[Song] After the delivery of the infant, Qi and Blood are empty; even a slight violation will injure Ying (Nutritive) Blood. Sudden illness is as heavy as a mountain, quite different from ordinary diseases. Fever due to excessive blood loss can be treated with Jiao Jiang (Scorched Ginger), Renshen (Ginseng), Baizhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome), and Chuanxiong (Sichuan Lovage Rhizome). Heart irritability and stuffiness due to Yin Deficiency, along with spontaneous sweating, can be cured by Huangqi (Astragalus Root). Nausea and vomiting injuring the Spleen and Stomach are treated with Disheng Tang (Di Sheng Decoction) for abdominal and hypochondriac distension. Danggui (Angelica Sinensis Radix) stops sweating and eliminates body heat; if not healed, using Danggui in high doses yields excellent results. Yufeng Tang (Yu Feng Decoction) acts immediately for wind-stroke; Fuling San (Poria Powder) treats palpitations. Various wind-induced Wei Bi (Flaccidity and Obstruction) and tendon cramping are treated by wise physicians with Xuefeng Tang (Blood Wind Decoction). Seeing ghosts suddenly is caused by extreme blood consumption; Tiaojing San (Regulate Menses Powder) revives the exhausted. Stroke with locked jaw, clenching teeth, convulsions, and body stiffness like opisthotonos is due to Blood Deficiency causing tendon spasms; ancient formula Ju Qing Gu Bai San (Ju Qing Gu Bai Powder) combined with Danggui and Chuanxiong is used. Postpartum menstruation that stops and then returns involves strange pathogens; hand and foot traction, clenching teeth, and dizziness are treated with Chaihu Tang (Bupleurum Decoction) to restore clear vision and hearing. Yin Deficiency fever with aversion to cold: clear during the day but ominous at night; adding Siwu Tang (Four Substances Decoction) brings great merit, curing the disease with one dose. Injury to the uterus causing dribbling urine is treated with Shen Zhu Jian Gao (Ginseng and Atractylodes Paste) to promote urination. Edema must distinguish water pathways; worry and depression require opening the chest. Early dysentery is treated with Xianglian Shaoyao Tang (Coptis and Peony Decoction); long-standing cases require Weifeng Tang (Wei Feng Decoction). Initial cold pathogen requires mild diaphoresis; unresolved heat pathogen adheres to Huanglong Tang (Yellow Dragon Decoction). Restlessness and excess heat use Qinlian Li (Huangqin and Coptis Formula); severe thirst uses Renshen Baihu Cong (Ginseng White Tiger Approach). Heat diarrhea is removed by Chaiqin Banxia (Bupleurum, Scutellaria, and Pinellia); difficult defecation is addressed by Daxie Gong (Major Bupleurum Attack). Excessive sweating with exterior weakness suits Guizhi Tang (Cinnamon Twig Decoction); interior weakness with deficiency controls Lizhong Tang (Li Zhong Decoction). Exterior release and interior attack must include tonification; do not act rashly to injure Ying Blood. Painful dribbling urine is treated with Maogen (Imperata Rhizome) for Long (Dysuria). Diarrhea uses Junling Tang (Jun Ling Decoction); cold adds Rouguodou (Nutmeg), Guizhi (Cinnamon Twig), and Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger). If heat diarrhea with intestinal mucus, use Jiangchao Huanglian (Ginger-fried Coptis) assisted by Mutong (Akebia Caulis).
[Dissertation] Postpartum Qi and Blood are severely damaged. Even those with strong labor power who deliver easily may still contract diseases, becoming lifelong afflictions. The mother must not rely on her health or neglect self-care, working hard to damage Ying Blood, or eating too much to injure the Stomach. External invasion of the Six Evils (pathogenic factors) and internal reception of the Seven Emotions create unpredictable harm. As the ancients said, "Postpartum violation, even slight, causes illness heavier than a mountain," this is true! Often, lochia is not fully expelled, leading to fever and pain; Yuan Zhen (True Origin) fails to recover, resulting in Wei (Flaccidity) or Lao (Consumption), which is common. Therefore, for all postpartum diseases, first greatly tonify Qi and Blood. Even if there are other diseases, treat them secondarily. If one wishes to expel pathogens, one must combine with tonifying agents, which is very appropriate. If harsh agents are used to attack, Qi and Blood are further damaged, and danger awaits immediately. If lochia should be expelled, it must also focus on removing the old and generating the new, with warm nourishment as the main principle; this is correct.
[Pulse Diagnosis] Postpartum pulses that are slow and slippery, or deep and fine, are suitable. Pulses that are full, large, wiry, and firm, or choppy and rapid, are dangerous.
The *Mai Jing* (Pulse Classic) states: For a woman who has just given birth, a pulse that is deep, small, and slippery indicates life; full, large, wiry, and urgent indicates death. After childbirth, if the Cun Kou (Inkwell) pulse is blazing, rapid, and irregular, it indicates death; if deep, fine, and unceasing upon pressing to the bone, it indicates life. After childbirth, due to wind-stroke, Shanghan (Cold Damage), or heat disease, if there is wheezing with shoulder breathing, a pulse that is full and floating-slow indicates life; small and urgent indicates death.
Danxi stated: Before pregnancy, a small and fine pulse is normal; after pregnancy, a full and rapid pulse indicates death. He also said: Before pregnancy, the pulse should be full and rapid; if it remains so after delivery, how can death be avoided?
