Mix the previously prepared powders with the paste to form dough, shaping into pills the size of tung tree seeds. Take 10 pills each time, or increase to 20 pills, taken down with warm wine. Recovery occurs when there is slight loose stool.

Zhang Da from Zhengding Prefecture, aged twenty-nine. He had a long-standing preference for alcohol. In May of the Xinwei year of Zhiyuan, he suffered from swelling and pain in the finger joints, with limited flexion and extension, similarly affecting the knee patella. His body felt heavy, he experienced epigastric fullness and lack of appetite, and vomiting after eating. His complexion was sallow, and his spirit was deficient. By June, his pulse was deep and slow. A slow pulse indicates Spleen involvement. The *Nan Jing* states: "The main symptoms are heavy body and joint pain." This is a disease governed by Spleen Earth. The four limbs belong to the Spleen. It is likely due to his habitual drinking, compounded by seasonal dampness assisting the pathogen, causing excessive dampness flowing into the four limbs, thus resulting in swelling and pain. The *Nei Jing* states: "All dampness-induced swelling and pain belong to Spleen Earth." Zhang Zhongjing said: "Dampness flowing into joints and limbs causes painful discomfort." This refers to such cases. Treat with Da Qianghuo Tang.
Da Qianghuo Tang (Greater Notopterygium Decoction) (from *Weisheng Jiabao*)
Ingredients: Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix (Qianghuo) (1 qian), Cimicifugae Rhizoma (Shengma) (1 qian), Atractodis Rhizoma (Cangzhu) (0.5 qian), Angelicae Pubescentis Radix (Duhuo) (0.7 qian), Saposhnikoviae Radix (Fangfeng) (0.5 qian), Poria (Fuling) (0.5 qian), Alismatis Rhizoma (Zexie) (0.5 qian), Spirit of Clematis (Weilingxian) (0.5 qian), Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Danggui) (0.5 qian), Atractodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (Baizhu) (0.5 qian).
Formula Analysis: The *Nei Jing* teaches that for dampness overflowing internally, treat with bitter-warm methods, using bitter flavors to disperse. Shengma is bitter and neutral; Weilingxian, Cangzhu, and Fangfeng are bitter, acrid, and warm, possessing dispersing properties, hence they serve as Deputy Ministers. Blood stagnation without flow causes pain; Danggui is acrid and warm to scatter it. Gancao is sweet and warm, benefiting Qi and harmonizing the middle. Zexie is salty and neutral; Fuling is sweet and neutral, both promoting urination to guide out dampness via bland leaching. This ensures the flavors and qi combine to disperse dampness up and down.
Preparation: Cut the herbs. Combine all as one dose. Add two zhan of water, decoct to one zhan, strain, and take warm. Take one dose before meals and one dose after meals. Avoid alcohol, damp noodles, and raw/cold foods.
Shenzhe Tang (Kidney Garment Decoction) (from *Ruyi Fang*) treats central dampness with spontaneous urination. The medical classics state: "To treat dampness without promoting urination is not the correct method." It also states: "Patients with central dampness often have a deep, slow, and faint pulse, with pain throughout the joints and body."
Ingredients: Ginseng Radix (Renshen), Zingiberis Rhizoma (Ganjiang), Atractodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (Baizhu), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao), Poria (Fuling) (equal parts).
Preparation: Cut the herbs. Take 4 qian each time, decoct in water and administer.
Chufengshi Qianghuo Tang (Remove Wind-Dampness Notopterygium Decoction) Wei syndrome results from damp-heat attacking the Liver and Kidney. It must be urgently eliminated; otherwise, the Yuan Qi of the lower jiao will be exhausted, leading to flaccid paralysis, inevitably causing immobility below the waist and endless vexation and grievance. If body heaviness decreases, breath is not short, urination is normal, and the damp-heat season recedes, or if the increased pathogenic qi subsides, do not use Schisandrae Fructus (Wuweizi), Alismatis Rhizoma (Zexie), Poria (Fuling), Polyporus (Zhuling), Phellodendri Cortex (Huangbai), Anemarrhenae Rhizoma (Zhimu), Atractodis Rhizoma (Cangzhu), or Atractodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (Baizhu). Instead, adjust based on the specific syndrome of the primary disease. Even in regular medication, use Jiu Huangbai (wine-processed Phellodendri Cortex) at 2 or 3 fen. If seasonal changes occur and dry-cool qi prevails, add acrid-warm herbs to drain. If dampness exceeds wind and wind syndromes do not recede, with persistent dizziness and numbness... (See Shensheng Fuqi Tang).
For diseases caused by lying in wind and dampness, or being struck by cold.
Eat rice made from Setaria italica var. glauca (Huangliangmi).
Qianghuo Tang (Notopterygium Decoction) treats chronic wind-dampness that fails to resolve, attacking and flooding the meridians, causing wandering pain that is unbearable.
Ingredients: Chuanxiong Rhizoma (Chuanxiong), Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix (Qianghuo), Saposhnikoviae Radix (Fangfeng), Cinnamomi Cortex (Rougui), Paeoniae Radix Rubra (Chishaoyao), Moutan Cortex (Mudanpi), Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Danggui), Dipsaci Radix (Xuduan), Angelicae Dahuricae Radix (Baizhi) (each 1 liang).
Administration: Take with decoction of ginger and jujube.
