[Postpartum Care Taboos and Prescriptions]
Do not lie in bed immediately. Immediately after delivery, one must not lie down on the bed at once. Quickly cover the chamber pot, or sit on the lid of the pot, or on a soft chair, close your eyes and sit quietly for a moment. The back must be supported firmly against something solid, without shaking, to avoid dizziness. Meanwhile, have someone spread coarse paper on the bed, soften the paper by rubbing it, and place it on the surface (bed board or mat). Only after spreading is complete can you slowly help the mother onto the bed and sit her up leaning against the bedding.
Do not speak immediately. Immediately after delivery, one should remain quiet and think little, avoiding speech to conserve and nourish Shen Qi (Spiritual Energy). Especially avoid conversing with men or women, as fear of emotional agitation from love or hate may cause significant illness. However, many people prefer sons. If a male fetus is born, answer affirmatively to bring joy to the mother. Experienced midwives often falsely report a female fetus as male; husbands may also pretend to prefer girls to soothe the mother's heart.
Do not sleep immediately. Immediately after delivery, use soft cotton quilts for padding, and add soft pillows at the head of the bed. Help the mother onto the bed and keep her sitting for one day and one night before lying down. Do not lie down early to prevent blood stasis. After getting into bed, have someone stroke smoothly from the chest and abdomen down to below the navel to ensure all foul blood is expelled. This prevents various ailments. Perform this seven or eight times daily for three days, then stop. Keep legs and knees open; do not extend feet between legs, which would hinder the expulsion of stagnant blood.
Do not eat meat immediately. Immediately after delivery, the Spleen and Stomach are weak. Only fried rice porridge mixed with brown sugar should be given frequently in small amounts. For three days, absolutely no fish, meat, chicken, or duck should be eaten, nor hard foods. Delaying the consumption of meat and greasy food ensures not only the mother's stability but also that the infant's belly becomes full when nursing.
Do not drink alcohol immediately. Immediately after delivery, alcohol must be avoided. Because the mother's Zang-Fu organs are just weakened, hot wine entering the stomach will certainly cause fainting. After six or seven days, a little light wine may be given to dispel Wind pathogen, nourish Blood and Qi, expel lochia stagnation, and promote milk flow.
Do not eat salty food immediately. Milk is formed from Blood and Qi. Postpartum, salty flavors should be avoided because salt can stop bleeding and reduce milk production, and induce coughing. If lochia has not cleared, eating salty or sour foods early will not only reduce milk but also cause abdominal pain and fever/chills. After six or seven days, small amounts of salty food like dried white fish or ham may be consumed.
Do not strain the mind. Postpartum, one must absolutely avoid mental strain and anxious thinking; this is especially critical within ten days.
Do not engage in needlework. If postpartum and not yet a month old, forcing oneself to get out of bed and move may not seem damaging initially, but later will definitely become "Ru Lao" (postpartum consumptive disease). Everyone knows the mother should rest, but regarding needlework, one does not feel the fatigue, thinking it harmless. Little do they know, this often leads to dim vision before old age or sour tears. One must beware of this.
Do not disdain blood stains. Within ten days postpartum, one must absolutely not disdain blood stains and rush to wash or wipe. Exposure to wind can lead to severe hemorrhage ("Blood Collapse"), causing great harm. Moreover, much blood was lost during delivery, making meridians and vessels empty and sparse, susceptible to Wind-Cold invasion. A slight lack of caution can result in spasms and bi-syndrome, becoming a lifelong affliction. Be extremely cautious.
Do not rush to comb hair or wash. Combing hair and washing feet postpartum may cause Blood and Qi to sink downward. Undressing for bathing makes one susceptible to Wind-Cold. Scraping the tongue, brushing teeth, and bending forward are also contraindicated, as they can lead to Blood rebellion and Blood Fainting. Even if washing the lower body, raw water must not be used; Mugwort Herb Decoction (Yimucao Tang) is best as it dispels Cold-Dampness and Wind-Heat. Bathing, even with Mugwort Herb Decoction, is absolutely forbidden. (From *Shi Shi Bao Chan Xin Fa*)
Uterus prolapse after delivery: Fresh crucian carp, boiled, baked, and ground fine. Apply half to the protruding uterus, (and take half with wine), and it will retract immediately. (From *Tai Chan Liang Fang*)

Postpartum chest oppression leading to death: Use dozens of jin of Safflower (Honghua), boil in a large pot. When boiling, put the broth into a cedar wood bucket. Place a support inside, and have the patient lie on it. As the steam cools, replace with hot broth for fumigation. Consciousness returns shortly. (From *Yao Luofu Ji Yan Fang*)
Postpartum continuous nasal bleeding with black gas appearing around mouth and nose: Tie red velvet thread and five to ten hairs from the top of the woman's head tightly around the joint of the right middle finger. Bleeding stops immediately. (From *Da Sheng Quan Bian*)
Postpartum tongue protrusion cannot retract: Apply Cinnabar powder to it. Throw a basin or jar to make a falling sound to startle her; the tongue will retract. (From *Jingyan Mifang*)
Postpartum intestinal itching: Place a needlework bag under the sleeping mattress. Do not let others know; it will heal. (From *Tong Shou Lu*)
Postpartum coughing, wheezing, and gasping for three days, nearly dying: Cassia Bark (Guixin) (5 qian), Ginger Juice (Sanhe). Decoct to obtain two he. First, moxa the back until hot, rub to generate heat, then apply medicine thoroughly. (Same source)
Postpartum vulva hard as stone: Seven Green Fish Gallbladders (crucian carp gallbladder can substitute). Burn Silk Cotton (Siamian) until charred but retaining nature, grind to powder. Mix with gallbladder juice and apply using duck feather quill. Stops immediately. (From *Qi Fang Lei Bian*)
Postpartum yellow foul-smelling fluid discharge from vulva with severe pain: Burn mulberry silkworm cocoon (2-3 qian) until charred but retaining nature, grind to powder. Mix with wine and apply with duck feather quill. The toxin exits naturally. (Same source)
Postpartum vulvar swelling: One sheng of Cnidium Fruit (Shechuangzi), stir-fry until very hot, wrap in cloth, and apply hot compress to affected area. (From *Wan Bing Hui Chun*)
Postpartum vaginal prolapse: Iron furnace soot (Zichen) and Sheep Fat. Mix evenly, wrap in cloth, heat, compress, and push back inside. (From *Ben Cao Gang Mu*)
Postpartum vaginal eversion: Decoct Purple Perilla Leaf (Zelan Ye). Fumigate first, then wash two or three times. Then add Alum (Kufan) and wash again for relief. (From *Ji Jian Fang*)
Postpartum vulvar paralysis hard like an egg: Decoct Cnidium Fruit (Shechuangzi) and fumigate/wash. Heals. (From *Yiliang Li Shi Kan Fang*)
Postpartum cold-induced abdominal pain: Stir-fry Mugwort Leaf (Aiye) until hot and apply to navel. (Same source)
Postpartum Cold invasion: Evodia Fruit (Wuzhuyu), Perilla Leaf (Zisu), Scallion Head. Decoct. In a sealed room, place in a bucket, fumigate when hot. Then wash. Very effective. (From *Yi Zong Shuo Yue*)
Postpartum urinary retention with abdominal fullness: Apply hot salt to the navel. Bind a bunch of scallion whites, cut off both ends leaving one cun thick section, place on salt, and moxa. Heat enters abdomen, urination flows freely. (From *Ming Yi Zhi Zhang*)
Postpartum dysentery with vomiting: Mash one field snail. Add Evodia Fruit (2 fen) and Musk (1 li), grind to fine powder. Apply to navel. Vomiting stops, and dysentery gradually clears. (From *Shi Bao Mi Lu*)
Postpartum Blood Collapse: Blood collapse is a deficiency syndrome, primarily treated by tonifying righteousness. This is due to chronic weakness, compounded by exertion during delivery, leading to excessive blood loss, resulting in fainting and unconsciousness. Mild deficiency wakes shortly. Severe deficiency leads to immediate death from exhaustion. Observe pale face, open mouth, spontaneous sweating, and cold limbs; this indicates deficiency collapse. Life or death depends on moments. Do not lay flat. Have one person hold the hair, urgently use silk or old clothes to tightly close the birth canal. Instruct knowledgeable women to bend knees and press against the area to prevent Qi leakage from below. Wait until slightly recovered, then treat medically. If mistaken for Blood Fainting and treated with blood-moving herbs, death is hastened. (From *Tai Chan Shen Xiao Fang*)
Postpartum Blood Fainting: Blood fainting is an excess syndrome, primarily treated by removing stasis. This is due to retained lochia, chest fullness and urgency, coma, clenched jaw, and unconsciousness. Do not lay flat. Urgently take one to two jin of Chinese chives, mash, put in a teapot, pour boiling vinegar into the pot, cover the spout, direct the spout towards the mother's nostrils, allowing vinegar vapor to enter to wake her. If not waking, burn dry lacquer smoke for inhalation. Or urgently pinch Renzhong acupoint, pull hair from vertex, administer ginger juice and child's urine to wake. (Same source)
Postpartum taboos on crying, anger, laughter, and fright: Postpartum, all Zang-Fu organs are deficient. Crying damages Lungs, anger damages Liver, laughter damages Spirit, fright damages Heart. All are strictly prohibited. In short, childbirth easily causes illness, but also easily allows removal of illness. With careful regulation, even chronic diseases can be fully cured, providing lasting benefit. (From *Ji Yin Zuan Yao*)
Postpartum taboo on early intercourse: After one hundred days, when Qi is abundant and Blood sufficient, intercourse may resume. Otherwise, it must be after forty-nine days. Often see fools having intercourse before a month is complete. This not only causes serious illness in the woman but also harms the man. Be cautious. (From *Fu Ren Liang Fang*)
