Cough Moxibustion/Fumigation Method: Take Realgar (Realgar, 雄黄) (one tael), mix with wax paper to form rolls, making ten tubes. Burn and inhale the smoke until vomiting occurs, then stop when vomiting ceases. Perform fumigation once a day; consume only white porridge during this period. After seven days, nourish the body with mutton soup. (From *Qianjin Fang*)
For chronic cough lasting up to thirty years: Take Datura seed (Daturae Fructus, 莨菪子), Costus root (Saussureae Radix, 木香), and Realgar (Realgar, 雄黄) in equal parts. Grind into powder. Apply sheep fat onto green paper, sprinkle the powder on top, roll into a tube, burn, and inhale the smoke. (From *Cui Shi Zuan Yao*)
For persistent cough in the elderly: Take old dust from thatched roofs exposed to smoke for many years, mix with Orpiment (Orpiment, 石黄), Farfara flower (Farfarae Flos, 款冬花), and women's menstrual band as powder. Mix with water, apply to thatch, let dry, insert into a bamboo tube, burn, and inhale the smoke. This is effective without exception. (From *Bencao Shiyi*)
For persistent long-term cough: Burn Farfara flower (Farfarae Flos, 款冬花) (two taels) in a windless place. Inhale the smoke through a pen tube and swallow it, immediately pressing it down with food. (From *Zhengzhi Huibu*)
For severe cough nearing death: Peel slippery elm bark (Ulmaceae Cortex, 榆皮) into strips finger-thick and over a chi long. Insert into the throat, frequently moving it in and out. Pus and blood should be expectorated, leading to recovery. (From *Gujin Luyan*)
For wind-cold persistent cough not cured by other methods: Take Arisaema rhizome (Arisaematis Rhizoma, 天南星), Farfara flower (Farfarae Flos, 款冬花), Gypsum fibrosum (Gypsum, 鹅管石 - *Note: Context implies a specific stone or mineral, often associated with respiratory issues in ancient texts, literal translation used*), Petasites leaf (Petasitidis Folium, 佛耳草), and Realgar (Realgar, 雄黄) in equal parts. Grind into powder and mix with mugwort. Place a thick slice of ginger on the tongue, then place the mugwort mixture on top and burn. It is ideal if the smoke enters the throat. (From *Yizong Bidu*)
For upward qi cough with abdominal fullness and emaciation: Boil Catalpa leaves (Catalpae Folium, 楸叶) (three dou) in water (three dou) for thirty boils. Strain the dregs and decoct until it can be formed into pills the size of dates. Insert into the lower orifice (anus) using a tube for immediate cure. (From *Haishang Fang*)
For all types of consumptive cough with chest and diaphragm stuffiness: Take Gypsum fibrosum (Gypsum, 鹅管石), Realgar (Realgar, 雄黄), Petasites leaf (Petasitidis Folium, 佛耳草), and Farfara flower (Farfarae Flos, 款冬花) in equal parts. Grind into powder. Use one qian per dose, burn on an incense burner, and inhale the smoke into the throat via a tube, twice daily. (From *Xuanming Fang*)
Huo Luan with muscle cramps and abdominal pain: Boon cotton wadding in vinegar (Vinegar, 苦酒) and wrap around the affected area. (From *Shenghui Fang*)
For severe abdominal pain due to Huo Luan: Wrap a packet of fried salt and apply heat compress (moxibustion-like heat therapy) to the epigastrium and abdomen to penetrate the Qi. Apply another packet to the back; the pain will cease shortly. (From *Jianyi Fang*)
For Huo Luan with muscle cramps extending inward, where no remedy seems available: Rub boiled blue cloth soaked in rice vinegar (Rice Vinegar, 米醋) on the area; replace when cool. (From *Qianjin Fang*)
For Huo Luan with muscle cramps entering the abdomen, life-threatening: Crush small garlic (Allii Sativi Bulbus, 小蒜) and salt (Salt, 盐) (one tael each). Apply to the umbilicus. Perform moxibustion (seven moxa cones); the condition stops immediately. (From *Shengji Zonglu*)
For Huo Luan with muscle cramps, cold body but slight warmth in the epigastrium: Mix ground Cinnabar (Cinnabaris, 朱砂) (two taels) with beeswax (Beeswax, 蜡) (three taels) to make pills. Burn them in a cage for fumigation, covering tightly to prevent smoke leakage. Also light a fire under the bed to keep the abdomen slightly warm. After some time, sweating will occur, and the patient will regain consciousness. (From *Waitai Miyao*)
For Huo Luan with muscle cramps, near death, pulse absent, but warmth remains in the abdomen: Fill the umbilicus with salt and perform moxibustion (seven cones) on the salt. The patient will revive. (From *Qiankun Mi Yun*)
Emergency treatment for Huo Luan: For muscle cramps, pull the male patient's genitals or the female patient's breasts laterally with hands. Then fill the umbilicus with salt and burn moxa without limiting the number of cones. Even if clinically dead, if there is residual heat in the chest, revival is immediate. Grind raw garlic (Allii Sativi Bulbus, 生蒜) and apply to the soles of the feet; this is also effective for critical cases with internal cramping. Wash with a decoction of Polygonum multiflorum stem (Polygoni Multiflori Caulis, 大蓼 - *Note: Likely refers to a specific herb, literal translation used*). For sudden severe abdominal pain, stir-fry about one jin of salt until hot, wrap in paper and gauze, press firmly on the chest and abdomen, and frequently apply heat. Revival occurs when heat penetrates. (From *Zhengzhi Huibu*)
Treatment for Dry Huo Luan: Dry Huo Luan presents with sudden abdominal distension and colic, inability to vomit or defecate, resembling possession. In moments, the patient becomes comatose. This is caused by extreme stagnation of Spleen Qi failing to disperse, leading to internal heat disturbance (commonly known as "Intestinal Colic Sha"). Dip hemp fibers in oil and scrape the arms, or prick the inner knee/wrist areas until purple blood emerges from red vessels, or prick the fingertips until blood flows; recovery is immediate. If muscle cramps persist, decoct Quince (Chaenomelis Fructus, 木瓜) and Salt (Salt, 盐) in hot water and soak the feet. (From *Shibian Liangfang*)
Yin and Yang treatments for Intestinal Colic Sha: Observe unbearable intestinal pain. Yin Sha presents with abdominal pain, cold limbs, and red spots on the body. Light a rush (Junci Medulla, 灯草) dipped in oil and burn the spots to cure. Yang Sha presents with intestinal pain and warm limbs. Prick the fingers near the nail beds at a depth of approximately one-and-a-half fen; bleeding brings relief. First, massage the arms downward to gather stagnant blood into the fingertips before pricking. (From *Jijian Fang*)
Appendix: Two formulas by Wang Kentang: Wang Kentang stated: In Huo Luan, pathogenic factors dominate while healthy Qi is lost. During this chaotic state, one must strictly avoid Ginger Decoction (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens Decoctum, 姜汤), Rice Soup (Oryzae Sativae Decoctum, 米汤), and soups containing Smoked Plum (Mume Fructus, 乌梅) or Plum Sauce (Mume Fructus Condimentum, 梅酱). Ingestion leads to immediate death. Even hot water should be avoided; strict prohibition is necessary. Abdominal pain with tightness like stone and cold Qi condensation indicates injury from sexual exhaustion. Do not mistake this for Huo Luan and do not administer cold water or tonics, which cause immediate death. Instead, use formulas that resolve stagnation, break blood stasis, and regulate Qi, such as Safflower (Carthami Flos, 红花), Sappan Wood (Sappan Lignum, 苏木), Peach Kernel (Persicae Semen, 桃仁), Angelica sinensis Root (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, 当归), Costus root (Saussureae Radix, 木香), Tangerine Peel (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, 青皮), and Areca Seed (Arecae Semen, 槟榔). Decoct in wine, mix with child's urine (Puer Urina, 童便), and drink in large gulps. Additionally, have the patient sit in a scallion (Allii Fistulosi Caulis, 葱) decoction bath. (From *Yi Jing*)
