(Ju Fang Huoxiang Zhengqi San) Treats conditions caused by external contraction of wind-cold and internal injury from diet, manifesting as aversion to cold with high fever, headache, vomiting and regurgitation, fullness and oppression in the chest and diaphragm, cough and asthma. It is also suitable for cases involving cold-dampness invasion, malaria, heatstroke, cholera with vomiting and diarrhea, and infection by miasma or noxious qi from mountainous areas. Dosage should be adjusted according to the specific condition. (Use with caution in individuals with deficient Yuan Qi, as it may further deplete healthy energy.)
Ingredients: Huoxiang (Agastache Herba), Zisu (Perilla Folium), Baizhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix), Dafupi (Arecae Pericarpium), Fuling (Poria), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma - stir-fried with soil), Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Banxiaqu (Pinelliae Tuber Fermentatum), Nongpo (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex - processed with ginger juice), Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma). Each ingredient is used in a dosage of three liang, except where specified otherwise.
Analysis of Formula Action: This formula treats febrile diseases with deep pulse due to cold damage and deficient Yuan Qi, as well as vomiting, diarrhea, and muscle twitching. Huoxiang, Zisu, and Baizhi are acrid and warm, dispersing cold and benefiting the diaphragm; Fuling, Baizhu, and Gancao strengthen the Spleen and eliminate dampness; Chenpi, Banxiaqu, and Nongpo regulate Qi and transform phlegm to resolve stagnation and harmonize the Stomach; Jiegeng diffuses the Lung and benefits the throat. Together, they achieve the effects of releasing the exterior, transforming dampness, regulating Qi, and harmonizing the middle. For severe food stagnation, add Shan Zha (Crataegi Fructus) and Shen Qu (Massa Medicata Fermentata) to promote digestion.
(Liuhe Tang) Treats summer months' dietary irregularities, internal injury from raw and cold foods, and external invasion of summer-heat qi, leading to alternating chills and fever, cholera with vomiting and diarrhea. It also addresses symptoms such as stifling sensation due to latent summer-heat, fatigue and desire to lie down, thirst, dark urine, and alcohol intoxication.
Ingredients: Sharen (Amomi Fructus), Huoxiang (Agastache Herba), Nongpo (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex), Xingren (Armeniacae Semen Amarum), Banxia (Pinelliae Tuber), Bian Dou (Dolichoris Lablab Semen), Mugua (Chaenomelis Fructus), Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Chifuling (Poria with Red Core), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma). Decoct with fresh Ginger (Shengjiang) and Jujube (Dazao).
Analysis of Formula Action: Huoxiang, Sharen, Xingren, and Nongpo have aromatic qualities that soothe the Spleen and acrid properties that move Qi. Sharen and Nongpo additionally transform food stagnation; Mugua is sour, calming the Liver and relaxing sinews. Renshen, Baizhu, Fuling, and Gancao strengthen the Spleen and leach out dampness, harmonizing the various herbs. Ginger and Jujube disperse the exterior and harmonize Ying and Wei. The entire formula aims at "harmonization," specifically harmonizing the Spleen and Stomach with the rest of the body. Wu Hegao stated: "Liuhe means harmonizing the six Fu organs. The Spleen and Stomach are the generals of the six Fu organs. By first regulating the Spleen and Stomach, water and essence distribute to all parts, the five meridians flow smoothly, and all limbs and orifices attain great harmony."
(Sanjie Tang) A general formula for treating epidemic malaria. (Yu Jiayan stated: Malaria attacks must involve both chills and fever. This is because external pathogens lie dormant between the interior and exterior, precisely at the boundary of the Shaoyang channel. When the pathogen moves outward and contends with Yang, Yin prevails causing chills; when it moves inward and contends with Yin, Yang prevails causing fever. Even pure-heat without chills (Dan Malaria/Wen Malaria) or pure-chills without fever (Pin Malaria) originate from the Shaoyang channel reaching an extreme deviation. To correct this deviation and save the deficiency, one must return the pathological state to the Shaoyang boundary, allowing Yin and Yang to harmonize before recovery. While malaria may involve other channels, if it does not involve Shaoyang, it cannot be classified as malaria. Although the pulse may vary frequently, the "wiry" (Xian) character is fundamentally present throughout.)
Ingredients: Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix), Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba - nodes removed), Zexie (Alismatis Rhizoma). Each used in a dosage of three qian.
Analysis of Pathogenesis: The malaria pathogen hides between the muscle layers, where the pathogenic factor and healthy Qi contend. If the pathogen merges with the exterior, the manifestation is at the exterior; if it merges with the interior, the manifestation is at the interior. If it has not fully merged with either, it remains in the half-exterior, half-interior region.
