Treats Shanghan (Cold Damage). The chest and diaphragm feel constricted and painful. It addresses all conditions of cold stagnation, heat stagnation, food stagnation, phlegm stagnation, pi syndrome (epigastric fullness) stagnation, and water retention stagnation.
Crush fresh ginger until mushy, remove the juice, and stir-fry the residue until hot. Wrap it in silk cloth and gradually rub and moxibustion-like iron (ironing with heat) over the chest, heart area, and hypochondrium. The pain will suddenly open up and resolve on its own. If the ginger cools down, add more juice, stir-fry until hot again, and continue ironing.
Take one sheng of Evodiae Fructus (Wuzhuyu), moisten it with wine. Prepare two silk bags, steam them until extremely hot, and apply to the soles of the feet, changing as needed. Stop when the warmth penetrates deeply.
Take eight liang of Scallion (Congbai), one jin of Wheat Bran (Maifan), one jin of Salt (Yan), and four liang of Dried Ginger (Ganjiang). Stir-fry together until hot. Wrap in green silk or cloth and iron over the navel. Reheat if it cools slightly, continuing until the hands and feet become warm.
After recovery from Shanghan, sexual intercourse may cause the previously healthy partner to fall ill. The symptoms include spasms and stiffness of both hands and feet, named Yin-Yang Yi (Exchange of Yin and Yang).
Pulverize Dried Ginger (Ganjiang) into powder, mix with a few qian, and ingest. Cover with blankets to induce sweating for cure.
Dried Ginger (Ganjiang), Lead Oxide (Huandan), Calcined Alum (Kufan), Black Pepper (Hujiao) (each 3 qian).
Grind all ingredients into fine powder. Mix with dripping rice wine to form pills. Divide one dose into two pills. For males, place on the left palm; for females, on the right palm. Press the Huiyin acupoint (CV-1) until sweating occurs shortly thereafter.
Treats Hongxiangjiao (Foot Qi / Gouty Arthritis) complicated by Shanghan. Symptoms include sudden redness and swelling of both dorsum pedis, accompanied by fever, and edema with pain in both lower legs. This is due to infection with damp-heat pathogens. The damp-heat should descend via the Bladder meridian, after which body heat will naturally recede. Do not use wind-dispelling herbs, as this may cause the pathogen to ascend, leading to an incurable condition.
Take Poria (Fuling, 8 qian), Coix Seed (Yiyiren, 8 qian), Artemisiae Scopariae Herba (Yinchen), Stephaniae Tetrandrae Radix (Fangji), Gardeniae Fructus (Zhizi) (each 8 fen), Alismatis Rhizoma (Zexie, 2.5 qian), and Chaenomelis Fructus (Mu Gua, 8 fen).
Decoct in water and take three doses. When urination and defecation become smooth and heat subsides, stop. After five doses, swelling disappears. After ten doses, complete recovery occurs.
Treatment is the same as above.
Take Poria (Fuling) and Alismatis Rhizoma (Zexie) (each 5 qian), Cinnamon Twig (Rougui, 3 fen), Chaenomelis Fructus (Mu Gua), and Gentianae Radix (Danshen/Dancao, each 1 qian), and Plantaginis Semen (Cheqianzi, husked and cleaned, 3 qian).
Decoct in water and take six to seven doses for cure.
Old Oil Pine Joint (Laoyousongjie, 7 liang, pounded very finely), Black Pepper (Hujiao, 7 grains per year of age), Eggs (2 pieces).
Add three to four large bowls of water, cook thoroughly with the eggs. First, give half a teacup of the broth to the patient. Then, take one egg and rub it over the chest and abdomen. Replace with a new egg when it cools.
Another prescription:
Apply Clove Oil (Dingxiangyou) to the anterior chest, posterior chest, umbilicus, Dantian, Yao Yan (waist eyes), both sides of the lower abdomen, Ding Men, Huiyin acupoint (CV-1), and Yongquan acupoint (KI-1). This greatly expels Yin-cold pathogens.
