[Song] The thirteen types of Ding poison (carbuncles/furuncles) must be thoroughly mastered: Mazideng (Hemp-seed Carbuncle), Yankufeng (Salt-skin Carbuncle), Niugoudeng (Ox-Dog Carbuncle). Also included are Shuixideng (Water-wash Carbuncle), Daolian Ding (Sickle Carbuncle) totaling thirty-six, as well as Foudeng (Floating Bubble Carbuncle), Shanyandeng (Snake-eye Carbuncle), and Xiongci Deng (Male-Female Carbuncles). Additionally, Shimandeng (Stone-rot Carbuncle) falls into this category. Those with weak constitutions may suffer sudden onset. Initially, yellow blisters appear on the hands and feet; sometimes they turn purple-black accompanied by alternating chills and fever. A sensation of fire flowing in the eyes, heart palpitations, and vigilance are signs; itching and pain without fixed timing, along with vomiting and regurgitation, indicate a ominous prognosis. When the disease is first observed, immediate treatment is required; do not delay even slightly, lest it progress to chronic debility or disability.
[Discussion] Ancient formulas record thirteen types of Ding poison: Mazideng (Hemp-seed Carbuncle), Shiding (Stone Carbuncle), Xiongdeng (Male Carbuncle), Cideng (Female Carbuncle), Huoding (Fire Carbuncle), Landeng (Rotting Carbuncle), Sanshiliudeng (Thirty-Six Carbuncle), Shanyandeng (Snake-eye Carbuncle), Yankufeng (Salt-skin Carbuncle), Shuixideng (Water-wash Carbuncle), Daolian Ding (Sickle Carbuncle), Foudeng (Floating Bubble Carbuncle), and Niugoudeng (Ox-Dog Carbuncle). These conditions arise from exposure to violent atmospheric qi generated by heaven and earth. When yin and yang qi clash violently, they form explosive pathogenic qi, similar to sudden gales, heavy fog, extreme heat, or severe cold. This pathogen invades the skin, enters the four limbs, transmits through the meridians, causing obstruction at the couli (skin pores and interstices), preventing the smooth circulation of Ying (Nutrient) and Wei (Defensive) qi, thereby manifesting as carbuncles, sores, or Ding poison. Handling dead beasts can expose one to their toxic vapors, which is particularly harmful. As stated in the Classics: "Changes from rich and greasy foods can generate large Ding." This is due to indulging in spicy, strong-flavored, roasted, or fried meat and fish, leading to toxin accumulation within. However, when a sore first appears, it typically itches before hurting, feels cold before becoming hot, and after the heat stabilizes, chills often predominate. Symptoms include heaviness in the limbs, headache, heart palpitations, visual disturbances seeing fire, and potentially vomiting and regurgitation, all indicating a critical condition. Among them, Mazideng itches throughout its course; it must not be touched, for touching makes it difficult to treat. Of all Ding types, Sanshiliudeng (Thirty-Six Carbuncle) is the most feared. Its appearance features a black, raised head resembling a black bean, with redness around the periphery. It starts as one lesion, increasing by one daily; if it reaches thirty-six, it becomes untreatable by medicine. Urgent treatment offers a chance of survival. For Shiding, Huoding, Landeng, Shanyandeng, Shuixideng, Daolian Ding, Xiongdeng, Cideng, and Yankufeng, named according to their shapes, failure to treat promptly also leads to danger. Only Foudeng and Niugoudeng are benign; even without treatment, they are not fatal. Generally, Ding sores must not be touched. If there is extreme stiffness and unbearable pain, it indicates that the area has been touched.
External Treatment for Ding Sores
For any Ding sore, first prick the surrounding area and center with a needle. Then apply a paste made from Xionghuang (Realgar) and Cihuang (Orpiment) mixed with vinegar, or apply Zijin San (Purple Gold Powder). Healing occurs in no more than two applications.
Internal Treatment for Ding Poison
When Ding sores initially present with aversion to cold and high fever, use Chishao Yao Tang (Red Peony Root Decoction). If toxic vapors enter the interior causing incessant restlessness, inability to eat, or if the lesion turns purple-black and sinks inward, use Feilong Duoming Dan (Flying Dragon Life-Taking Pill). At the onset of Ding, if the pulse is surging and wiry or surging and solid, and swelling is severe suggesting pus formation, use Tuoli Tang (Support-the-Interior Decoction). For severe cases, use Feilong Duoming Dan or Fanhun Dan (Soul-Returning Pill). To extract the Ding head, use Zijin Dan (Purple Gold Pill).

The patient should first chew 3 cun of scallion white, spit it into the palm, wrap the pill in the scallion, and swallow with hot wine. After walking about five li, if sweating occurs, the disease will heal.
Zijin Dan (Purple Gold Pill)
Treats Ding poison where toxic vapors have entered the interior, causing incessant restlessness. Also miraculously effective for treating carbuncles, back sores, and malignant ulcers.
This is identical to Fanhun Dan but without snail, musk, and myrrh.
Administer as described above.
