(For mothers wishing to wean, this formula is indicated. In women, blood ascends to become milk and descends to become menstruation. To wean, by regulating menstruation, the milk flows downward, thereby avoiding the suffering of breast distension and pain.)
Radix Angelicae Sinensis Cauda (Dangguiwei), Radix Paeoniae Rubra (Chishaoyao), Flos Carthami Tinctorii treated with wine (Jiu Honghua), Caulis Achyranthis Bidentatae treated with wine (Jiu Niuxi) (each 5 qian).
These four herbs are all agents that guide blood downward, hence their use. Named "Mianhuai" (Free from Embrace), because a child is free from the parents' embrace after three years of birth.
(Children's diseases are no different from adults'. However, regarding care for newborns and conditions such as smallpox/rash, it is necessary to collect separate methods for easier application. The so-called worldly... When an infant is first born, quickly wrap a finger in cotton wool, wipe the foul blood and impurities from the infant's mouth and tongue, called "Yuxian" (Jade Holding). If the cry is emitted immediately, illness ensues. (Mr. Xue said: At birth, the infant holds a blood clot in the mouth. Upon crying, it is swallowed, and the toxin hides in the Mingmen (Gate of Life). Encountering hot weather, food stagnation, or external contraction of wind-cold with fever, etc., causes sores and rashes. It is urgent to use soft cloth wrapped around the finger before crying... even if pox erupts, it will be mild.) Also examine under the tongue; if there is a membrane connecting the tongue, like a pomegranate seed. If unable to cry, voice does not change, quickly cut it with a reed knife; slight bleeding ensures survival. If excessive bleeding occurs under the tongue, burn disordered hair to ash, mix with suet... Huiyun says, look at two yellow veins at the tooth roots, cut them with a reed knife. Applying pig milk is good; if the infant's mouth is hard to open, first apply pig...
Take one joint-length piece of Radix Glycyrrhizae Preparata (Fen Gancao), crush it, add water equivalent to two shell measures, decoct to one shell measure. Wrap in cotton wool, dip, and let the infant suckle. If foul fluid is vomited, it is auspicious. If one shell measure is taken without vomiting, no further administration is needed. Regardless of the infant's deficiency/excess or cold/heat, it must be administered. (Xinjian states: Upon birth, infants administer Mercury Powder (Gongfen), Cinnabar (Zhusha), White Honey (Baimi), Rhizoma Coptidis (Huanglian), Calculus Bovis (Niuhuang) to purge fetal toxins. Modern people generally follow this, unaware that modern times differ from antiquity. These drugs damage the spleen and defeat yang qi; if given to infants, they will surely develop other syndromes later. It is only suitable to decoct Fermented Soybean (Dansudou) for rinsing the mouth, so the toxin naturally drains. This also aids nourishing spleen qi and digesting milk/food. Mr. Xue pre-cut a small amount of Gancao, covered it to keep warm during labor; at delivery, wrap a soft cotton-wrapped finger in Gancao juice to wipe the mouth, then use various methods to purge fetal toxins.)
