When epidemic febrile diseases (Shi Qi Bing) have just subsided, the blood and qi (Vital Energy) remain deficient, and body fluids (Jin Ye) have not yet recovered. If one engages in physical labor again, illness will recur. Excessive speech or overthinking damages the spirit (Shen); combing hair or bathing consumes physical strength. Even if not overly fatigued, forcing oneself to work generates internal heat. Once this heat re-enters the meridians and collaterals, it causes disease recurrence, a condition known as "Lao Fu" (Relapse due to Overexertion).
Furthermore, when a disease has just subsided, the spleen and stomach functions are still weak, and the qi of grain (Gu Qi) has not recovered. Consuming fatty meat, raw fish slices, cakes, dates, chestnuts, etc., which the body cannot digest, leads to stagnation and accumulation in the intestines and stomach. This causes abdominal distension and firmness, leading to fever and disease recurrence, a condition known as "Shi Fu" (Relapse due to Dietary Indiscretion).
After a disease subsides, one should only consume congee or liquid foods. It is better to eat little and feel slightly hungry than to become full. Do not consume other foods; even if desired, they should not be given. After a period of time, mutton and rice porridge can be gradually introduced. However, rich juices, as well as pheasant, rabbit, and venison, along with pork and dog meat, must be avoided. Post-recovery, one should rest in bed frequently and avoid rising early. Combing hair and washing the face consume energy; excessive talking and mental exertion damage the spirit. All these factors lead to Lao Fu.
For example, Gu Zixian, a district supervisor, fell ill. Although symptoms had ceased, he had not fully recovered. He sought pulse diagnosis from Hua Tuo. Hua Tuo stated: "Although superficially recovered, the interior remains deficient and true recovery has not occurred. Yang qi is insufficient. Avoid all labor. General fatigue may be tolerated, but sexual exhaustion will lead to death, characterized by the tongue protruding several inches." His wife, hearing of his recovery, traveled over a hundred li to visit him. After intercourse for one night, three days later, the patient developed fever, trismus (lockjaw), and his tongue protruded several inches before he died. Within one hundred days of recovery, while qi and strength are not yet restored, engaging in sexual activity rarely ends without death.
A scholar named Gai Zheng, sixty days after recovery, was able to walk, shoot arrows, and hunt, but died due to excessive sexual activity. Engaging in sexual activity during the heat stage of a febrile disease or immediately after recovery results in a condition called "Yin Yang Yi" (Exchange of Yin and Yang), which is difficult to treat and often fatal.
Recently, a scholar contracted mild Shang Han (Cold Damage). More than ten days after recovery, he could ride a horse and travel, believing himself fully recovered. However, due to sexual activity, he suffered acute lower abdominal pain and spasms of the hands and feet, leading to death.
Generally, within five days of recovering from an epidemic disease, consuming noodles or meat causes relapse. Rising early after recovery and drinking alcohol or eating leeks also triggers relapse. Consuming raw fish shortly after recovery inevitably leads to persistent dysentery. Eating raw vegetables after recovery causes permanent discoloration of the complexion. Drinking cold water after sweating resolves the exterior damages the Pericardium (Xin Bao), causing chronic deficiency. Eating raw dates and mutton after recovery causes steaming heat in the upper jiao (chest/diaphragm). Eating dog or mutton causes steaming heat in the bones. Eating fish/meat with melons or raw vegetables causes body heat or swelling. Eating garlic paste and raw fish leads to severe debility upon relapse.
