(Li Dongyuan) Treats "Big Head Epidemic" (Epidemic Swollen Head Disease). Initially, there is aversion to cold and heaviness of the body, followed by severe swelling of the head and face, inability to open the mouth, upper dyspnea, throat dysfunction, thirst, and dry tongue. (Common saying: Big Head Epidemic is contagious; relatives do not visit each other, and those infected often cannot be saved. During the Taihe era of the Jin Dynasty, many people suffered from this disease. Physicians used bitter-cold purgatives such as Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma) and Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma) to purge, resulting in slight relief, but symptoms returned the next day. After repeated purging, although symptoms eased slightly, the disease could not be cured, gradually progressing to a critical state. Li Dongyuan examined the patient and said: The upper part of the body is governed by Heaven's Qi; the lower half of the body is governed by Earth's Qi. This pathogenic heat lodges between the Heart and Lung, attacking upwards to cause severe swelling of the head and face. Using Chengqi Decoction-type formulas to purge excess heat from the Stomach constitutes punishing what is innocent. The reason the disease reached this state is due to inappropriate treatment. Thus, this prescription was created, saving many lives, and it was named Puji Xiaodu Yinzi.)
