Treats dysentery with red and white discharge, as well as malaria characterized by alternating chills and fever.
Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma) and Chenxicha (Chenpi Tea), three qian of each. Decoct strongly.
Tea assists Yin, while ginger assists Yang, thereby balancing cold and heat; it can also dispel summerheat and resolve toxicity from alcohol and food. This formula has been used repeatedly with efficacy; do not neglect it because its nature is mild and simple.
Treating Dysentery
(Liu Caochuang) Treats intractable abdominal pain and diarrhea. (Spleen deficiency leads to diarrhea, Liver excess leads to pain. Wu Hegao stated: This differs from food stagnation; pain due to food stagnation decreases after defecation. Here, diarrhea and pain persist, so the cause is attributed to Spleen failure and Liver invasion. Dai Shi stated: Watery diarrhea without abdominal pain indicates Dampness. Severe pain that alleviates after defecation indicates Food Stagnation. Watery diarrhea with abdominal pain and borborygmus, where pain and defecation occur in episodes, indicates Fire. Intermittent defecation with variable frequency indicates Phlegm. Undigested food in stool indicates Qi Deficiency.)
Baizhu (Earth-fried San liang), Baishao (Wine-fried Er liang), Chenpi (Fried Yi liang ban), Fangfeng (Yi liang). Decoct or prepare as pills. For chronic diarrhea, add Shengma.
Baizhu's bitter taste dries Dampness, its sweet flavor tonifies the Spleen, and its warm nature harmonizes the Middle Jiao. Shaoyao's cold nature drains Liver Fire, its sour astringency directs rebellious Qi downward, and it relieves spasmodic pain. Fangfeng's pungency disperses Liver pathogenic factors, its fragrance promotes Qi circulation, resolves toxicity of various herbs, and treats tendon hernia. (Pulling pain in the penis, unbearable swelling and rigidity, caused by the use of aphrodisiac sorcery; this formula resolves such toxicity.)
Gancao (Er liang), Heidou (Ban sheng).
Su Song stated: Ancient texts claim Da Dou (Soybean) resolves toxicity of various herbs, but tests show this is not entirely true; adding Gancao makes the verification remarkable. If treating tendon hernia, one should use Gancao Shao (the tip of the licorice root) combined with Dahuang, named Dahuang Gancao Tang, to treat Xiao Ke (Wasting and Thirsting syndrome) affecting the Upper, Middle, and Lower Jiao.
(Jingyue) For conditions such as external contraction of Wind-Cold, fever with aversion to cold, headache and body ache, and early-stage malaria, when Qi and Blood are harmonious, a mild dispersing method is appropriate.
Chaihu (Yi-San qian), Fangfeng (Yi qian), Chenpi (Qian ban), Shaoyao (Er qian), Gancao (Yi qian), Shengjiang (3-5 slices). If there is slight fullness in the chest and abdomen, add Zhike (one qian). Su Ye (Perilla leaf) may also be used.
