If pus is discharging or the area is red and swollen, use the method transmitted by Su Yingzhong.
Take an appropriate amount of fermented soybean (Douchi), grind it into a paste in the palm of the hand, shape it into a cake, and apply it to the affected area. Wrap it securely with thin silk; the discharge will stop. If the sore has not yet come to a head, mix with rice vinegar and apply.
Decoct Jingcao (Eriocaulon extract) and wash the area with the warm solution for immediate effect. After harvesting rice, look for short, clustered root stalks growing in the fields that resemble small drumsticks; this is Jingcao. Fresh ginger can also be used.
Grind Biebei (Chinese Gall) and Huangbai (Phellodendron Bark) into powder and apply to the lesion.
Severe pain from sores can be fatal. Place several scoops of salt on the sore as a compress, heat it with fire until the warmth penetrates the lesion, or place the area in hot ashes so that melted wax drips into the wound for instant healing. A maid in the household of Minister Wu suffered from toxic water exposure while washing clothes, crying day and night.
Bai Fan (Alumen), Guo Dan Fei (Calculated Alum), Jiao Xiang (Gelatinous Fragrance), each 5 wen; Ru Xiang (Olibanum) 50 wen (discounted).
Grind all ingredients together into fine powder. Add a small amount of Sesame Oil and Qian Fen (Calomel, 10 wen), mix well, and apply to the affected area.
Bailian (Ampelopsis Radix), Baiji (Bletilla Rhizome), Huangbai (Phellodendron Bark), Ku Hulu Di (Stalk of Bitter Gourd), Chixiaodou (Adzuki Bean), Huangshukui Hua (Yellow Hibiscus Flower).
Grind equal parts of these herbs into fine powder. Mix with saliva in the palm of the hand to form a paste-like consistency and apply. Only one application is needed.
For cases where various medications have failed:
Form old cooked rice into tight balls, calcine them over fire until they retain their nature (charred but not ash), then mix with Sesame Oil and Ni Fen (Calomel) for topical application. Su Taoguang, in the year Dinghai, suffered from broken sores above his ear, alternating between pain and itching for two months. He stated that this condition was likely due to phlegm-fluid retention. Using only soap calcined to retain its nature, mixed with raw oil and Ni Fen for application, yields excellent results.
For conditions unrecognized by physicians, there is a miraculous formula. Transmitted by Vice-Intendant Zhao, named Bai Zhong Dequan.
Shuiyin (Mercury), Gancao (Licorice Root), Huangbai (Phellodendron Bark), Huanglian (Coptis Rhizome), Songzhi (Pine Resin), Ni Fen (Calomel), Tu Fengke (Earthen Beehive - those attached to walls, common in the South, sometimes referred to as KT nests).
Place Mercury in the palm, grind it with saliva into a mud-like consistency, and put it into a porcelain vessel. Grind with raw Sesame Oil and filter through raw silk until it resembles a thin syrup. Mix with the herbal powders and continue grinding until it reaches a thick syrup consistency. First, wash the sore with warm water and dry with silk, then apply the powder dry. For any unnamed sores, one application cures them; if yellow fluid oozes, it dries immediately upon application; unbearable itching stops instantly; severe pain ceases immediately; it is particularly effective for scabies, applied after scratching breaks the skin. The preparation must be done carefully to avoid cracking.
