Method for applying to the navel to treat jaundice: See "Internal Medicine Jaundice".
Pediatric acute jaundice: Take a loofah, including skin and seeds, burn it until carbonized but retaining medicinal properties (charcoalization), grind into powder. Take one qian per dose, mixed with rice water, administer continuously for several times until cured.
Pediatric jaundice with golden-yellow complexion, caused by food stagnation condensing in the Spleen: Decoct straw into a concentrated decoction and drink; multiple doses are effective. Another method: Obtain the root of Coix seed (Yiyiren) from mountains, wash extremely clean, decoct in water and take; the disease will heal spontaneously.
Treating yellowing caused by damp-heat: Take half a jin of fresh ginger and half a jin of Yinchen (Artemisiae Scopariae Herba), pound them together into a paste, wrap well in cloth, and frequently rub over the whole body; the yellow color will naturally recede.
Pain in the Upper Jiao is located above the diaphragm and constitutes epigastric pain. Pain in the Middle Jiao is located at the Zhongwan point area and indicates pathology between the Stomach and Spleen. Pain in the Lower Jiao is located below the umbilicus and indicates pathology between the Liver and Kidney. Generally, tenderness that improves with pressure indicates deficiency syndrome, while tenderness that worsens with pressure indicates excess syndrome. Chronic diseases are mostly deficiency, while acute/sudden diseases are mostly excess. Pain that decreases slightly after eating indicates deficiency; abdominal distension and aversion to food indicate excess. Pain that is slow and mild, with an indeterminate location, indicates deficiency; pain that is severe and hard, with a fixed location, indicates excess.
Abdominal pain with cold pathogen: The facial complexion may be cyanotic or pale; if the cold is severe, the complexion is dim, lips, mouth corners, and fingernails turn cyanotic, and there is a preference for hot compresses. This indicates extreme deficiency-cold of the Spleen Qi. For mild cases, use Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Qinghuagui (Cinnamomi Cortex), Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), and Tu Chao Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma stir-fried with soil) each 1 qian, Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix), and Zhi Gancao (Prepared Licorice Root) each 5 fen, 6 dates, and 3 slices of Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens). Decoct in water and take warm. For severe cold, use Liujunzi Tang (Six Gentlemen Decoction) plus 1 qian of Qinghuagui, Sha Ren (Amomi Fructus), Baiko Ren (Cardamomi Albi Semen), and Liangjiang (Alpiniae Officinarum Rhizoma) each 6 fen. If raw, cold fruits and vegetables have accumulated in the Middle Jiao causing abdominal pain, diarrhea, vomiting, and nausea, add Wei Shenqu (Fermented Medicinal Leaven baked) 1.5 qian, Gong Dingxiang (Caryophylli Flos), and Muxiang Xie (Powdered Aucklandia) each 5 fen. If diarrhea persists, add Rou Doukou (Myristicae Semen) with oil removed, 8 fen.
Abdominal pain with heat pathogen: Red face, high fever, restlessness of the four limbs, and heat in the palms and soles. Use Sishun Qingliang Yin (Four-Oriented Cooling Decoction). Baishao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) 2 qian, Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Jin Zhuang Huang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma) each 1 qian, Zhi Gancao (Prepared Licorice Root) 5 fen. Decoct in water and take hot. If bowel movements are normal, use only one piece of Baishao weighing 3 qian and one piece of Gancao weighing 2 qian. Wrap in seven layers of paper, moisten slightly, and roast slowly over low fire until cooked. Remove, pound into a paste, decoct in water, and take. If cold signs are present, adding 5 fen of Rougui (Cinnamomi Cortex) is particularly excellent. The latter formula is named Shaoyao Gancao Tang (Peony and Licorice Decoction), which treats all types of abdominal pain; however, for cold patterns, it is suitable to add a slight amount of Rougui.
Pain due to food stagnation: Warm breath from the mouth, yellow or pale complexion, dull eyes or excessive sclera visibility, preference for sleep and aversion to food, sour-smelling stool. For mild cases, use Shanzha Rou (Crataegi Fructus flesh) 2 qian, Guangpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Banxia Jiang Chao (Pinelliae Rhizoma stir-fried with ginger juice), and Fuling (Poria) each 1 qian, Wei Shenqu (Baked Fermented Medicinal Leaven), Luobo Zi (Radish Seed) each 1.5 qian, add Houpo Jiang Chao (Magnoliae Officinalis Bark stir-fried with ginger juice) and Binglang Chao (Areca Seed stir-fried) each 7 fen. Decoct in water and take for several doses. For severe cases, use Sanxian Wan (Three Immortals Pill), see "Dysentery".
