(Zhao Jie'an) Treats lung injury manifesting as sore throat, wheezing and coughing with blood-streaked sputum. (When the Lung Metal is injured, the source of Kidney Water is cut off. The Kidney meridian flanks the pharynx; deficiency fire causes sore throat. Fire flaring up to scorch the Lung causes wheezing and coughing. Phlegm is generated by fire, and blood is forced out by fire.)
Prepared Rehmanniae Radix (Shu Di Huang) (3 qian), Raw Rehmanniae Radix (Sheng Di Huang) (2 qian), Ophiopogonis Radix (Mai Dong) (1.5 qian), Lilii Bulbus (Bai He), Paeoniae Radix (Shaoyao) (stir-fried), Raw Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Sheng Gan Cao), Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Dang Gui), Fritillariae Cirrhosae Bulbus (Bei Mu) (1 qian), Scrophulariae Radix (Xuan Shen).
Metal fails to generate Water; fire flares and water dries. Therefore, the two Rehmannies are used as the sovereign drug to assist the Kidney in nourishing Water and retreating heat. Lilii Bulbus protects the Lung and calms the spirit; Ophiopogonis Radix clears heat and moistens dryness; Scrophulariae Radix promotes...

Treats lung deficiency cough. Honey-processed Mori Cortex (Sang Bai Pi), Prepared Rehmanniae Radix (Shu Di Huang) (2 qian), Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (Ren Shen), Astragali Radix (Huang Qi) (honey-processed), Schisandrae Fructus (Wu Wei Zi), Asteris Tatarici Radix (Zi Wan) (1 qian).
Using Ginseng and Astragalus for lung deficiency: the Spleen is the mother of the Lung, and Qi is the mother of Water. (Tonify the mother when deficient.) Using Prepared Rehmannia: the Kidney is the child of the Lung; if the child is deficient, it must steal from...
Its phlegm
Moisten the Lung

Move
Kidney
Because the Lung is affected by pathogenic fire from the Heart, seeking to retreat into the Water, but the Kidney Water is dry and has fire, leaving no place to reside; thus it returns upward to cause disease.)
(Qian Yi) Treats lung deficiency with fire, characterized by cough without body fluids and airway obstruction/gurgling. (Excessive fire leads to fluid depletion; fluid depletion leads to airway obstruction.)
Donkey-hide Gelatin (Ejiao) (fried with Toad Skin/Ge Fen, half liang), Aristolochiae Fructus (Dou Ling) (baked), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gan Cao) (roasted), Arctii Fructus (Niu Bang Zi) (stir-fried until fragrant, 1 liang), Prunus Armeniacae Semen (Xing Ren) (skin and tips removed, 7 qian), Glutinous Rice (Nuomi)...
Aristolochiae Fructus clears heat and descends fire. (The fruit resembles the Lung, hence it enters the Lung meridian.) Arctii Fructus unblocks the diaphragm and lubricates phlegm. (Moistens the Lung and resolves heat. Thus it treats fire-induced cough.)
Apricot Seed
Retreats and
Tonifies the Lung
(Haizang) Treats lung injury with extreme qi exhaustion, chronic cough due to labor fever, expectoration of phlegm and blood. (Qi exhaustion is one of the six extremes. The Lung governs Qi; when primordial Qi is deficient, yin fire becomes excessive. Vigorous fire consumes Qi, leading to qi exhaustion. Fire flares up the lung system, causing persistent chronic cough; severely, it forces blood upward.) And lung atrophy transforming into abscess.
Asteris Tatarici Radix (Zi Wan) (washed and stir-fried), Donkey-hide Gelatin (Ejiao) (fried with Toad Skin/Ge Fen into pearls), Anemarrhenae Rhizoma (Zhi Mu), Fritillariae Cirrhosae Bulbus (Bei Mu) (1 qian), Platycodonis Radix (Jie Geng), Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (Ren Shen), Poria (Fu Ling), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gan Cao) (5 fen).
Chronic cough due to overwork indicates lung deficiency. Even if there are heat signs, they are all deficiency fire. Haizang uses Lung-protection as the sovereign strategy, hence using Asteris Tatarici Radix and Donkey-hide Gelatin. (These two drugs moisten the Lung... Ginseng tonifies...)
