Cotton seeds are burned to ash; one qian (approx. 3-5g) is applied topically per use, which is effective. Another prescription: Longgu (Fossilized Bones, 2 qian), Kubai Fan (Calcined Alum, 1 qian), and Qingfen (Calomel, 8 fen) are ground together into a fine powder and applied several times, which is also effective. For umbilical swelling with exudate, applying Kubai Fan powder or Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex) powder topically is effective.
Machixian (Portulacae Herba) is burned and ground into powder for topical application, which is effective. Another method uses red woolen fabric burned to ash for topical application, which is also effective. This method can also treat persistent dryness of the umbilicus.
Haipiaoxiao (Sepiae Endoconcha, with the internal shell removed) and Yanzhi (Vermilion/Carmine) are ground together into a fine powder. The wound is first moistened with oil, then the medicine is applied, which is effective. Another regimen: Baishizhi (Aluminis Silicatis et Sulfatis Preparatio) powder is applied topically to cure it. If not yet healed, the powder is lightly stir-fried, cooled, and applied again. It is essential not to remove the previous layer of medicine; it will surely heal.
Hongfandou (Vigna angularis var. nipponensis), Danchidou (Fermented Soybean), Tiannanxing (Arisaematis Rhizoma), and Xianbailian (Pentaphragmatis Radix) are each taken in amounts of one qian. They are ground into powder. Banana juice (extracted by crushing fresh bananas) is added with a small amount of sesame oil to mix the medicine, which is then applied around the umbilicus. Healing occurs when urination resumes naturally.
Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Wuyao (Linderae Radix, stir-fried with salt water), Shengbaishao (Paeoniae Radix Alba, raw), Xiaohuixiang (Foeniculi Fructus, stir-fried with salt water), and Gouteng (Uncariae Ramulus cum Uncis) are each taken in amounts of three fen. Qingpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Viride, wine-fried) is taken in an amount of one-and-a-half fen. One zhong (approx. 200ml) of water is used to decoct until half a zhong remains. The decoction is divided into several doses for administration, leading to recovery. *Yi Zong Ji Cheng* records that whole-body lamp-fire therapy for treating umbilical convulsions (Qifeng) and mouth-tightening (Cuekou) is very effective, but requires mastery by practitioners. Here, the diagram of Qifeng Lamp-Fire from Xia Yuzhu's work is presented; moxibustion according to the acupoints is also effective.
Six points surround the umbilical ring. If the umbilical cord has not fallen off, one moxa cone is applied at the base of the cord; once it has fallen off, one moxa cone is applied at the site of detachment. Shaoshang (LU 11) is located on the medial side of the big toenail, approximately the width of a leek leaf away from the flesh; one point on each side. Ximen (Baihui/Dantian area depending on context, here likely referring to anterior fontanelle or specific pediatric points like Baihui/Meixin) - specifically: Ximen (Anterior Fontanelle) one point, Meixin (between eyebrows) one point, Renzhong (GV 26) one point, Chengjiang (CV 24) one point. Totaling thirteen moxa cones.
For infants under six months old, herbal medicines must be decocted strongly. Each dose should be limited to four or five spoons, or seven or eight spoons. For infants between six months and one year old, the dose is up to half a cup. Additionally, the nursing mother must avoid oily foods. After meals, residual milk should be expressed. The infant should drink one bowl of the medicinal liquid, lie supine for a while, and then suckle the mother's milk; this is crucial.
Chen Feixia's *Youyou Jicheng* discusses this matter in great detail. By replacing the character "Jing" (Startle/Fright) with "Chu" (Convulsion/Twitching), and categorizing them into Misguided Convulsions, Similar Convulsions, and Non-Convulsions, it causes those accustomed to discussing "Jing Feng" (Wind of Fright) to reflect. It allows practitioners to follow the etiology and treatment methods recorded in the book, ensuring appropriate actions and prescriptions. This helps prevent premature death in children worldwide. Therefore, any practitioner specializing in pediatrics should regard this book as a standard. Here, only dozens of excerpts are recorded for non-medical professionals to reference as needed. Whenever an infant experiences convulsions, they should only be supported/held gently, not grasped tightly to force calmness, thereby avoiding the risk of contractures.
