses, he recovered.
Prescription:
Sheng Dihuang (Rehmanniae Radix), Mutong (Akebiae Caulis), Puhuang (Typhae Pollen), Cheqianzi (Plantaginis Semen), Tongcao (Tetrapanacis Medulla), Guiwei (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Baifuling (Poria), Zexie (Alismatis Rhizoma), Binglang (Arecae Semen), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma).
Zheng Daozun (courtesy name Qing, pseudonym Jiechen, Military Intendant of Fujian) suffered from toothache since youth, so severe it was unbearable. The pain radiated to the shoulder, causing swelling there. Various physicians diagnosed it as Fire and used cooling herbs, which worsened the pain. It persisted for over five years. In the spring of Gengyin year, upon examining his pulse, I said: This is Wind invading the Liver with Dampness. One should first disperse Wind, then descend Fire. Effect would be seen in a few days. Prefect Zheng abstained from alcohol due to the toothache; drinking triggered the pain. I prescribed powdered medicine for three doses, using wine to induce sweating. Drinking more reduced the pain, and the condition gradually improved.
Powdered Medicine Prescription:
Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix, 1 qian), Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata, 1 qian), Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba, 5 fen).
Grind into fine powder, divide into three doses. Mix with good aged wine and take hot. Induce profuse sweating as the goal.

One bowl and a half of water, decoct until seven-tenths remain.
Zhou Daozun (courtesy name Zhihan, pseudonym Shen Gong, Prefect of Zhangnan) suffered from a hard mass like a fist in the precordial region. Upon waking and attempting to rise, he felt pressure as if someone were pressing on him. His spirit was restless, and digestion was difficult. This lasted for years with no effect from medicine. Upon examining his pulse, I said: This is not caused by Qi stagnation. Previous doctors mistook epigastric fullness and bloating for excessive Spleen Qi, which was an error! This was due to unresolved emotional distress. When seeking relief through sexual intercourse during times of annoyance, he felt something in the chest beforehand, and after intercourse, a tangible mass formed. This is called "Depressed Fire." He was cured after taking pills for half a month.
Pill Prescription:
Zhe Bazhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma, 2 liang, soaked overnight in rice wash water, stir-fried with old wall earth to remove oil), Bai Doukou (Amomi Fructus Rotundus, 1 liang), Maimendong (Ophiopogonis Radix, 2 liang, dehearted, baked on new tile), Qingpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Viride, 1 liang), Zhishi (Aurantii Fructus, stir-fried with flour, 1 liang), Beijiejie (Sinapis Semen, stir-fried, 1 liang), Chuan Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma, processed with Wuzhuyu, 1 liang), Sharen (Amomi Fructus, lightly stir-fried, 5 qian), Nanmuxiang (Agastachis Herba, 5 qian), Chuan Nannpu (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex, stir-fried with ginger, 1 liang), Baifuling (Poria, 1 liang), Renshen (Ginseng Radix, 1 liang), Digupi (Lycii Cortex, 1 liang), Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma, 1 liang, soaked overnight in rice wash water, stir-fried), Zhimu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma, 1 liang), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 5 qian), Gan Gouqi (Lycii Fructus, 1 liang).
Grind into powder. Use old rice porridge made with mint leaf tea to form pills the size of wutong seeds. Take 2 qian on an empty stomach with light salt water.
Governor Tong asked me to examine a general officer. His symptoms were dizziness, weakness, spasm of limbs, and inability to eat, with no effect from medicine. Upon careful pulse examination, I said: There is stagnant blood in the chest, likely due to injury. If this blood can be expelled, the illness will heal immediately; otherwise, it will be difficult to treat. Using powdered medicine, after one dose he felt worse; after two doses he wanted to vomit; after three doses, he spat out a mouthful of purple blood, followed by six or seven pieces of black blood. The illness healed immediately.
Powdered Medicine Prescription:
Sheng Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, powder, 2 qian), Sheng Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix, powder, 2 qian), Sheng Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, powder, 2 qian), Sheng Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma, powder, 1 qian).

He Fengyu, a merchant from Suzhou, had been ill for over ten days with yellow eyes, swollen body, chest congestion, and inability to breathe freely. During episodes of distension and discomfort, his eyes rolled up and remained fixed for an hour. Physicians did not diagnose the condition correctly and used herbs to broaden the chest and regulate Qi, which only worsened the condition. Upon examining his pulse, I said: This is Shanghan heat pathogen transmitting inward, a critical condition. Delaying further renders medicine useless. Urgently obtain a black-boned white-feathered rooster. Remove internal organs, cut open, and spread a mixture of Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium) and Zhike (Aurantii Fructus) powder (each 5 fen) on the chicken's abdomen and chest. Immediately paste the cut side onto the patient's abdomen. After half an hour, slight rumbling in the abdomen indicated the evil pathogen moving, bringing immediate relief. He recovered after three days of decoction.
Prescription:
Chuan Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma, stir-fried with ginger juice, 1 qian), Zhimu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma, 1 qian), Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum, 3 qian), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix, 1 qian), Shanzhi (Gardeniae Fructus, stir-fried with child's urine, 8 fen), Maimendong (Ophiopogonis Radix, dehearted, 8 fen), Wuweizi (Schisandrae Fructus, 8 fen), Xiangchi (Fermented Soybean, 1 he).
One bowl and a half of water, decoct until eight-tenths remain.
A general officer under Admiral Yang had been ill for a long time without recovery. It was early September, and the boat was very hot. He suffered unbearable distension and discomfort, unable to even drink rice water, nearing death. Upon examining his pulse, I said: This is not a Heat syndrome. The Wind pathogen was not released via sweating, and it caused distension by exploiting deficiency. Cooling herbs worsened it. Even warming herbs taken warm would not help. One must use decoction, cooled down, and take it in several doses. He recovered after several doses.
Prescription:
Maimendong (Ophiopogonis Radix, dehearted, 2 qian), Baijili (Tribuli Fructus, stir-fried, de-spined, 2 qian), Sheng Dihuang (Rehmanniae Radix, 2 qian), Baifuling (Poria, 2 qian), Renshen (Ginseng Radix, 5 fen).
Use four bowls of water, decoct until two bowls and a half remain. Let cool, and take occasionally.
A general officer under Minister Zu had been ill for over a month with dizziness, mouth ulcers, sore throat, and diarrhea. Occasionally, dysentery occurred for one or two days, then resolved, only to return after a few days. Throat swelling prevented eating; any food intake led to immediate vomiting, and medicine exacerbated vomiting. Upon examining his pulse, I said: This is extreme deficiency. Kidney Water cannot ascend, and Spleen Earth cannot perform its function. One should administer herbs to tonify Essence and strengthen the Spleen. The sore throat and mouth ulcers are due to deficient Fire and are not a major concern. I prepared a pill prescription. He recovered completely in ten days.
Pill Prescription:
Renshen (Ginseng Radix, 1 liang), Zhusha (Cinnabar, water-triturated, 3 qian), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, soaked overnight in rice wash water, stir-fried with old wall earth, 2 liang), Baifuling (Poria, peeled, 1 liang), Huangqi (Astragali Radix, honey-roasted, 1 liang), Baishaoyao (Paeoniae Radix Alba, 1 liang), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, washed with wine, 1 liang), Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, 1 liang).
Form pills with refined honey, size of wutong seeds. Take three times daily, one qian each time with plain boiled water.
A general officer under Minister Li contracted Shanghan with headache, fever, aversion to cold, and generalized body pain. Repeated attacks with no sweating, symptoms unchanged but condition worsening daily. Physicians applied releasing exterior herbs, leading to mania and excruciating abdominal pain. Upon examining his pulse, I said: This is a critical condition of Yang deficiency. How can one sweat with deficient Yang? I prepared a formula, and he responded immediately.
Prescription:
Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma), Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus), Baishao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), Shu Fu (Prepared Aconiti Lateralis Radix), Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix) (equal parts), Renshen (Ginseng Radix, 6 fen), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 3 fen).
Add one black date, one bowl and a half of water, decoct until seven-tenths remain.
A general officer under Minister Chen suffered from continuous bleeding during defecation for over ten years. Mild abdominal pain preceded bleeding, and pain ceased when bleeding stopped. Various medicines failed, leaving him severely emaciated. Upon examining his pulse, I said: This is Spleen Dampness drawing out Heat. I prepared a pill prescription. Once Spleen Qi is strong, Blood returns to its vessels, and the disease cures.
Prescription:
Shengdi (Rehmanniae Radix, 3 liang, soaked in wine for three nights, boiled in ample wine for one day until black and soft), Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, 1 liang), Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma, 2 liang, soaked in rice wash water for seven days, stir-fried), Chuan Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma, 2 liang, processed with Wuzhuyu), Huoxiangye (Pogostemonis Herba, 3 liang), Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma, 2 liang), Chuan Nannpu (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex, 2 liang, stir-fried), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, 3 liang, soaked overnight in rice wash water, stir-fried with old wall earth), Yiren (Coicis Semen, 3 liang, stir-fried), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, 2 liang, washed with wine), Huaihua (Sophorae Flos, 3 liang).
Form pills with refined honey, size of wutong seeds. Take 2 qian with plain boiled water every morning, and 1 qian before bed.
A servant in the household of Ma Chengyuan (courtesy name Biao, Garrison Commander of Pucheng) experienced nightly fever and daytime chills. His aversion to cold was unusual: seeing someone holding a fan caused his pores to shiver; hearing the word "wind" caused jaw locking and inability to speak. He could eat at night but refused food during the day. Physicians used heating agents, worsening the condition. Upon examining his pulse, I said: This is extreme internal Heat with external fear of cold, resulting from contracting Cold and failing to release the exterior, forming Stomach Fire. I prepared medicine, and he recovered after two doses.
Powdered Medicine Prescription:
Yiyuan San (Benefiting Origin Powder, 5 qian), Chuan Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma, 3 qian, stir-fried with ginger juice), Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, 2 qian).
Grind into powder, divide into two doses. Swallow with rice soup.
A friend, Lin Daniann, after recovering from eye swelling, suffered from dim vision. Sudden pain would occur and then cease, recurring after a while. Upon examining his pulse, I said: This was caused by excessive use of cooling herbs, blocking the orifices and drying up Blood. Although the major illness passed, Blood could not nourish the orifices, leading to blurred vision. Blood is constantly generated, but the orifices close again when trying to open, causing sudden pain. I prepared a formula, and he recovered after three doses.
Prescription:
Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Gouqi (Lycii Fructus), Huangqi (Astragali Radix), Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma), Baifuling (Poria), Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma), Manjingzi (Viticis Semen) (equal parts), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma).
Take after meals.
A friend, Huang Hansu, returned from climbing a mountain on the ninth day. He suddenly had mild abdominal pain. Physicians gave Xiangsha (Aucklandiae and Amomi) herbs, increasing the pain. Further medication made the pain unbearable. By the fifth or sixth day, he was near death from pain and could not speak. Upon examining his pulse, I said: The pulse is normal; there must be a toxic substance in the abdomen. I prepared a formula, and he recovered after one dose.
Powdered Medicine Prescription:
Ming Xionghuang (Realgar, 1 qian), Moyao (Myrrha, 7 fen), Ruxiang (Olibanum, 7 fen), Shexiang (Moschus, 2 fen), Baizhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix, 1 qian), Zaojiaoci (Gleditsiae Spina, 7 fen).
Grind into powder. Seal in five jin of aged wine. Drink freely, hot or cold, until cured.
A friend, Yu Chengbo, suffered from a Yin syndrome. Knowing some medicine, he first took Lizhong Tang (Regulate the Middle Decoction), then abdominal pain and cold Qi worsened. He took Sanjian Tang and other heating herbs. His scrotum retracted, and he lost speech ability, facing danger. Upon examining his pulse, I said: One must first unblock the Qi. When Qi flows, Yang rises. The method to raise Yang is secret and does not rely solely on Tianxiong or Fuzi. I prepared a formula, and he recovered after one dose.
Prescription:
Wugu Xiongji Zaofen (Dry feces of black-boned rooster, 5 qian), Shufen (Mouse feces, 5 qian), Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, 3 qian), Jiucui (Allium Tuberosum, 5 qian).
Stir-fry chicken and mouse feces until yellow. Add Chenpi and stir-fry together. Pour in one bowl of aged wine, boil briefly. Add Jiucui and take hot.
Wang Fengxi, a merchant from Huizhou, suffered unbearable abdominal pain for three or four days after illness onset. Medicines failed. One day, pain intensified, eyes stared straight, and he collapsed suddenly. Upon examining his pulse, I said: This is Shanghan with Blood accumulation. I had him drink half a bowl of well water. The pain subsided slightly, he could speak, and said the cold water felt extremely relieving. He recovered after taking purgative medicine.
Prescription:
Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus, 1 qian), Zhishi (Aurantii Fructus, 7 fen), Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, 2 qian), Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum, 1 qian), Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix, 8 fen), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 4 fen).
Add two slices of ginger, one date, one bowl of water, decoct until eight-tenths remain.
A friend, Fang Yuxuan, suffered from headache and insomnia day and night. Only drinking liquids provided slight relief; eating caused unbearable pain. Seeking medical help for years yielded no results. Upon examining his pulse, I said: This is Evil Fire clustering upward. Liquids provide slight relief because they belong to Yin, while drinks represent Yang Qi; Yang entering disperses Yin. Decoctions were ineffective. I used a washing treatment for five days, and he recovered.
Washing Prescription:
Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix, 2 liang), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 2 liang), Bohe (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba, 1 liang), Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma, 1 liang).
Make one dose. Use six bowls of water, decoct until two bowls remain. Soak cloth in the liquid, apply hot to the head. If cool, reheat and wash again. From morning to evening, wash for three hours. Do not wash at night to preserve Yang Qi. Five treatments resulted in full recovery.
Tong Qigu (courtesy name Yuxiu, pseudonym Xianzhai, Drum Major General) caught a severe cold in the winter of Jichou year. Misusing medicine led to intense heat, delirium, removing clothes and kicking off blankets, abdominal distension, chest pain, inability to eat, and unconsciousness, becoming a critical condition. Upon examining his pulse, I said: This is internal damage from excessive diet and labor. I used one dose of medicine to purge toxic heat, followed by a Shaoyang (Half-Exterior Half-Interior) formula. After two doses, he developed Nue (Intermittent Fever) and gradually recovered.
Prescription:
Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma), Zhike (Aurantii Fructus), Chishao (Paeoniae Radix Rubra), Poxiao (Natrii Sulfas).

Secondary Prescription:
Renshen (Ginseng Radix), Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Beimu (Fritillariae Bulbus), Zhimu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma), Fuling (Poria).
Decoct as before.
Dai Yifu from Putian, a friend, suffered from blindness for over two years. Medicines failed. In the spring of Gengyin year, upon examining his pulse, I said: This is due to damaging Heart Blood through overwork. The Liver Wood governs tendons; Blood invading tendons causes red veins to invade the eyes. Over time, Kidney deficiency increases, Liver Wood generates Wind, causing endless tearing and worsening darkness. I prepared a formula. After five days, he could see objects; after ten days, his vision restored.
Prescription:
Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Jingjie (Schizonepetae Herba), Bohe (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba), Jiabaiju (Chrysanthemi Flos, 1 qian each), Shijueming (Concha Argois), Chantui (Cicadae Periostracum), Sheng Dadi (Rehmanniae Radix, Baifuling (Poria) (each 8 fen), Renshen (Ginseng Radix, 5 fen), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 3 fen).
One bowl of water, decoct until seven-tenths remain.
Deputy Commander Zou (courtesy name Bike, pseudonym Pinzhi, Hall Attendant) suffered from dizziness, yellow-red eyes, limb weakness, and inability to eat. Physicians used tonics, worsening the condition. Upon examining his pulse, I said: Wind pathogen is not cleared; how can tonics be used? Red eyes and dizziness indicate Fire; limb weakness indicates pathogen entering tendons and collaterals; inability to eat indicates Qi obstruction from tonics. I prepared a formula. He recovered after four doses.
Prescription:
Bohe (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba), Jingjie (Schizonepetae Herba), Niubangzi (Arctii Fructus), Maimendong (Ophiopogonis Radix, dehearted), Dantanxing (Arisaematis Cum Bile), Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex), Zhimu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma), Ganju (Chrysanthemi Flos), Fuling (Poria) (equal parts), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 4 fen).
Add two slices of ginger, one bowl and a half of water, decoct until seven-tenths remain.
Deputy Commander Wang (courtesy name Jin, pseudonym Cuizhi, City Defender of Fujian) initially contracted Shanghan. I prescribed medicine, and he recovered after two doses. Due to dietary indiscretion, he developed Nue (Intermittent Fever). Continued indiscretion worsened the condition significantly. Physicians, noting the chronic nature, suggested tonifying deficiency and strengthening the Spleen. Upon examining his pulse, I said: This is Shanghan relapse due to labor. After Nue, Blood and Qi are unstable, with residual Heat remaining. Combined with overeating, anger, physical, and mental exertion, Xiao Chaihu Tang (Minor Bupleuri Decoction) with modifications cured him after several doses.
Prescription:
Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix), Renshen (Ginseng Radix), Banxiaqu (Pinelliae Fermentatum), Chuan Nannpu (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Baifuling (Poria), Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Zexie (Alismatis Rhizoma), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma).
Decoct normally, add roasted ginger.
Deputy Commander Jiang (courtesy name Biao; pseudonym □□, Hall Attendant) suffered from aversion to cold and wind. Despite gathering strong fires in the room, he felt no heat; covering himself with multiple quilts, he felt no warmth. Physicians used acrid-hot herbs, worsening the condition. Upon examining his pulse, I said: Internal Heat is extreme but cannot be cooled; External Cold is extreme but cannot be dispersed with acrid herbs. I used powdered medicine for the extreme Heat, taken with wine. Then, I used exterior-releasing herbs to induce sweating. I ordered the removal of fires and blankets. He felt refreshed and recovered after four doses.
Powdered Medicine Prescription:
Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata, processed, skin removed; half wrapped in bread and baked, half raw), Rougui (Cinnamomi Cortex), Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma) (each 3 qian), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 2 qian).

A friend, Wu Pixian, after a long illness, suffered only from vomiting, nausea, and inability to eat. Limbs were fatigued, night sweats occurred, and he wasted away daily. Medicines failed.
Upon examining his pulse, I modified Wen Shen Tang (Warm the Kidney Decoction) into powder. Taking one dose daily showed immediate effect.
Prescription:
Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix), Mahuanggen (Ephedrae Herba Radix) (each 4 qian), Baifuling (Poria, steamed with human milk), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, soil-stir-fried), Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex, wine-stir-fried), Zhuling (Polyporus, wine-stir-fried), Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma), Zexie (Alismatis Rhizoma, stir-fried), Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Shenqu (Massa Medicata Fermentata) (each 6 qian).
