(Zhang Zhongjing) Treats the condition after the resolution of Shanghan (Cold Damage), characterized by emaciation and weakness, shortness of breath, and rebellious Qi leading to a desire to vomit. (After the resolution of Shanghan, residual heat remains unexhausted, and body fluids are deficient, resulting in emaciation and shortness of breath. Deficient heat rebels upward, hence the desire to vomit.) It also treats thirst caused by Summerheat injury with a deficiency pulse.
Zhu Ye (Bambusa Leaves, 2 handfuls) Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum, 1 jin) Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma, 3 liang) Gancao (Licorice Root, honey-fried, 2 liang) Maidong (Ophiopogonis Radix, 1 sheng) Banxia (Pinelliae Tuber) Jingmi (Oryza Sativa Grain, 0.5 sheng)
The acrid-cool nature of Zhu Ye and Shigao disperses residual heat. (Zhu Ye can relieve wheezing and direct rebellious Qi downward.) The sweet-neutral nature of Renshen, Gancao, Maidong, and Jingyi tonifies Lung Qi.
Another prescription, composed of Zhu Ye, Shigao, Mutong, Bohe, Jiegeng, and Gancao, is also called Zhuye Shigao Tang, treating thirst caused by excess fire in the Stomach. [Shicai stated: Yangming Wutu]
(Zhang Zhongjing) Treats heat dysentery following Shanghan, characterized by tenesmus and a desire to drink water. (Yang-heat type dysentery differs from Yin-cold type. Yin-cold dysentery should be treated with Lizhong Tang or Sini Tang to warm the Zang organs; Yang-heat dysentery presents with dark yellow, foul-smelling stools that make sounds upon passage, and heat below the umbilicus, requiring cooling herbs.)
Baitouweng (Pulsatillae Radix, 2 liang) Qinpi (Aceris Cortex) Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma) Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex, 3 liang)
Baitouweng is bitter and cold, entering the Blood level of the Yangming channel to cool the blood and stop dysentery. Qinpi is bitter, cold, and astringent, cooling the Liver and benefiting the Kidney while securing the Lower Jiao. (Steeped in water... bitter... therefore...)
(Named Jiegeng Tang in Jin Gui Yao Lue) Treats Shaoyin sore throat and Hou Bi (throat obstruction), Lung Abscess with expectoration of pus, dry cough without phlegm, and Fire stagnation in the Lung. (The channel of Hand-Shaoyin Heart passes through the throat, and the channel of Foot-Shaoyin Kidney runs along the throat; Fire flaring up causes pain. The Classic states: "When one Yin and one Yang knot together, it is called Hou Bi." One Yin refers to Shaoyin Ministerial Fire, and one Yang refers to Shaoyang Ministerial Fire. Jin Gui Yao Lue says: "Where heat has passed, blood coagulates and stagnates, accumulating into abscesses and pus, which is expectorated like congee. If caught at the beginning, it can be saved; once pus forms, it is difficult to treat." Fire stagnating in the Lung leads to dry cough without phlegm.)
Gancao (Licorice Root, 2 liang) Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix, 1 liang) Or use equal parts. Wang Haogu's modification method: add Hezi for loss of voice, add Banxia if sound cannot be produced, add Chenpi for rebellious Qi, add Zicao for pus and blood, add Huangqin for skin pain.
Gancao is sweet and neutral, detoxifying and clearing Fire. Jiegeng is bitter and acrid, clearing the Lung and benefiting the Diaphragm, opening and lifting Qi and Blood, releasing exterior Cold pathogens, expelling pus and blood, and tonifying the interior... Throat... Blood... Condition... Avoid using Danfan (Alum) or similar agents to gargle, as this prevents the extension of constrained Yang. Also avoid using Xiaoshi (Niter) and Dahuang (Rhubarb) or other cold purgatives, as this drives Yang pathogens inward. It is appropriate to use exterior-releasing herbs to lift Qi upward, thereby assisting Yang. If there is no aversion to cold and the pulse is slippery and excess, then cold purgatives should be used, along with sour astringents to consolidate. Waitai Mi Yao states: Among the Five Zang organs, although the Heart is the master, the Lung resides above. The Lung acts as the Canopy, covering the four lower organs, embodying the virtue of Heaven, facilitating Wind and Qi, loving warmth and disliking cold. If Heart Fire flares excessively and steams the Lung, Metal is damaged by Fire, causing Lung leaves to wither and attach to the Liver; when the Liver itches, coughing occurs. Due to Heart and Liver deficiency, Yang cannot transmit to the Lower Jiao, causing Zheng Qi and Yang to rise together, resulting in cough. The Lung governs skin and hair; encountering cold causes shivering and gooseflesh. Lung cough arises from withered lungs attaching to the Liver, where Wood strikes Metal causing resonance. First nourish the Lung, suppress deficient heat in Heart and Liver, and harmonize the Kidney, then recovery will occur.)
Removing Jiegeng leaves only Gancao, named Gancao Tang (Jin Gui Yao Lue), with the same indications. Adding Fangfeng creates Ganjie Fangfeng Tang, with the same indications. Adding Fangfeng, Jingjie, and Lianqiao creates Rusheng Tang, treating... Voice... Yuan Qi.
Shaoyin Heart... Nourish and prevent aphonia... Can transport... Descend Qi and... Know this is Pi (fullness)... Tang, treat... Parts.) Huang... Dryness and excessive thirst.
