When pea-pox (smallpox) develops after a Shanghan (Cold Damage) disease, it is caused by heat-toxin. This toxic qi penetrates the Zang-Fu organs, and residual toxic qi rushes into the muscles, generating sores and rashes.
When the illness subsides, the sores heal, but the toxic qi has not yet fully dissipated. Therefore, although the scabs fall off, the scars remain prominent. The skin may be uneven or raised with flesh; it is appropriate to apply medicines that dispel toxicity and eliminate scars.
