[Myriad Gold Ointment]
Indicated for various malignant sores. This formula was provided by the Master of Shenxiong Hall.
Ingredients and Preparation:
Wubeizi (Galla Chinensis, 1 qian), Chishao Yao (Radix Paeoniae Rubra), Baizhi (Radix Angelicae Dahuricae), Dahuang (Radix et Rhizoma Rhei), Guanzi Gui (Cortex Cinnamomi), Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis), Xuanshen (Radix Scrophulariae), Ganyedi Huang (Radix Rehmanniae Preparata) (each 2.5 qian, these are for the first decoction); Guodan (Litharge, 4 liang, added in the first stage); Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis, 2.5 qian); Qianghuo (Rhizoma Notopterygii), Yunmu (Muscovite, separately ground, each 1 qian); Badou (Semen Crotonis, 35 grains, these are for the second decoction); Xuxiang (Olibanum, separately ground), Huashi (Talcum, separately ground), Baijiaoxiang (Boswellia Carterii, separately ground, each 1 qian); Moyao (Myrrha, separately ground, 2.5 qian).
Procedure:
Finely chop each of the aforementioned herbs. Use one jin (approx. 600g in Song dynasty context, referred to as 'sheng' in text implying a specific measure or local standard) of pure sesame oil. First, boil half a jin of oil in a crucible. Add the eight herbs: Wubeizi, Shaoyao, Baizhi, Dahuang, Guanzi Gui, Danggui, Xuanshen, and Dihuang. Stir the oil with a willow branch until the herbs turn scorched brown. Filter out the dregs using fine cotton cloth. Pour the medicated oil back into the crucible. When it is slightly boiling, add four liang of Guodan (Litharge). Stir continuously until the oil turns purple. Test by dripping one or two drops of oil onto water; if it forms bead-like pearls, immediately pour it out and place it in a safe location to cool. Take another half jin of clear oil, boil it as before, and add Danggui, Qianghuo, Yunmu, Badou, and ten to twenty pieces of Qingyangliuzhi pi (bark of green willow branches, size of a fingernail). Simmer until the herbs are scorched, then filter through cotton cloth. Reheat the medicated oil and add Xuxiang, Huashi, Jiaoxiang, Moyao, and Guodan. Simmer until the oil turns purple again and forms beads when dropped in water. Then, pour the previously prepared medicated oil into the crucible and mix thoroughly by simmering. Do not use excessive heat during decoction to prevent burning and loss of efficacy. Verified by Chancellor Zheng, this method is effective.
