Whenever the pathogenic heat-toxin is exuberant internally in Taiyang disease (Taiyang syndrome), sores often erupt. This is due to the patient having excess internally and deficiency externally. When there is internal excess, the toxic factors cannot be resolved internally; when there is external deficiency, the pathogens take advantage of this deficiency to emerge into the muscles and skin, resulting in sores. The lesions vary in size but resemble peas in shape, with colors ranging from white to red. If the head forms a pustule containing white pus, the toxicity is mild. If the lesion is purple-black with roots embedded deep within the muscle tissue, the toxicity is severe. In extreme cases, they may cover the entire body, affecting the five zang organs and the seven orifices. Due to external deficiency and internal excess, with exuberant heat-toxin attacking the zang-fu organs, residual pathological flow moves into the muscles, eventually forming these sores within the pores of the skin. Severe cases cover the whole body, resembling fire blisters. If the base is red and the head is white, the toxicity is mild; if the color is purple-black, the toxicity is severe. These sores resemble peas and are also called "pea sores" (variola). A surging and rapid pulse indicates this condition.
Formulas:
Huanglian Yinzi (Coptis Decoction): Treats Taiyang disease where toxic factors have not dispersed, causing pea sores.
Coptidis Rhizoma (1 liang, remove stamens), Glutinis Oryzae Semen (1 he), Hanshuishi (3 liang). Pound and sieve the above ingredients. Add two large bowls of water, decoct until one and a half bowls remain. Strain. Take warm doses at any time.
Daqing San (Isatidis Powder): Treats high fever and headache in Taiyang disease, with pea-like sores all over the body.
Baphicacanthi Cuspidis Folium et Radix, Gardeniae Fructus, Rhei Radix et Rhizoma (crushed and lightly stir-fried), Cornu Rinocerotis (shaved), Cimicifugae Rhizoma, Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (roasted until slightly red and crushed, each 1 liang). Grind into powder. Take 5 qian per dose, decocted in one large bowl of water until reduced to one-fifth. Strain and take warm. At any time.
For Taiyang disease where heat-toxin has not resolved and pea sores are about to appear, accompanied by fever and pain, use Jieji Hanwu Fang (Muscle-Releasing Sweating Formula).
Puerariae Radix (1 liang, sliced), Gypsum Fibrosum (2 liang), Ephedrae Herba (1 liang, remove root ends), Scutellariae Radix (0.5 liang), Paeoniae Radix Rubra (0.5 liang), Cinnamomi Cortex (0.5 liang), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (0.5 liang, roasted until slightly red and crushed). Pound into fine powder. Take 2 qian mixed with warm wine at any time. Complete three doses. Cover with clothing to induce sweating.
For Taiyang disease with pea sores that have not yet suppurated, taken at the first sign: (From *Shenghui Fang*)
Coptidis Rhizoma (1 liang, remove stamens). Pound and crush. Decoct in one large bowl of water until reduced to six-tenths. Strain. Take warm in one dose at any time. This resolves the sores before suppuration occurs.
Another prescription (From *Shenghui Fang*):
Apply good-quality honey evenly over the sores. Alternatively, decoct honey with Cimicifugae Rhizoma and apply. Consume frequently.
Another prescription (From *Shenghui Fang*):
Aquilariae Lignum Resinatum (0.5 liang). Pound and crush. Decoct in one large bowl of water until reduced to six-tenths. Strain and take in one dose.
For Taiyang disease with pea sores about to erupt:
Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (1 liang, roasted until slightly red and crushed). Pound and crush. Decoct in one large bowl of water until reduced to six-tenths. Strain. Take slowly before or after meals to prevent sores from appearing. Do not take if they have already erupted.
Another prescription (From *Shenghui Fang*):
Take one small bowl of refined oil. This prevents sores from forming.
Another prescription (From *Shenghui Fang*):
Take one small bowl of fresh sheep blood frequently. Cow blood is also effective.
Another prescription (From *Shenghui Fang*):
Bovis Lac (4 liang), Butter (1 liang). First warm the milk until it barely boils, then add butter. Once melted, take warm frequently on an empty stomach. This prevents sores from forming.
For Taiyang disease with high fever, headache, and pea-like sores all over the body:
Suis Vesica Bile (one piece). Mix with half a small bowl of vinegar and boil once. Let cool to warm temperature. Take as one dose. At any time.
For white-headed sores in Taiyang disease, with red swelling around the edges, indicating impending pea sores: (From *Shenghui Fang*)
Ephedrae Herba (1 liang, remove root ends), Rhei Radix et Rhizoma (1 liang, crushed and lightly stir-fried). Slice and mix evenly. Take 0.5 liang per dose, decocted in one large bowl of water until reduced to one-fifth. Strain and take warm at any time. Wait some time.
