(Zhang Zhongjing) Treats Taiyang disease (Taiyang disease) with a floating and slippery pulse, heat on the exterior and cold on the interior. (A floating pulse indicates the pathogen is on the exterior; a slippery pulse indicates it is on the interior. "Cold on the interior" here refers to the etiology of Taiyang disease, which is the root cause of generating internal heat.) Also treats San Yang combined disease (San Yang combined disease). The pulse is floating and large, the abdomen is full and distended, the body feels heavy, turning over is difficult, the mouth is insensitive (unable to taste), the face appears dirty/dull, there is delirium (delirious speech), and urinary incontinence. If sweating therapy is misused, delirium will occur; if purgation therapy is misused, sweat will appear only on the head, the hands and feet will become cold from the extremities inward, and spontaneous sweating will occur. (Abdominal fullness, body heaviness, oral insensitivity, and delirium are signs of Yangming disease (Yangming disease). A dirty/dull face is a sign of Shaoyang disease (Shaoyang disease). Urinary incontinence is a sign of Taiyang disease (Taiyang disease). Among these three syndromes, Yangming predominates, indicating pathogens in both the interior and exterior. Releasing the exterior will exacerbate dry-heat, leading to delirium. Attacking the interior will exhaust Yin Qi at the lower part, causing deficient Yang to float upward and escape, inevitably resulting in forehead sweating and cold extremities. If spontaneous sweating occurs, it indicates intense heat in all three Yang channels; this decoction should be administered to resolve heat in both the interior and exterior.) It is generally used for Yangming disease characterized by a洪大 (Hongda/Great and Surging) and long pulse, aversion to cold being absent but aversion to heat present, headache, spontaneous sweating, thirst, dry tongue coating, eye pain, nasal dryness, inability to sleep, mental restlessness and irritability, tidal fever in the late afternoon (Ribu Chaore), or macules appearing due to Yang toxicity, and various diseases caused by Stomach heat. (Evil heat is flourishing, hence the Hongda pulse. There is no external cold pathogen, hence no aversion to cold but rather aversion to heat. Wind-stroke presents with sweating, while Cold damage presents without sweating. Once transmitted to the Yangming channel, sweating occurs, termed "Heat Venting," so Yangming disease typically involves sweating. Internal heat causes thirst. Since Yangming governs the muscles, muscle heat occurs. The pulse connects to the eyes, causing eye pain. The pulse accompanies the nose; Lung Metal dryness causes nasal dryness. Stomach disharmony leads to restless sleep. Human Yang Qi travels through the Yang aspects twenty-five times during the day. Dawn belongs to Shaoyang, midday to Taiyang, and late afternoon (Ribu) to Yangming. In Cold damage syndromes, late afternoon tidal fever indicates a Stomach excess condition without deficiency. If Stomach heat is not purged, macules will erupt.)
Shi Gao (Gypsum Fibrosum, 石膏) [1 jin] Zhi Mu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma, 知母) [6 liang] Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 甘草) [2 liang] Jing Mi (Oryza Sativa, 粳米) [6 he]. First boil Shi Gao for dozens of boiling cycles. (Its flavor is light and properties are hard to extract.) Then add the remaining herbs.
When Heat/Yin (Re Yin) invades internally, bitter herbs are used to disperse it; thus, Zhi Mu, being bitter and cold, serves as the Sovereign (Jun) herb. Heat damages Qi, so sweet and cold herbs are necessary as assistants; thus, Shi Gao and Gan Cao serve as the Ministers (Chen).

Add Ren Shen (Panax Ginseng Radix, 人参) 3 liang, named Renshen Baihu Tang (Ginseng White Tiger Decoction). (Zhang Zhongjing) Treats Cold damage where the patient desires to drink water, but there is no exterior syndrome. (Baihu Tang resolves heat; Ren Shen generates fluids.) [Fragment: ...no enuresis or constipation... harmonious... already... also... injury... induce... cold... If the exterior is not resolved, it is entirely a Ma Huang Tang (Ephedra Decoction) or Ge Gen Tang (Kudzu Decoction) syndrome, how can Baihu Tang be used?] It also treats Summerheat (Zhong Shu) affecting the Taiyang channel, with body heat, sweating, aversion to cold, cold feet, a faint pulse, and thirst. (Body heat and aversion to cold indicate the pathogen is on the exterior; cold feet and faint pulse indicate that exterior-releasing therapy is inappropriate.) It also treats Fire Evil injuring the Lung and Stomach, transmitting into Ge Xiao (Diaphragm Consumption). (Yu Jiayan stated: Fei Xiao (Lung Consumption) is treated with Di Huang Wan (Rehmannia Pill) addressing the Blood aspect; Shen Xiao (Kidney Consumption) is treated with Baihu Tang addressing the Qi aspect. If the disease cannot be cured, it is the physician's fault.) Add Cang Zhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma, 苍术), named Hu Jia Cang Zhu Tang (Tiger Plus Atractylodes Decoction), treating Damp-Warmth (Shi Wen) with a sinking and fine pulse. Sinking and fine pulses belong to Dampness. One first contracts Summerheat, then Dampness; the struggle between Summerheat and Dampness is called Damp-Warmth. Symptoms include cold calves, abdominal fullness, headache, body ache, profuse sweating, thirst, and delirium. Li Dongyuan stated: Injury from Summerheat due to movement damages Qi with Fire-Heat; laborers often contract this, and Renshen Baihu Tang is suitable. Injury from Summerheat due to stillness involves Dampness prevailing with body heaviness; sedentary individuals often contract this, and Cang Zhu Baihu Tang is suitable. Add Gui Zhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus, 桂枝), named Guizhi Baihu Tang (Cinnamon Twig White Tiger Decoction), from *Jin Gui Yao Lue*, treating Warm Malaria (Wen Nue) characterized by heat without cold, joint pain, and occasional vomiting. Remove Jing Mi and add Ren Shen, named Hua Ban Tang (Macule Resolving Decoction), treating macules erupted due to Stomach heat in patients with a deficient pulse. Add Chai Hu (Bupleuri Radix, 柴胡), Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix, 黄芩), and Ban Xia (Pinelliae Rhizoma, 半夏), named Chaihu Shigao Tang (Bupleurum Gypsum Decoction), treating summer cough with asthma/wheezing and thirst.
